The Mess is an intriguing graphic novel about reconnecting with those we love

Posted on by Leave a comment

When her semi-estranged and penniless hoarder father dies, Erin Messina is tasked with cleaning out his house before the bank forecloses on it. This otherwise thankless task is given a purpose, however, when she remembers the original Picasso drawing her father was gifted in 1964. She enlists her teenage son, Jackson, to spend spring break looking for their possible ticket to long-term financial stability. Jackson, resentful and eager to shirk responsibility, befriends twin skateboarders who live in the hood, and tell him about the violent murder that happened directly across the street from his grandfather’s home — and the murderer who still lives there. Emotional baggage, paranoia, and frayed nerves stretch the Messina’s relationship to the brink, as The Mess careens to a thrilling final act that includes… two-way radio communication with the dead?

Wolf’s Belly is absolutely fantastic with a great story and art. A stand out of the year!

You may think you know the story.

Little Red Riding Hood is swallowed by a wolf, and later rescued by a kindly Woodcutter.

But that’s not what really happened.

For starters, her name was Lu. The daughter of two brave adventurers, she wasn’t headed to Grandmother’s house. She was looking for glory.

She was hunting the Wolf.

Swallowed by the beast, Lu finds herself trapped in Wolf’s Belly, a magical dimension holding all the things the wolf has eaten. To escape, she must win over and unite the other fairytale survivors, including a stubborn Knight and the fourth Little Pig.

Adventure awaits, and danger! Can Lu unlock the secrets of this strange realm before the Wolf devours her village?

A Fishboy Named… Sashimi gets the spotlight and reviewed by our youngest reviewer!

In the town of Barnacle Bay, a creature lurks. He’s come from the ocean, in search of others like him.

To fit in with humans, Sashimi sneaks into an elementary school and pretends to be a student. But he’s clearly a fish out of water!

When Sashimi finds out the whole town is on the hunt for the Beast of Barnacle Bay―a creature who sounds a lot like Sashimi―hijinks ensue! Fortunately, with the help of a new friend and the class goldfish, Sashimi figures out a way to stay afloat.
