Rodney Barnes and Jason Shawn Alexander’s Killadelphia has been setting its sights high since the very first issue. It established conflicting racial politics and creates a history that dates back to early independent America. A time when the Founding Fathers still roamed the land. One of them turns out to be a vampire looking to start a revolution of his own in present times. A vampire revolution. Killadelphia #4 is where that revolution starts, where we hear the first shot of the vampire uprising. It’s loud enough to become the new ‘shot heard around the world.’
Father and son James and Jim Sangster along with chief medical examiner Jose Padilla have stumbled across several big pieces of the larger puzzle, namely that President John Adams is patient zero of the vampire virus and that some of Philadelphia’s poorer neighborhoods have become his personal vampiric breeding grounds. Our merry group of novice vampire hunters is worried about the conquest-level amounts of bloodsuckers that are awaiting their orders, but they still don’t know when it’s all going to go down. This fourth issue is when everything starts.
Barnes’ script and Shawn Alexander’s art never waste an opportunity to comment on the fact that most of Adams’ vampire army is composed of black people. This is interesting because Adams is widely regarded as one of the few Founding Father to have not owned slaves. The actual facts behind this are somewhat muddy as the President did hire white and free black servants but also rented out slaves from slave owners, paying a service fee for their employment.
On top of that, Adams tolerated slavery and was very much a man of his time, meaning he might not hold up in a court of public opinion in today’s political climate (or perhaps he would’ve, given the state of things). This might say something about the drive behind his vampire revolution, especially in terms of how traditional or nuanced his perceived villainy will end up being.
It doesn’t seem like Barnes and Shawn Alexander are looking to frame Adams as a mere ‘white bad guy’ type of character for Killadelphia. The next two issues should reveal a lot more about the agendas pushed forward by the second President of the United States. The race dynamic between the white leader and the black vampires speaks volumes, but just exactly what it’s truly meant to represent is still up for debate.
I will say, while I am completely invested in the
series and have loved how dense each entry has been, I did feel the revolution
started a bit early. I could’ve done with two more issues of world building and
perhaps more exploration of the vampires themselves. Issue #4 takes a plunge
into big story developments and, while exciting, it does feel a bit rushed.
Shawn Alexander’s art continues to impress. It really digs into the grittiness of the setting, but it also plays with realism in a way that keeps the more fantastical elements of the story grounded. It heightens the horror and continues to produce some nasty-looking vampires.
Luis NCT’s colors, on the other hand, do a fantastic job of helping the art maintain a balance between its fantasy and its realism. They have a way of accentuating the more visceral sequences while also setting the tone for the moments that need an additional dose of darkness to really be effective. Visually, this comic is a well-oiled machine. The script wraps itself around this beautifully.
Killadelphia #4 speeds things up quite a bit—perhaps a bit too quickly—but the quality of the storytelling hasn’t dipped not one bit. There are traces of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend here, and even a bit of Candyman in terms of ambiance. I’m eager to see what else gets thrown in the ring, because we got a vampire revolution firing up and it looks like it’s about to get real bloody.

It’s not just politicians and political organizations getting in on the Star Wars fun. The Philadelphia Police Department posted on Facebook that spoiling Star Wars: The Force Awakens is not a crime, though Sith behavior is.
What’s even better is the responses back from the police department to the smart-ass comments that followed.
Of course, such humor doesn’t absolve the police from acting like the Empire/First Order themselves. Here’ssomeexamples.
Now, to find out the police force’s stance on the Black Hood!
This weekend’s 2015 Wizard World Comic Con Philadelphia brought thousands of comic and pop culture enthusiasts to the Philadelphia Convention Center to partake in an event that seems to grow in size (and guest quality) every year. Some big names that were of interest to the assembled masses were former Doctor Who stars David Tenant and Billie Piper, Arrow stars Stephen Amel and Katie Cassidy, and the legendary Burt Reynolds. Neal Adams and Peter David were also in attendance, headlining the crop of comic book guests.
A large amount of toy and collectible vendors were also on hand with a wide array of action figures, comic books, and, of course, an extreme amount of Funko Pop! vendors that offered plenty of hard to find figures, variants, and convention exclusives. I left with 19 pops. I have a problem.
