Review: Schmuck

SchmuckKickstarter can be hit and miss for lovers of all things comics, and the margin of quality products are even smaller. There have been successes like Mae and Smut Peddlers which have exceeded expectations and have their audiences clamoring for more content. Then there are those, who I rather not mention, whose end products, fails in its execution and can, to the backer, feel like a bad date. As a Kickstarter backer, you are truly a “stakeholder” in the comic, so in a minimal way, you are definitely a publisher, so quality becomes paramount, especially when you believe in the project in the first place.

Then there are those situations, where personal circumstances control the destiny of the project, sometimes before it ends, but mostly from my experience, long after it ends. Some of the Kickstarter creators, tend to just to stop the project altogether, and refund the backers. Some of the creators, become overwhelmed, and stop the projects, after realizing so, and then there are others who become overextended, and never fulfill or return the funds, and this is where the backers feel cheated. Seth Kushner’s Schmuck was a project that could have gone any of the ways mentioned above, as Kusnher passed away earlier this year after a year of battling Leukemia, but to the quality of his character and his family, they posthumously published this seminal work and I can honestly say as a backer, it is worth every penny.

Kushner’s Shmuck is a godsend in many ways and I wish I had found out about the web comic prior to reading the collected graphic novel, as has got to be the best Meta comic I have ever read about living in NYC. His writing paired the twenty two artists involved in this comic, makes for some side-splitting adventures throughout the city. Some of my favorite stories include “A Hairy Situation”, where he takes a date to watch American Splendor, which for those who have read and watched it, will tell you is super meta. My favorite story out of the whole collection is, “The Ex Factor”, where he tells in comical fashion, his running into an ex-girlfriend.

Overall, a solid collection of stories, and for those who don’t know, all of them are autobiographical, and everyone is worth a read. The writing by Seth Kushner, is so strong, one could only wonder, how he would have followed up this book. The art by the different artists is nice compliment to his writing, as they serve as a nice contrast to the different narratives. In conclusion, one could only wish to create an opus this good, in their lifetime.

Join Cully, Dean, Klaus, and Seth at Baltimore Comic-Con 2015!

DELINQ_004_VARIANT_HAMNERThe Baltimore Comic-Con returns to Baltimore‘s beautiful Inner Harbor on September 2527, 2015 for our 16th annual show! Come to the Baltimore Convention Center this fall to meet returning guests Cully Hamner, Dean Haspiel, Klaus Janson, and Seth Kushner.

One of the founding members of Gaijin Studios, Cully Hamner has worked for every major publisher in the comics industry (and many minor ones) since his debut at DC Comics in 1992, where he provided art duties on Green Lantern: Mosaic. He later went on to make a name for himself working on DC’s Blue Beetle and Black Lightning: Year One, and his comic, Red was adapted as a major motion picture. Recently, you can find his art on Valiant’s The Delinquents variant covers and DC’s Convergence: The Question, as well as a Superman: Man of Steel statue design!

Fox#1Emmy Award winner and Harvey and Eisner Award nominee Dean Haspiel is a man of many talents. In addition to major comics accomplishments like his seminal  Billy Dogma and collaborations with alt-comix legend Harvey Pekar, “Dino” has provided art for HBO’s “Bored to Death”, co-founded HANG DAI Editions, and was a playwright (“Switch to Kill”). He has provided art for titles such as Marvel Comics’ Fantastic FourAmazing Spider-ManX-Men: First Class, IDW’s Godzilla Legends, and Locust Moon Press’ Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream. You can find him these days providing art on DC Comics’ Batman ’66, covers on Action Lab Entertainment’s The Stray, and plots and art on Archie Comics’ The Fox.

