Nintendo Sues the Trump Administration Over Tariffs

Nintendo has joined hundreds of corporations suing the Trump Administration to get back tariffs paid.  Those tariffs were deemed illegal by the U.S. Supreme Court towards the end of February.

Nintendo is an interesting court case as it not only can show “injury” from the tariffs paid, but it not only raised prices, it delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2.

Nintendo is asking for a refund of the IEEPA duties paid along with interest, reasonable attorney fees, and granting any more relief that might be “just and proper.”

The question still remains if consumers will see any relief from this whether in the form of getting money back, especially those who paid tariffs directly, or in lower retail prices.

Trump’s Tariff Tax Delays Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pre-Orders

Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo recently officially revealed the Switch 2, the successor to their popular Switch video game console. The pre-orders were to being on April 9, but Nintendo has announced that it is delaying the pre-orders due to the new tariffs enacted in the US by President Trump set to go into effect on April 5. The new console was to retail for $450 but the tariffs could, and likely would, drive the price much higher.

The official statement from Nintendo:

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.

President Trump announced a 10% across the board tariff rate with some countries seeing much higher rates including China, Vietnam, and Japan, where a lot of video game production happens.

In 2023 the top five countries who exported video game-related equipment included:

  1. China (accounting for 58.1% of exports)
  2. Japan (6.75)
  3. United States (5.6%)
  4. Vietnam (4.5%)
  5. Germany (4.3%)

What makes Nintendo’s decision and launch more difficult is the erratic nature of President Trump who has threatened and enacted a lot of economic hardship and has often delayed the implementation or soon walked it back after implementation.

The Second Chapter of the DLC for Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet Launches December 14

Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet

The Pokémon Company International has announced more details about The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 2: The Indigo Disk DLC for the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet video games. The Indigo Disk launches exclusively on the Nintendo Switch family of systems on December 14, 2023.

The Synchro Machine
Once players progress far enough in their adventure in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 2: The Indigo Disk, they’ll be able to use a device called the Synchro Machine to see the world through the eyes of their Pokémon. While synchronized with one of their Pokémon, they’ll be able to move around and battle wild Pokémon—a fresh new way to play the game. It appears that this device is still a prototype. Players will be able to use it once they’ve helped a scientist in the Terarium with her research.

The Power of Flight
The Legendary Pokémon Koraidon or Miraidon will gain the power to fly for the first time when Trainers take on the Elite Trial set by Amarys of the BB League Elite Four. While at first this power is believed to be only temporarily imparted, it can apparently be made permanent, allowing Koraidon and Miraidon to fly at any time—but only once players have made it far enough in their adventure. Trainers will be able to fly wherever they please with their Legendary Pokémon and enjoy the sense of freedom that only an open world can provide.

Legendary Pokémon
After completing the main story of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 2: The Indigo Disk, Trainers can meet a curious character named Snacksworth at Blueberry Academy. By completing Blueberry Quests (BBQs) in the Terarium, Trainers can earn snacks from Snacksworth that will allow them to encounter certain Legendary Pokémon from throughout the series back in the Paldea region! He’ll also share his extensive knowledge about these Pokémon with Trainers—as well as tall tales of his own heroic encounters with them.

Rare Graded Video Games Fetch High Bids in Heritage Auction

Video game nostalgia has come a long way – once the realm of people who remembered playing Pong, there are now nearly 50 years of video game history living rent-free in our heads, and along with that comes the desire to recapture our respective glory days. Last week, Heritage Auctions closed an auction featuring a variety of vintage video games and game systems, many graded by the Video Game Authority (VGA), and several of them went for high dollar values.

The highest bid received in the entire auction was for the Nintendo Entertainment Deluxe Set, which included the iconic NES console, two controllers, a Zapper light gun, R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy), and two boxed games: Gyromite and Duck Hunt. Graded at 85 NM+ by the VGA, this unopened set went for $120,000 with buyer premium.

Other notable VGA-graded items in the auction:

  • A sealed copy of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 system sold for $10,800. In addition to being a fun game with great box art, it is also the first appearance of Waluigi, partner to Wario and rival to Luigi. It received a grade of 90 NM+/MT.
  • An open (but complete) Nintendo 64 game console was graded at 85+ NM+ (Qualified) and sold for $8,400. While it didn’t outlast its competitor, Sony’s Playstation, this relatively rare system became famous for thoroughly enjoyable games like Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye.
  • Measuring approximately 2 feet squared, a bundled “Value Pak” of a Super NES console with controller, a Super NES Super Scope 6 with six unnamed games, and three extra games – Battle ClashYoshi’s Safari, and Metal Combat: Falcon’s Revenge – received a grade of 85+ NM+ from the VGA, and sold for $10,200.
