Dark Horse presents Stranger Things: The First Shadow

Dark Horse Books has announced Stranger Things: The First Shadow, an 80-page graphic novel adaptation of the award-winning play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, currently playing at the Phoenix Theatre in London and Marquis Theatre in New York City. Available for preorder now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and at your local bookstore, and wherever comic books are sold, the book will be available on January 19, 2027 for $19.99. Stranger Things: The First Shadow is from Rachel Pinnelas, Jake Bartok, Michael Atiyeh, and Tyler Smith.

In 1959 Hawkins, Indiana, the Creel family seeks a fresh start, especially their teenage son Henry, who is eager to escape his troubled past. Initially, things seem to go well — he finds friendship and joins the school play. But when a wave of shocking crimes strikes the town, Henry is forced to confront a terrifying possibility: Something inside him may be connected to the horrors unfolding around him. As this thrilling mystery races forward, shadows of the past are unleashed, relationships are tested, and the town of Hawkins must band together to face unspeakable darkness.

The critically acclaimed, multi-award-winning Stranger Things: The First Shadow opened to five-star reviews in 2023, and went on to receive Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment and Best Set Design, the Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Set Design and Most Promising Newcomer, and the WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Play. Since its debut at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, Stranger Things: The First Shadowhas been smashing box office records. The global phenomenonwas the most Tony Award-winning play of 2025, taking home 4 awards, including Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Sound Design of a Play, and a Special Tony Award for Illusions and Technical Effects.

This first-of-its-kind collaboration between theatre and television marked Netflix’s first foray into theatre, with the epic story and groundbreaking feats of technical design attracting many new theatre audiences. Nearly 1.6 million tickets have been sold across the West End and Broadway, with over 1,500 total performances. The Dark Horse graphic novel brings the stage to the page for all to enjoy.

Vault Announces Four New Hires and a Promotion

Vault has announced a promotion and four new hires.

Der-shing Helmer, previously Executive Editor at Vault, has been promoted to Vice President, Special Projects and Crowdfunding, to lead a newly created Special Projects and Crowdfunding Department. In her new role, Helmer will oversee a broad portfolio of special projects to be announced in the coming months. Helmer joined Vault in 2022 as Managing Editor, and has been instrumental in major successes like Post Malone’s BIG RIG, Dungeon Crawler Carl: Crocodile, and the recently launched AETHON: Vault line of novels.

Chris Byer joins Vault’s Special Projects and Crowdfunding Department as Crowdfunding Director.  Byer will oversee strategy, planning, and execution across Vault’s slate of crowdfunding projects. Byer is new to book publishing. He brings over fifteen years of experience in tabletop games, with a strong background in crowdfunding and creative project development. He has worked alongside creators and publishers to help bring ambitious, fan-driven projects to life. Byer will report to Der-shing Helmer.

Madison Bickford joins Vault’s Sales and Marketing Department as Sales Coordinator. Bickford will work with Vault’s Sales and Marketing team, creators, and external partners to organize, plan, and track sales and marketing efforts across the Vault catalog. Bickford is new to publishing. Previously she worked at the U.S. Naval Institute as the Prospect and Database Coordinator, and brings a wealth of experience in data and campaign management. Bickford will report to Vice President of Sales and Marketing, David Dissanayake.

Rachel Pinnelas joins Vault’s Editorial Department as Editor. Pinnelas is an experienced comics editor and writer with credits at Marvel and DC Comics, who began her professional career as a Marvel intern while studying architecture. In addition to her work in comics, Pinnelas helps curate public exhibitions, most recently contributing to the current comics-based shows at the Skirball Cultural Center. Pinnelas will report to Vault co-founder, Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief, Adrian Wassel.

AJ Shannon joins Vault’s Editorial Department as Assistant Editor. Recently an Editorial Intern at Marvel, Shannon previously worked in academic publishing at W. W. Norton & Company. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees in English and geology. Shannon will report to Adrian Wassel.

The next chapter of the scariest anthology around will hit comic book shops on October 22, 2025.

Announcing the 5th annual Mad Cave Studios Talent Search winners! With submissions open to creators all across the globe, there’s a massive amount of talent that sends submissions to the contest. By running this talent search, Mad Cave Studios‘ goal is to give aspiring creators the opportunity that many people can only dream of: having their work published!

This year marks the 5th anniversary of Mad Cave Studios’ highly-anticipated annual talent search. For the first time, they’ve expanded the talent search to include two colorists and two letterers, along with two writers and two illustrators.

AfterShock has expanded announcing three new hires for the comic publisher.

Rachel Pinnelas

Rachel Pin­nelas is the Social Community Manager for AfterShock Comics. A comic fan from a young age, she began her pro­fes­sion­al career in the indus­try as a Mar­vel intern while studying architecture, and has worked for both Mar­vel and DC Comics as an editor. She is passionate about lending her expertise, creativity, and fandom knowledge to excite audiences old and new about all things comics.

Charles Pritchett

Charles Pritchett is the Design Manager at AfterShock Comics, spearheading everything from the digital assembly of every title and logo production, to lettering and branding design. Brought up on the wrong side of the tracks in a bustling metropolis in Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, Charles enjoys a fine stew from time to time and hates to travel.

Katherine Jamison

Katherine Jamison is the Marketing Manager for AfterShock Comics. She holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and was a freelance writer and editor in a former life.
