Phantom Road #15

(W) Jeff Lemire (A) Gabriel Hernández Walta

Agent Weaver risks everything to save his daughter Theresa, sacrificing his own life to the Other Place in exchange for hers. Or are memories not to be trusted in these traumatic histories? Did Agent Donald Weaver survive, and is Agent Hawaii on the side of true evil after all?

Phantom Road #15

Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta take fans on a tour of a grisly murder mystery in Phantom Road Vol. 3 this October

The Eisner Award nominated, supernatural mystery series Phantom Road—by master storytellers Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta—will take a chilling turn into the heart of a brutal murder investigation with Occult undertones this October. The Phantom Road, Vol. 3 trade paperback will collect issues #11-15 and arrive from Image Comics just in time for Halloween.

Phantom Road, Vol. 3 plunges readers deeper into its eerie mythology—where strange leylines, monstrous entities, and a web of roadside horrors all lead back to a hair-raising conspiracy known as Project Jackknife.

Set in 1997, fans follow Agent Donald Weaver as he’s dispatched to rural Wisconsin to probe a string of grisly murders. Teamed with the unpredictable Agent Jimmy Harold, Weaver unearths something far more disturbing: a pattern connecting the Billy Bear truck stops, supernatural energy fields, and an ancient Evil bleeding through the cracks of reality.

The clues are piling up, but the truth is darker—and more dangerous—than anyone imagined.

With its signature mix of cryptic suspense, emotional depth, and jaw-dropping revelations, Phantom Road continues to grip fans of Twin Peaks, The Department of Truth, The X-Files, Gideon Falls, and Revival with its unique, atmospheric world building.

Phantom Road, Volume Three trade paperback (ISBN: 9781534332867, Lunar Code 0825IM0478) will be available at local comic book shops on Wednesday, October 8 and independent bookstores, BookshopAmazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Indigo, and Waterstones on Tuesday, October 21.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

TRAVELING TO MARS #5

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

007: For King or Country #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – We loved the last miniseries and we’re expecting more fun with this one. Bond fans won’t want to miss out on this.

All the Devils Are Here #1 (Scout Comics) – It says it reinvents the exorcism story, and we’re interested in seeing how it does and if it pulls it off.

Ambassadors #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was an interesting mix of Willy Wonka and superheroes and how it ties in Millarworld’s bigger picture has us intrigued.

Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1 (Marvel) – An event is coming and this kicks things off!

Dark Ride #5 (Image Comics) – We’re loving this horror series and excited to see where the next arc goes. Who’s corrupted? What are these demons? We want to know more!

Giant Kokju #1 (Image Comics) – A twist(ed) take on the giant monster genre.

The Gimmick #2 (AHOY Comics) – This superpowers meets wrestling series had a very interesting debut and we want to see where it goes from there.

Great British Bump off #1 (Dark Horse) – Described as an Agatha Christie-styled murder mystery set in a competitive baking competition, that has us completely sold on this.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (Marvel) – The first issue is entertaining and has us wanting to find out what more happened. Read our early review.

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 6 (VIZ Media) – The series has been great so far changing up the kaiju concept and then it did it again after well into the series. We want to see what happens next! Great action. Great images. Lots of fun.

Maniac of New York: Don’t Call it a Comeback #2 (AfterShock) – You thought Harry was killed? Guess what, that’s not the case. We’re loving this horror franchise.

Missing You (IDW Publishing) – Siblings who recently lost their mother bring an injured deer home to rescue it. We’re already holding back tears.

Phantom Road #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was really interesting with a pair of individuals transported to a strange world. We’re not quite sure what’s going on and want to find out more.

Red Zone #2 (AWA Studios) – The series about an American Professor of Russian of Slavic studies being called in by the US government for a secret mission to Russia is interesting considering the state of the world.

Seasons Have Teeth #1 (BOOM! Studios) – In a drab, colorless world, the seasons bring change… and also destruction. The seasons arrive to a retired conflict photographer as personified, god-like creatures. Sounds original!

Space Job #3 (Dark Horse) – Each issue has had us cracking up in this workplace comedy meets Star Trek.

Star Wars: Ewoks #1 (Marvel) – Ewoks. Nuff said.

TMNT/Usagi Yojimbo: Wherewhen #1 (IDW Publishing) – It’s TMNT meets Usagi Yojimbo. We don’t need any more reason to be excited for this.

Traveling to Mars #5 (Ablaze) – The series has been an amazing mix of satire, comedy, and drama, all with a ton of heart. One of our favorites this year.

WildC.A.T.s #6 (DC Comics) – The series has delivered great action, solid moments with the characters and finally cracked the code in bringing the Wildstorm world into the DCU!

Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Walta’s Phantom Road #1 sells out and heads back to print

Hot new series Phantom Road—by Sentient creative team Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta—is burning up the pavement with the first issue already wiped out completely at the distributor level and reorders escalating by the minute. Image Comics is fast-tracing the debut issue back to print this week in order to keep up with the breakneck speed of buzz for this wildly popular new title. This reprint will land on shelves same day as Phantom Road #2—just in time for customers eager to jump on board for the ride.

In Phantom Road, Dom is a long-haul truck driver attempting to stay ahead of his tragic past. Phantom Road #1 kicks off a horror road trip

Phantom Road #1

Dom is a long-haul truck driver attempting to stay ahead of his tragic past. When he stops one night to assist Birdie, who has been in a massive car crash, they pull an artifact from the wreckage that throws their lives into fifth gear. Suddenly, a typical midnight run has become a frantic journey through a surreal world where Dom and Birdie find themselves the quarry of strange and impossible monsters. Phantom Road #1 kicks off an interesting horror fantasy series that leaves you wanting to find out more.

Written by Jeff Lemire, Phantom Road #1 features a lot of familiar aspects in Lemire’s writing as well as a good mystery to figure out. In the end, it’s two individuals thrown into some weird world by a mysterious object, something that’s been in recent series like The Woods and Beyond the Breach. The latter of the two feeling somewhat similar. But, it’s the deeper focus on characters that makes the debut stand out.

Often, Lemire’s stories have to do with fathers and their children. This one is no different as Lemire puts the emphasis on Dom’s absence from his family and generally horrible treatment and attitude towards them. Take that rough aspect and compare it in how he treats the stranger Birdie and we get a complicated and not so clear cut of a character. It’s that sort of human emotion and turmoil Lemire likes to focus on and where his stories often shine.

Joining Lemire is artist Gabriel H. Walta, who he has worked with before on Sentient. With Jordie Bellaire on color and lettering by Steve Wands, the comic has an interesting look that befits the world being crafted. There’s a certain emptiness to the characters and situations both literal and metaphorical. The latter half of the comic, the emptiness is clear on the road and the word Dom and Birdie are sent to. In the former half, it’s an emptiness of character. All of it is delivered in a rather drab coloring befitting the story.

Phantom Road #1 is a slow start but an interesting one. There’s a lot of questions set up but also a focus on the characters and direct danger that gives the issue a bit of a punch. It’s a good start though the team has done better. Still, Lemire, Walta, Bellaire, and Wands is a creative team that you know you can count on paying off in the end and based on the start, I’d expect that here too.
