RCCC 2025: Magnetic Press Celebrates at Books With Pictures

Magnetic Press is celebrating over a decade of publishing—and the party continues in Portland. As part of Rose City Comic Con weekend, the Eisner Award–winning publisher will host a special event at Books With Pictures!

The evening is free and open to the public, with food and beverages provided. Fans can discover a showcase of Magnetic’s most acclaimed catalog, including:

  • Frontier: A multiple award-nominee, Guillaume Singelin’s sweeping vision of mankind’s future in space is a stunning mix of The Expanse-style hard sci-fi populated by chibi-style characters.

  • Carbon & Silicon: From multi-award-nominee comic phenom Mathieu Bablet, this philosophical near-future odyssey follows the world’s first artificial life forms as they witness 300 years of mankind’s ultimate downfall.

  • Lost Letters: By celebrated comic book wonderkind Jim Bishop, this multiple award-winner mixes the whimsy of a Miyazaki fantasy with the drama of a boy in search of his missing mother in a bizarre world of talking fish.

  • My Dear Pierrot: Also by Jim Bishop, this dramatic fantasy follows a young girl betrothed to a boring Prince, but bewitched by a charismatic wizard who may or may not be using her for his own purposes.

  • Midnight Order: A globe-spanning anthology written by award-winner Mathieu Bablet, this collection of tales centers around a secret society of witches dedicated to protecting mankind from hidden horrors. Blending occult intrigue and cutting-edge artistry, this collection presents haunting voices from around the world.

  • Tezucomi Vol. 1 & Vol. 2: A bold anthology celebrating the works of the revered mangaka Osamu Tezuka, this two-volume set features creators from across the globe reinterpreting the “God of Manga’s” classic characters and stories in striking modern form.

In addition to these in-store highlights, Magnetic is also celebrating its ongoing partnership with Label 619.

The event’s setting at Books With Pictures underscores the shared values of both organizations. The Portland comic shop is nationally recognized for its mission of inclusivity and representation. Built from the ground up to prioritize diverse voices, the store aims to be the place where every reader can see themselves in a story.

RCCC 2019: Legendary Comics Announces New Original Graphic Novel The Heart Hunter

The Heart Hunter

Legendary Comics has announced new graphic novel The Heart Hunter, exploring immortality, love, and greed, from novelist McKelle George and artist V. Gagnon. Set for release in late 2020, The Heart Hunter is set on the cursed island of Envecor where everyone is doomed to wear their heart outside their bodies and are immortal—unable to die, to change, to have children—until they find their soul mate. Once paired, the soul mates turn mortal, are free from the curse, and are able to leave the island. But all fairy tales have a dark side. Those who don’t want to lose their immortality employ “Heart Hunters” to seek out their predestined soul mates and kill them, ensuring everlasting life. Psyche, a Heart Hunter, is hired by the king to kill his soul mate. As she sets out on her quest, she embarks on her own journey of mending her broken heart and learning to trust again.

Fans attending Rose City Comic Con are invited to join the Legendary Comics team and The Heart Hunter creators McKelle George and V. Gagnon as they share secrets about upcoming comic releases at the “Legendary Comics 2019 and Beyond” panel on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 4:00pm – 5:00pm in Room 6. Attendees will also get updates on previously announced YA releases: Championess and Lupina; get sneak peeks for Lost in Space: Countdown to Danger, Acursian, and Firebrand; and will receive an exclusive Legendary Comics giveaway.

Big Easy Con Switches Dates to November Leaving Vendors and Attendees Holding the Bill

Big Easy Con

It looks like those who were planning on attending the Big Easy Con aren’t having that much of an easy time. The first time convention being put on by LeftField Media has stumbled out of the gate already switching dates.

The convention was to take place June 1 and 2 and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans but nine days after we received our initial press announcement about the show, the convention has moved to November leaving exhibitors and attendees with a lot of questions.

Angry individuals took to the convention’s Facebook announcement voicing their displeasure and asking some pretty important questions.