Futures End #1Klaus Janson‘s storied career begins back in the 1970s, when he got his first professional comics credit on Marvel’s Jungle Action, and he’s built a long line of comics work ever since, with noteworthy penciling or inking runs on titles such as Marvel’s Defenders and Daredevil, and DC’s Detective Comics and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. His artistic skills see him regularly as a penciller, inker, and colorist, and he regularly teaches courses, both publicly at venues such as the School of Visual Arts, and privately at comics publishing events and conventions. You can find examples of his recent work on DC Comics’ Superman and Convergence: Batman and Robin, and Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man.

schmuckAnd last but certainly not least, we are especially pleased to welcome back to the Baltimore Comic-Con comix creator and photographer Seth Kushner! For those of you unaware, Seth was unable to attend our 2014 show during his battle with leukemia, and we’re happy to report he has recovered and will be joining us this year. Seth’s entry into the world of comics came as a result of his friendship with Dean Haspiel, of whom he was taking pictures for a book on interesting people in Brooklyn. As Dean introduced Seth to more people in comics, he became the defacto photographer for many creators, and this work led to the publication of Leaping Tall Buildings, which profiled the comics medium using Seth’s pictures of industry players. Since then, Seth went on to become one of the contributors to Trip City, an online repository of online art, and its successor, Act-i-Vate, a webcomics collective. Seth’s Schmuck Comix and Secret Sauce Comix are being reissued by Hang Dai Editions through Alternative Comics this year.

This year’s confirmed guests for the show include: Jeremy Bastian (Cursed Pirate Girl); Mark Buckingham (Fables); Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman); Frank Cho (Jungle Girl); Steve Conley (Bloop); Amanda Conner (Harley Quinn); Katie Cook (Gronk); Darwyn Cooke (Richard Stark’s Parker); John Gallagher (Buzzboy); Cully Hamner (Convergence: The Question); Dean Haspiel (The Fox); Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets); Klaus Janson (Superman); JG Jones (Strange Fruit); Denis Kitchen (The Best of Comix Book: When Marvel Went Underground); Barry Kitson (Empire: Uprising); Seth Kushner (Schmuck); Mark Mariano (The Other Side of Hugless Hill); Ron Marz (Convergence: Batman and Robin); Terry Moore (Rachel Rising); Tom Palmer (The Avengers); Jimmy Palmiotti (The Con Job); David Peterson (Mouse Guard); Ron Randall (Convergence: Catwoman); Budd Root (Cavewoman); Don Rosa (Donald Duck); Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo); Bart Sears (Bloodshot); Louise Simonson (Convergence: Superman – The Man of Steel); Walter Simonson (Convergence: Superman – The Man of Steel); Andy Smith (Earth 2); Charles Soule (Uncanny Inhumans); Ben Templesmith (Gotham by Midnight); Frank Tieri (Suicide Squad); John Totleben (Swamp Thing); Rick Veitch (Saga of the Swamp Thing); Mark Waid (Daredevil); and Thom Zahler (My Little Pony: Friends Forever).

DELETE BLOOD CANCER FACTS
Delete Blood Cancer DKMS was founded in the U.S. in 2004 and is the U.S. arm of DKMS, the German bone marrow donor center. DKMS was started by a family whose search for a donor inspired 68,000 people to register in just one year. Today, Delete Blood Cancer and DKMS make up the world’s largest bone marrow donor center with branches around the globe that have registered more than 4 million donors and provided more than 40,000 patients with potentially life-saving transplants.

In the U.S., Delete Blood Cancer has registered more than 500,000 potential donors and facilitated over 1,500 life-saving transplants. We have registered more than 100,000 new donors per year in the past two years. But they’re not stopping there. They lead the fight against blood cancer by working with families, communities, and organizations to recruit more donors and provide more patients with second chances at life.

Delete Blood Cancer is dedicated to their mission of building a critical mass of bone marrow and blood stem cell donors for patients in need. By educating about the donation process, demonstrating the impact of donation, and providing support and counsel to their patients and donors, they serve to grow their donor center and, ultimately, help more people.

The donors they register are added to the Be The Match® Registry, the official registry of the United States operated by the National Marrow Donor Program®. This registry currently includes more than 11 million donors, of which more than 38 percent have been recruited by Delete Blood Cancer and DKMS combined.

Register online at deletebloodcancer.org, text DELETE to 20222 to donate $5, contribute at deletebloodcancer.org, or fund raise via firstgiving.com/dkms.

Delete Blood Cancer will be exhibiting at the Baltimore Comic-Con in booth #2503. Please stop by to learn how you can help!

Baltimore Comic Con 2014: The Annual Yearbook Returns in 2014 with Matt Wagner’s Grendel!

