Review: House of Women

One of the best movies I saw last year was The Beguiled, a remake of a Clint Eastwood movie, that subverted expectations at every turn. I remember watching the original movie, all those years ago, and thinking, how is this situation, supposed to be romantic, as Clint Eastwood’s character was a predator. Sofia Coppola, ad a similar thought, and reversed the perspective on the characters. The new movie, which is not only different but an actual thriller.

In this movie, Colin Farrell, plays Clint Eastwood’s character of Corporal McBurney, a charismatic Union soldier who seeks shelter, in an all-girls school. He goes about, trying to seduce each woman, but ends up suffering for his attempts. The movie, was not only better than the original film, but was timely and brought up themes that movies and books about the era had to brought up before. Those same themes of gender and power are explored in Sophie Goldstein’s House of Women.

We first meet, Sarai, Rhivka, Aphra and Kizzy, all emissaries, from the Empire, who has embarked on a mission to “civilize “an unknown planet, called Mopu. As they go about colonizing, increasingly they find, they are not who they expected, and they are not welcome, as the shadow of the last mission looms large over them and what happened those crew members. Soon, the mysterious humanoid stranger, Jael Dean, and the ecosystem that is the life blood of the planet, both overwhelm the women. By book’s end, the mission encounters some casualties but for those who survived, they not look at life the same way again.

Overall, a powerhouse graphic novel that I wished I knew about sooner as it is will not leave you soon after you read it. The story by Sophie Goldstein successfully combines science fiction, thriller, and horror, into a richly woven tapestry. The art by Goldstein is elegant, off putting, and vibrant. Altogether, a science fiction tale that draws you in with an interesting but familiar premise and then subverts all your expectations in the most glorious way.

SPX 2016 Announces Special Guest Sophie Goldstein and International Guests Roger Langridge and Steffen Kverneland

spx-logo-240Small Press Expo has announced Sophie Goldstein, Roger Langridge and Steffen Kverneland as Special Guests at SPX 2016.

This is in addition to previously announced special guests Daniel Clowes, Lisa Hanawalt, Jeffrey Brown, Trina Robbins, Charles Burns, Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez, Sarah Glidden Carol Tyler, Jim Woodring, Drew Friedman, Ed Piskor, and a rare festival appearance by Joe Sacco.

International special guests include Tom Gauld, Aimée de Jongh, Pascal Girard and Cyril Pedrosa.

Sophie Goldstein is a 2013 graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies.  She won the Ignatz Award last year for her graphic novel, The Oven published by Adhouse Books and previously won the Ignatz in 2014 for her mini-comic, House of Women, Part I. Her first book, Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell, co-written with Jenn Jordan, was self-published in 2013 with funding from Kickstarter. Sophie has also illustrated a children’s book, Poopy Claws, written by Gene Ambaum. Her work has appeared in various publications including Best American Comics 2013, Fable Comics, The Pitchfork Review, Maple Key Comics, Sleep of Reason, Symbolia, Trip 8 and Irene 3. She currently lives in Pittsburgh, PA.

Roger Langridge is a New Zealand-born cartoonist currently resident in the UK. He is probably best known for his work on the Harvey Award-winning Muppet Show Comic Book and Thor the Mighty Avenger and for his own Eisner-winning series, Snarked! He has also worked on The Rocketeer, Popeye, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Doctor Who and Mandrake the Magician, as well as more alternative efforts like Zoot!, Art d’Ecco and Knuckles the Malevolent Nun (published by Fantagraphics) and his self-published title Fred the Clown. His most recent works are The Baker Street Peculiars (with Andy Hirsch) and Abigail and the Snowman (published by Boom! Studios), and a Fred the Clown graphic novel, The Iron Duchess, originally serialized on the ZCO.MX website.

Steffen Kverneland is a Norwegian comics artist. With the cartoonist Lars Fiske, he has created graphic biographies of Olaf Gulbransson and Kurt Schwitters, as well as Kanon, a series of comics about 19th century art. His award-winning graphic biography of Edvard Munch, published in English by SelfMadeHero, won the prestigious Brage Prize for Literature. Munch has been translated into several other languages. Original art from the book resides in Norway’s National Gallery of Art.

SPX 2016 takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 17-18, and will have over 650 creators, 280 exhibitor tables and 22 programming slots to entertain, enlighten and introduce attendees to the amazing world of independent and small press comics.

Small Press Expo Announces the 2015 Ignatz Award Nominees

2015 Ignatz AwardThe Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, has announced the 2015 nominees for the annual presentation of the Ignatz Awards, a celebration of outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning.

The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse from his long running comic strip Krazy Kat, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz Awards are a festival prize, the first of such in the United States comic book industry.

The nominees for the ballot were determined by a panel of five of the best of today’s comic artists, Lamar Abrams, Cara Bean, Robyn Chapman, Sophie Goldstein and Corrine Mucha, with the votes cast for the awards by the attendees during SPX. The Ignatz Awards will be presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 9:30 P.M.

ComiXology will be sponsoring this year’s Ignatz Awards.