Creators who attended Awesome Con, also a Leftfield show, were offered free shipping from that convention to Big Easy Con. With the convention now taking place over three days November 1-3, those creators are left trying to figure out how to get their product and other supplies back as some have shows between the original June dates and November. There’s also those who have had product shipped directly from the printer to the show as well who are left with questions and scrambling what to do.

Attendees as well are left holding the bill, along with some creators, as flights and hotels have been book with the show less than a month away. Some of that is non-refundable.

When questioned over what vendors can do, the convention responded:

…all vendors received an email today with their options listed. Getting a full refund on their booth is definitely one of those options. Hotel rooms in the Big Easy Con room block are also 100% refundable.

Vendors flights though are still a question and while some may be able to get credit for use later, others have non-refundable tickets, or will be forced to spend more changing flight plans.

In the announcement of the date change, the reason given was that the convention want to create a more “enjoyable and valuable experience” for the community and have expanded the convention to three days and more space within the convention center. They’ve also said fans weren’t “enthusiastic about the June dates.” Fans asked on Facebook about that with no response.

Big Easy Con has said they are upgrading two day tickets to three day, single day ticket holders can upgrade, and those who want a refund for their tickets can request one.

It’s unknown which guests will return in November though the convention announced Zachary Levi’s attendance around the same time as the date change.

For a first year convention, many are pointing out this isn’t a good first impression and obviously not a good look for a veteran company like Leftfield who also runs Anime NYC, Rose City Comic Con, and Awesome Con.

Dark Horse and Ninkasi Brewing Team Up for Legends of Ninkasi: Rise of Craft

Beer and comics fans rejoice! Dark Horse Comics and Ninkasi Brewing Company are “hoppy” to announce a new partnership. These two innovative and creative Pacific Northwest companies are combining their passions to create a story that speaks to the origins of Ninkasi in Legends of Ninkasi: Rise of Craft.

Written by Jim Gibbons with art by Eduardo FranciscoLegend of Ninkasi: Rise of Craftwill be available for purchase at NinkasiCon next spring along with a beer featured in the comic. In Legend of Ninkasi: Rise of Craft, the citizens of the medieval kingdom of Eugenia subsist in a listless stupor because the evil King Blüdweisen is holding them hostage. He’s outlawed craft beer and serves only his terrible-tasting, mass-produced brew. Sensing some corruption of the spirit of beer, Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of fermentation, and her faithful companion Tricerahops travel through time and space to investigate these dark portents. There they meet two brewers who they inspire to rebellion—a rebellion against horrible beer . . . and zombie vikings!

Join Ninkasi Brewing Company founders Jamie Floyd and Nikos Ridge, and Legend of Ninkasi: Rise of Craft writer Jim Gibbons at Rose City Comic Con for a signing in the Dark Horse booth (#711) today at 6:00 PM!

Starburns Industries Press Tag Teams With Invasion From Planet Wrestletopia. Get the First Two Issues at Rose City Comic Con

Starburns Industries Press, the new publishing division of the studio behind Rick and Morty, has partnered with the creators of Invasion From Planet Wrestletopia for Rose City Comic Con. SBI Press will publish the no-holds-barred, action-comedy sci-fi series from writers Matt Entin and Ed Kuehnel, artist Dan Schkade, colorist Marissa Louise and letterer Dave Lanphear.

Inspired by the colorful days of 1980s pro-wrestling, the six-issue mini-series kicks off when disgruntled professional wrestler “Rock ‘n Roll” Rory Landell declares himself “galactic champion of the universe”, which a hostile planet of wrestling aliens takes as a declaration of war from Planet Earth.

Fans at this year’s Rose City Comic-Con can grab issues 1 & 2 of Invasion from Planet Wrestletopia thanks to a small print run available at the Starburns Industries booth (#649). Writers Kuehnel and Entin will be signing copies throughout the con while artist Dan Schkade will be at the booth Saturday from 1-3. Stop by booth #649 for this and more books and swag from Starburns Industries this weekend!