2014 grendel yearbook 1The Baltimore Comic-Con’s Yearbook returns in 2014, celebrating the creators appearing at the show taking place Friday, September 5th through Sunday, September 7th, 2014. This book of art features interpretations of characters from Matt Wagner’s Grendel, sometimes in conjunction with their own creations, in a celebration of creator-owned properties. Beautifully designed by returning guest and Love and Capes creator Thom Zahler, the book comes in a standard and, for VIP ticketholders, a limited VIP cover edition.

Once again, the popular scavenger hunt returns in 2014! When you buy the book, you’ll get a list of the 48 Yearbook contributors and their table numbers. If you succeed in your hunt, you can get your choice of bonus prints!

Grendel first appeared as Matt Wagner’s contribution to issue #2 of the 1982 comics anthology Comico Primer. Moving onto a solo black-and-white series with Comico in 1993, the initial run lasted 3 issues before cancellation due to the publisher’s financial problems. Wagner then relaunched the character in back-up stories in his Comico title, Mage, before a new standalone title launched by the same publisher in 1986, which transitioned publishers to Dark Horse Comics in 1990. Grendel as a character has existed in different times as different people — Hunter Rose, Christine Spar, Brian Li Sung, Eppy Thatcher, Orion Assante, and more. The character has gone on to cross over with DC Comics’ Batman and, most recently, with Dynamite Entertainment’s Grendel vs. The Shadow.

The art created for the 2014 Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook celebrating over 30 years of Matt Wagner’s Grendel will be auctioned off at the Baltimore Comic-Con Art Auction on Friday, September 5th at 5pm! A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to Seth Kushner and his fight against leukemia. Seth is a frequent guest of the Baltimore Comic-Con and everyone is looking forward to his return to the show in 2015! To learn more about Seth and to contribute to his cause, please go to http://www.gofundme.com/d8gc2o.

Don’t miss this opportunity to own original art featuring Matt’s characters as depicted by artists including Alan Davis, Allison Sohn, Andy Runton, Andy Smith with colors by Andrew Dalhouse, Bernard Chang, Billy Martin, Billy Tucci, Budd Root, Chris Kemple, Craig Rousseau with colors by Nate Lovett, Dan Parent, Daniel Govar, Dave Bullock, David Finch, David Mack, Dean Haspiel, Francesco Francavilla, Fred Hembeck, Jeff Shultz, Jeremy Dale, Joe Prado, Joe Staton with colors by Matt Webb, John Gallagher, John K. Snyder III, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Kelly Yates, Ken Hunt, Lora Innes, Mark Dos Santos And Autumn Fredrickson, Mark Mariano, Mark Wheatley, Marty Baumann, Matt Slay, Michael Golden, Mike Vosburg, Nate Lovett, Ray Fawkes, Rich Woodall with colors by Nate Lovett, Richard Case, Richard Clark, Rick Veitch, Ron Randall, Seth Kushner, Steve Conley, Thom Zahler, Tom Palmer, Tom Raney, and Tradd Moore!

The book will be sold, and the art auction will be held at 5pm on Friday, September 5th in the Main hall, in the Exclusives Booth in the lobby. The book will be available at the Baltimore Comic-Con for $20.

Save Our Schmuck: Benefit and Campaign to Help Seth Kushner Announced

kushner 2Comic book creator and acclaimed photographer Seth Kushner has been riding a pretty horrifying roller coaster over these last few months.

First there was the high of a successful Kickstarter campaign for his Schmuck graphic novel, that was followed, just four days later, by a Leukemia diagnosis that has put him into the hospital and away for his son for long periods of time.

I spoke to Kushner back in mid-June for Den of Geek US just after he had gotten home and he had a good head about this hell that he and his loved ones had been dragged through. He was thinking about work, thankful for the support of the comic book community, delighted to be home and looking forward to a bone marrow transplant. A couple of months later and Kushner is, unfortunately, still waiting and back in the hospital. According to a recent update on his Facebook page, though, Kushner said he feels like he’s “turning a corner” after a rough patch.

Despite that good bit of news, though, the realities are that being sick comes with a hefty financial burden, and so the comic book community is again rallying around Kushner with a benefit at Union Hall in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday August 26th.

Here are some pertinent details. For more, check out the event page on Facebook.