Vendors also offered several unique items like shoes, purses, and jewelry emblazoned with many popular characters. This wasn’t a show built to cater exclusively for people searching for back issues or the latest Hot Toys selections. Need a lightsaber? Go to the Ultrasaber booth. Leather messenger bags or corsets? There was a booth for you as well.
This year’s cosplay parade seemed to offer fewer popular characters like Batman, Robin, and the Green Lantern, but The Flash, Harley Quinn, and Deadpool were all over the place, including a group of a dozen or so coordinated Flash cosplayers who roamed the floor together, mimicking the speed of the Scarlet Speedster.
Here’s a look at some of the best cosplay from the convention.

WWE, TV, Movie Star Bill Goldberg To Attend Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con
Joins Bruce Campbell, Adam Baldwin, Pam Grier, 300+ Celebrity Guests, Leading Comic Book Artists and Writers, June 17-19, 2011 at Pennsylvania Convention Center
NEW YORK and PHILADELPHIA, May 16, 2011 – Wizard World Inc. (WIZD) is proud to announce that popular WWE professional wrestler, television and movie star Bill Goldberg has joined a standout list of celebrity guests scheduled to attend the 11th annual Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Goldberg, who will be making his first Wizard World event appearance, will meet fans on Saturday, June 18th. The event, which will feature more than 300 celebrities, comic book creators and great guests, will be held June 17-19.
Goldberg followed in the paths of many wrestlers who have made the transition from the gridiron to the squared circle to become wrestling stars – he just did so faster and to a greater magnitude than anyone else in history. In only his second year in the business, Goldberg became one of the biggest names the wrestling business has ever seen. And now, Goldberg has transitioned from being a star in the WWE to a television and feature film star.
“Bill Goldberg is an iconic figure to a generation of fans of wrestling and the WWE,” said Gareb Shamus, Wizard World CEO. “He will bring a whole new crowd of fans to Comic Con and the city of Philadelphia. I just hope he doesn’t ‘Jackhammer’ me.”
In addition to Goldberg, other headline guests on the Philadelphia Comic Con guest list include Bruce Campbell, Adam Baldwin, Pam Grier, Vivica A. Fox, Julie Benz and Billy Dee Williams. The event will bring together thousands of fans of all ages and dozens of celebrities and industry professionals to celebrate the best in pop culture, movies, comics, toys, video gaming, television, gaming, original art, collectibles, contests and more.
Goldberg was not a typical wrestling fan growing up, but instead focused most of his attention on football. An excellent player in high school, Goldberg starred as an All-SEC and All-American Nose Guard at the University of Georgia. When his career as a Bulldog was over, he eyed stardom in the National Football League. After spending time with the Los Angeles Rams and then winning the World Bowl with the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football, Goldberg signed on with the Atlanta Falcons in 1991. After three years with the team he suffered a torn abdominal muscle which put him out for the 1994 season. Goldberg was signed by the Carolina Panthers in 1995, but could not rebound from the injury sufficiently enough to play. He was thus forced to retire from football.
Goldberg never planned on becoming a professional wrestler. He crossed paths with many World Championship Wrestling stars while living in Atlanta. Though the world of wrestling was intriguing to him, joining the ranks of professional wrestlers was not an option that Goldberg seriously considered at the time. Later, Goldberg was working out in a gym owned by Lex Luger and Sting and was convinced by Sting to take a chance in the squared circle. After months of training in the WCW Power Plant, Goldberg made his official professional debut in WCW against Hugh Morrus, pinning the 300 pound wrestler. The next year and a half would be among the most remarkable periods in professional wrestling history.
Other wrestling guests scheduled to attend Philadelphia Comic Con include “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Virgil, Candice Michelle, Torrie Wilson, and Brimstone.
Children and adult attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite villain, superhero or pop culture personality for the chance to win special prizes in costume contests. Event-goers may also try their hand at interactive product exhibits and shop for collectible comics, movie and television memorabilia, toys and games at more than 200 dealer booths.
