Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Action Comics #992 (DC Comics) – With “The Oz Effect” over, we’re intrigued to see where this series goes as that story attacked the very hope Superman is built on.

The Apocalypse Girl #1 (Amigo Comics) – Metis is 16, has all these problems and more. Because, on top of that, the End of the World happened and she has to cope with bloodthirsty demons and a 4,000-years old, critical, undead mom! This just sounds awesome.

Betty and Veronica: Vixens #1 (Archie Comics) – We’ve read it, it’s awesome. Check out our early review.

The Demon: Hell is Earth #1 (DC Comics) – Out! Out! Our favorite Demon is back in a new limited series. The first issue is intriguing and should be fun for long time fans of the character.

Detective Comics #969 (DC Comics) – Kicking off “Fall of the Batmen.” That title alone has us taking notice.

Doomsday Clock #1 (DC Comics) – We’ve already posted multiple reviews, but this is THE comic of the week. After lots of build up the world of Watchmen and DC collide.

Doppleganger #1 (Alterna Comics) – Dennis’ grip on reality fully unravels when an evil version of himself begins to torment him. Alterna has been doing an awesome job with their newsprint line of comics and this is a brand new one to check out. Just $1.50 people!

Eleanor & the Egret #5 (AfterShock) – Amazing art and beyond adorable story. If you’re not reading this series, you’re missing out.

Gregory Suicide (Dark Horse) – A graphic novel taking on clones and a story that spirals in paranoia. A solid read with some really cool art.

Imaginary Fiends #1 (DC Comics/Vertigo) – Imaginary friends that also want you to kill. The procedural meets… well, we’re not quite sure. First issue is a great set up in what will be an interesting twist on the police genre.

Long Lost #1 (Scout Comics) – Stranger Things meets Ghost World in Long Lost, the haunting story of two estranged sisters who find themselves drawn back to their small southern hometown to unlock the disturbing mysteries that are hidden there, with all roads leading back to their enigmatic, secretive mother

Motor Girl #10 (Abstract Studios) – The final issue of the series. We’re sad already.

Rugrats #2 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – We loved the cartoon. We loved the first issue. We’re getting our Rugrats fix, how about you? A comic that’s great for kids and their parents looking for nostalgia.

Sherlock Frankenstein & the Legion of Evil #2 (Dark Horse) – The world of Black Hammer continues to expand in this series. Jeff Lemire people!!!

Silver Sable and the Wild Pack #36 (Marvel) – 90s nostalgia, nuff said.

Star Wars #39 (Marvel) – If you’re not reading Marvel’s Star Wars comics you’re missing out on great action and a fantastic extension of the world. If you’re a fan of the movies and not reading these, you’re really missing out.

Transformers: Optimus Prime #13 (IDW Publishing) – Post “First Strike” Optimus heads into the Cybertronian wilderness to search for the first new life in four million years. These types of stories tend to really stand out.

Void Trip #1 (Image Comics) – The story of Ana and Gabe, the last two humans left alive in the galaxy. They’re low on fuel, they’re low on food, and they’re low on psychedelic space froot, but they’re still determined to make it to the promised land: hippy-paradise, super-planet Euphoria.

WWE #11 (BOOM! Studios) – If you’re a fan of wrestling, these comics are a must.

X-O Manowar #9 (Valiant Entertainment) – One of the best series out there today.

This week, Dark Horse Comics expands the universe of Black Hammer with Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil, written by Lemire and illustrated by artist David Rubín. The four issue mini-series reveals the secret origins of the Black Hammer’s greatest villains.

Top Pick: The Mighty Thor #700 (Marvel) – I am optimistic with most things that Jason Aaron touches. He has been killing it on this title, and while some are still arguing if Thor should be a female or not, I have been loving this run. Does Jane die? How does Odinson fit into this? We are into Marvel Legacy territory now, so does that mean he returns as Thor? Or is that too easy? Either way, I can’t wait to find out.

Batman #33 (DC Comics) – Tom King is just getting done with “The Proposal” and “The War of Jokes and Riddles”, and is now joined by Joelle Jones on art to start a new arc. I cannot wait to see what Jones comes up with on art, as I love her style. I also cannot wait to see where King takes us next with the Dark Knight.