Save Our Schmuck: Bone Marrow Benefit for Seth Kushner

Featuring: Live comix reading, music and comedy featuring: Molly Crabapple, Douglas Rushkoff, Dean Haspiel, Akim Funk Buddha, JahFurry, Josh Neufeld, Sticks and Stones and others.

If you’re unable to attend the event, please do hop over to the GoFundMe page that has been set up to collect donations to assist Seth and his family as they fight through this together. As the description on that page says, there are medical expenses that aren’t covered by insurance and in that Seth is a freelancer, his inability to take on jobs means that the family is missing his income right now. Give what you can and, almost as importantly, share this article/or that page so that others can rally and support this worthy effort.

Baltimore Comic Con 2012 – Highlights of the Show

Comic book conventions have become more fun and entertaining as I’ve gotten to know more creators. It was great to see talented folks like Josh Fialkov, Ron Marz, the BOOM! Studios crew, folks from comiXology, the FUBAR guys and many more people I’ve gotten to know. But, conventions aren’t just about seeing old friends, it’s about finding new talent to help promote. So without delay, here’s the comic book highlights of Baltimore Comic Con 2012!

Creator: Monica Gallagher

Comic: Boobage, Bonnie N. Collide: Nine to Five – Even Rollergirls Have Day Jobs, When I Was A Mall Model

You want an example of a female creator that should be on a high profile comic book right now? Look no further than Monica Gallagher. First, her art caught my eye, then I flipped through a few of the books, every page I read got me to laugh and put a smile on my face. Having read all six comics I bought, I can say, she deserves a bigger audience. How much did I like the art? I bought the cover to one of her books and making sure I purchase the books I didn’t pick up at the convention. I’m not the only one who enjoyed Gallagher’s talent, another who read all the comics purchased was hooked too. Do yourself a favor and check out her stuff right now!

Creator: Seth Kushner, Pierce Hargan and Ryan Alexander-Tanner

Comic: Schmuck: Bush, Boobs & Brooklyn Edition

For as much as Gallagher’s book celebrated women, this comic by three men, was a brutal take from the other side. Two stories make up this anthology series and both were brutal and honest. The art and story varied in both, but for $3, it was well worth the purchase.

Creator: Yehudi Mercado

Comic: Buffalo Speedway Vol. 1 – 3

Figgs is a lifer. He’s 23 years old, he’s been delivering for Houston’s Turbo Pizza for eight grueling years, he lives with his dead-beat best friend, Super Cheese, and he’s got a supreme crush on his Friday regular, a rich girl named Pia. Life sucks, but it’s about to get suckier. The day is June 17th 1994. Today the Rockets will battle the Knicks in the NBA Finals, America will host the World Cup and OJ Simpson will lead the LAPD on a slow speed chase…. That description sold me!

Creator: Christopher Ryder – writer, Marc Dandroni – art

Comic: Dames in the Atomic Age

I first saw this book at Tr!ckster this year in San Diego, but my laziness and incompetence made me unable to pick it up. I lucked out and was able to get the graphic novel in Baltimore. The story is a pulp/noir tale involving dames and lightning shooting revolvers. The art looks solid, and I’m just a sucker for this type of comic. I’m beyond looking forward to reading this. I also grabbed  All Crime Comics from the same publisher, Art of Fiction. It also didn’t hurt Chris was super nice and shares my fandom of Janet Lee’s work.

Creator: Chris Lewis – writer, Bruno Oliveira

Comic: Drones

Lewis pitched the comic as “the war on terror meeting a Las Vegas stage show…. with a goat.” I read the first two issues and can’t wait to read the next three when they’re released.

Creator: Too Many to Name

Comic: Game Over: Insert More Quarters

A Kickstarter anthology that I missed, the simple cover caught my eye and after flipping through the interior, the art looked solid. The graphic novel is a collection of short stories by artists from a wide range of disciplines who all share a love for comics. From Illustrators, Animators, Graphic Design and Comics, we are a group of 16 artist who have came together to create a high quality graphic novel. The result is a 148 page, gorgeous collection of 16 stories in Black & White, 6″ by 9″ graphic novel.

Creator: Justin Peterson

Comic: Very Near Mint

It’s a comic book, about a comic book shop. I didn’t pick up the two volumes, instead I’m waiting for the third volume to hit Kickstarter, then I’ll get all of them at the same time.
