In a celebration of the history of Marvel Horror comes The Best of Marvel’s Vampire Tales Volume One, the first in a series of Dark Horse collaborations with Marvel Comics to excavate the hidden corners of the Marvel Universe and re-present its most ghoulish tales in beautiful archival hardcover editions. Helmed by comics historians Chris Ryall and John Lind, alongside designer Chris Shadoian, the oversized collection will feature full-color reproductions of the covers of Vampire Tales, along with a brand-new introduction and countless stories from one of the magazines that ignited a new horror-comics boom for Marvel.

One of the black-and-white horror anthologies debuted by Marvel Comics in 1973, Vampire Tales, included stories of bloodsucking fiends as both heroes, villains, and anti-heroes, involving fan-favorites like the reluctant monster Morbius, the Living Vampire; the first solo tales featuring Blade the Vampire Slayer; and Dracula’s daughter, the ever-lethal Lilith. Vampire Tales magazine also introduced the comic-book world to Satana, the Devil’s Daughter, and her introductory stories are also in this first volume. Now, fans will experience these stories again in archival size and style completing any horror collection.

Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard

Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard

In the most recent episode of Young Sheldon, it exposed one of the open secrets of Star Trek fandom. That there lies a schism between the different generations. Of course, this is nothing new. As this very issue lies within the Star Wars fandom, one which divides them, and is very apparent in the how the fans feel about The Book Of Boba Fett.  

As the scene that expositions this difference, was when Sheldon got into a debate with another fan of whether or not ST:TNG is as good or better than ST:TOS. They had gone over all the reasons why one was better than the other. As a fan of all the series, I can honestly say that love the shows after the original cast, as they broadened that world and made us all fall in love with new characters and worlds. I especially ST:TNG, as it  fulfilled the promise the original series gave the world.. As I am partial to one captain, and with his new series, I can see I am not the only one , as IDW decided to do a collection of past stories in in a beautiful one shot, Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard.

In “The Q Conflict”, Q creates a conflict between the TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager crews. In “The Mirror Broken#1”, we find a very evil version of the crew in the Mirror Universe, one where war is where they thrive. In “ DC Originals:TNG#1-Return to Raimon Part 1”,Picard uncovers a conspiracy to murder a monarch, one that puts the away crew in danger. In the last story“Picard#1”,  we find out about what transpired in Picard’s final year before the events of the first season of Picard.

Overall, Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard is an excellent collection that shows the character’s transcendence. The stories by the different creators are fun and action packed. The art by the different creators are beautiful. Altogether, this set of stories shows why fans have long loved this character.

The Inkwell Awards has announced the winners of its 14th annual awards for excellence

The Inkwell Awards has announced the winners of its 14th annual awards for excellence in the comic-book inking art form. Results are normally first made public at its live awards ceremony during its host show, The Great Philadelphia Comic Con, but at present, due to uncertainties with the Covid-19 pandemic, the show status is unknown and the ceremony is canceled.

Nominees were chosen by a separate and independent nomination committee on their own as well as from artist submissions. Voting by professionals and fans took place for one week in March on the official ballot at the non-profit advocacy’s website. After 1587 ballots were tallied, one winner was chosen in each of five categories based on printed American interior comic-book work cover-dated 2020.

As begun last year, the Inkwells’ internal committee chose to not limit lifetime achievement awards within a given year. They selected four inductees for the annual Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame and three recipients for the Stacey Aragon Special Recognition Award (SASRA). There were no internal Silver Inkwell Awards recipients this year but there were two internal Above & Beyond Awards given to Bob Bretall and Johnny B. Gerardy for 10 years of Nomination Committee service.

Ballot nominees are listed below with their credits and the percentage of votes received by the winners, along with the other nominees in alphabetical order.

  • FAVORITE INKER (Favorite ink artist over the pencil work of another artist; cannot also be nominated for the “Props” award): Ruy Jose (41%) (Immortal Hulk [Marvel]).
    Other nominees: Jonathan Glapion, Klaus Janson, Joe Prado.
  • MOST-ADAPTABLE (Artist showing exceptional ink style versatility over other pencillers): Norm Rapmund (42%) (Batman Beyond, Detective Comics, The Flash, Flash Forward, Dark Nights Death Metal: The Multiverse Who Laughs (one-shot), Wonder Woman [DC]).
    Other nominees: Marc Deering, Daniel Henriques, Matt Santorelli, LeBeau Underwood.
  • PROPS (Inker deserving of more attention): Eber Ferreira (41%) (Speed Metal (one-shot), Freedom Fighters, Justice League [DC]).