Invincible Iron Man #593 (Marvel) – Bendis catches a lot of flack, and sometimes it may be warranted, but I have actually enjoyed what he has been crafting with Riri and Doom. I am pleasantly surprised that this has become one of my most anticipated titles and plots.

Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil #1 (Dark Horse) – It’s more of the Black Hammer universe, and Lemire, oh and Rubin. These are two of my favorite creators in the medium, and I can already imagine how their styles will go together, and it excites me.

Kill or Be Killed #13 (Image Comics) – I always look forward to this incredible book. Brubaker is crafting another classic, and I cannot wait to see the ending, but I also never want it to end. That is the dilemma of awesome writing.

Top Pick: Batman: The Drowned #1 (DC Comics) – DC has been knocking it out of the park with Dark Nights: Metal and these one-shots have been introducing us to these nightmarish Batmen. This one is Batman mashed up with Aquaman and the comic itself is one of the best produced yet.

Infernoct #1 (Scout Comics) – A new series from Scout Comics is always worth grabbing and this new one should be on everyone’s buy list. This horror series is one that every fan of H.P. Lovecrraft and horror should check out and it’s perfect for this Halloween season.

Kid Lobotomy #1 (IDW Publishing/Black Crown) – I’m intrigued to see what this new imprint has. I’m expecting Vertigo and we’ll see if this can meet expectations. The series is described as Kafka meets King Lear by way of Young Frankenstein and that alone has me interest.

Normandy Gold #4 (Titan Comics) – I love me some noir and this is a brutal one in a period piece setting. Grim, grimy, gritty, and so good.

The Realm #2 (Image Comics) – This series’ first issue was fantastic, a fantasy Walking Dead and I expect it to find a following like that show. It has the potential to be the next big thing in comics.

Top Pick: Suicide Squad Rebirth Vol. 1 (DC Comics) – All of the awesome in one collected issue. The Squad doesn’t kneel before Zod and it’s amazing!

Top Pick: Black Panther Prelude #1 (Marvel) – The becoming of Black Panther is highlighted in part one of this two part story.

Batwoman #8 (DC Comics) – The “Fear and Loathing” arc continues and the 2nd installment ramps things up to 11.

Harley Quinn #30 (DC Comics) – Who doesn’t want to VOTE HARLEY!

Deadpool vs Old Man Logan #1 (Marvel) – Bring popcorn, it’s about to get real… bloody!

Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dean Ormston have captivated readers with their brilliant creator owned superhero saga Black Hammer. This fall, Dark Horse Comics will expand the universe of the Black Hammer with Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil, written by Lemire and illustrated by artist David Rubín, for the first of several high profile mini-series featuring different artists.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2017 I got a chance to talk to Lemire about his new spin-offs, being such a prolific writer, the difference between Marvel, DC, and Valiant, and Canada’s First Nations.

Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer Universe Expands This Fall

Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dean Ormston have captivated readers and critics alike with their brilliant creator owned superhero saga Black Hammer, which follows the forgotten champions of Spiral City long after the age of heroes has passed. This fall, Dark Horse Comics will expand the universe of the Black Hammer with Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil, written by Lemire and illustrated by artist David Rubín, for the first of several high profile mini-series featuring different artists. While the main, Eisner-nominated Black Hammer series focuses on the heroes of Spiral City—Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien—Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil reveals the secret origins of the Black Hammer’s greatest villains.

Lucy Weber, the daughter of the Black Hammer, is an investigative newspaper reporter, and her search for the truth about her father leads her to some very dark places. In Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil, Lucy heads to Spiral City’s infamous asylum to confront the world’s greatest super villains and the secrets they have locked away.

Lemire doesn’t want to deluge fans with needless spin offs or tie-ins that they have to read to get the whole story. These new mini-series will stand alone and tell complete, self-contained stories.

Dark Horse Comics will publish the debut issue of the four issue Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil mini-series on October 18, featuring a main cover by Rubín and a variant cover by legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
