Review: Ninja-K #8

The Jonin, the mysterious mentor behind the program that trained MI6’s elite ninja assassins, has resurfaced in Mexico City at the head of a covert cabal of long-lived and near-immortal renegades with incredible powers…and a mission that could destabilize human civilization as we know it!

I haven’t been as happy with a comic as I was when I finished Ninja-K #8 in a long time. But I’m jumping ahead of myself here.

Last issue saw Ninjak assemble a team of Valiant heroes of various talents geared specifically to take on a villainous cabal who may have slightly got the drop on our heroes at the end of Ninja-K #7. Picking up right where the previous issue left off, we get to see a very fast paced airborne sequence that transitions to  the confrontation that Christos Gage spent all of last issue building toward. And it’s a confrontation that lasts for almost the entire comic in what proves to be a frantic action sequence that gives each character a chance to shine – all the while you’re never quite sure who could actually be considered as winning the fight. What you can be sure of, however, is that between Juan Jose Ryp and Jordie Bellaire you couldn’t expect a better illustrated battle. Bellaire’s colours are a wonderful counterpoint to the detailed line work of Ryp, the colourist brings out the detail in a way that never leaves the reader feeling over stimulated as they feast their eyes upon the chaos within the pages of the comic.

The plot itself is fairly straight forward, and barely needs any space to talk about other than to say that this is a comic where the art is the focus – I’m not saying the plot is bad, far from it, because this action packed issue is the result of the slower paced Ninja-K #7, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. But the most exciting thing about this comic, for me? Well that’d be spoiler I won’t be giving – you’ll just have to read right to the end to find out what had me grinning from ear to ear upon finishing Ninja-K #8.

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Top Pick: Avengers #2 (Marvel) – After the fantastic first issue, I am super excited for this one and many more from Aaron and company. Celestials falling to the Earth? That is how you set the tone for an epic series!

Curse Words #14 (Image) – I love this crazy book. Charles Soule balances action, comedy, and ridiculous things all in one comic so well. Talking Koalas and a Wizard fight!

Cable #157 (Marvel) – This book has been getting better and better. I have always loved Cable and it feels like it is really bringing back the classic stuff I love about the character and his best runs.

The Punisher #224 (Marvel) – Frank Castle returns to the States and now Captain Marvel is on his tail. I cannot wait for this showdown or whatever happens with this. It has been a great run so far!

Daredevil #602 (Marvel) – Mayor Fisk or Mayor Murdock? This has been a fantastic run and Soule has given us action and twists that I didn’t expect. I am excited to see how this continues.

Top Pick: Ninja-K #7 (Valiant) – There are some comics that I am genuinely so excited to read every month, and this is one of them. I can’t say enough good things about the writing, the art, the everything. There are two comics from Valiant out this week, and the only reason this is on top is because the coin landed on tails.

Bloodshot Salvation #9 (Valiant) – See above. Except for tails and second place.

Mighty Thor: Gates Of Valhalla #1 (Marvel) – I’ve been itching for more Thor after seeing Infinity War, and why not grab a new #1 issue?

Top Pick: Dodge City #3 (BOOM! Studios) – Dodge ball in comics! This series has been so much fun so far with great characters, great art… it’s a comic that just puts a smile on my face.

Barrier #3 (Image Comics/Panel Syndicate) – An absolutely amazing series first released digitally and now in print. Timely and brilliant, it’s a must get.

Fence #6 (BOOM! Studios) – Like Dodge City, this one focuses on a sport… fencing! Also has great characters and fantastic art. Another series that’s just fun.

Flavor #1 (Image Comics) – A new series from Image that takes place in a magical world and revolves around cooking. Absolutely fantastic and a must get this week.

James Bond: The Body #5 (Dynamite Entertainment) – A different take on James Bond focusing on the grittier aspects of it all and a man just beat down.

Death of Love #4 (Image Comics) –  Imagine if you will: a young man with a chainsaw can see the creatures that float around making people fall in love. What’s he gonna use that chainsaw for? Is it good? Is it evil? And what about these cupidae? What role does a mortal dude have in messing in the affairs of such ephemeral creatures? Issue #4 of DEATH OF LOVE promises to answer only some of these questions while leaving way more on the floor. If you missed this book in single issues, keep an eye out of the Trade this August.

Rat Queens #9 (Image Comics) –  All girl warriors, all the time. That’s the promise of RAT QUEENS and for years now, not matter the battle, that is what they deliver. Part four of THE COLOSSAL MAGIC NOTHING has Reality Wizards and interdimensional wizards. If anyone can deal with all that crazy and still come out on top, it’s the Rat Queens. Probably.

Goosebumps: Download and Die #3 (IDW Publishing) – Not only has GOOSEBUMPS been updated to include digital spooks, it’s got an all-new, all-female creative team. Goosebumps works because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. The plot is simple: defeat the monster, save the town. But, as with most GOOSEBUMPS tales, there are sure to be a few Bumps in the night along the way.

The Mighty Thor at the Gates of Valhalla #1 (Marvel) – Thor is such good fun in any format, and personally I love when his world expands beyond himself. GATES OF VALHALLA may have some heavy plot points (saving Jane/Thor’s life), but it keeps the lighthearted moments that draw me back to Asgard time and again. The Godesses of Thunder may be my new religious figures, and the meta-call to “the Golden age of Thor” is absolutely delightful.

Star Wars: Lost Stars Graphic Novel Vol #1 (Yen Press) – Did you read Claudia Gray’s books are among the most celebrated of the new Star Wars Canon. Her YA novel Lost Stars was a smash-hit, and now I can’t wait to see how it translates to a graphic novel. The source material has plenty to play with–action, romance, intrigue, Imperial Academy classes, brainwashing….the list goes on. If you’re not a big novel reader but love a good graphic tale, this might be the best way to dive into Gray’s work.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Top Pick: Bloodshot Salvation #8 (Valiant) – After the ambitious issue told from Bloodshot’s point of view where you saw what he saw (only he was blind s we got a black comic with the only art on the pages being in the form of the panel borders), I’m really interested to see how Lemire follows that up. While I have no doubt this will be a really good comic, there is precedence after all, I’m curious to see how it stands up after #7 – a comic that I feel is incredible.

Ninja-K #6 (Valiant) – In any other week this would be on top of my Most Wanted list. In fact there’s such a gulf between this and the next that I didn’t bother to write it down. Why bother, really?

Top Pick: Oblivion Song #2 (Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment) – A new series is always exciting, and when Kirkman creates a new universe, it’s even more exciting. After a set up issue, it will be great to see what this world has in store. This is a solid pick for fans of sci-fi dystopian tales.

Gideon Falls #2 (Image Comics) – Another new series from a great writer, Lemire. I enjoyed the tone of the first issue, even if it did make me a little anxious. This is one freaky little town. Great for fans of horror.

The Avengers #688 (Marvel) – This train keeps rolling! The elders are coming to their endgame and each week this book juggles so many characters and does it effectively. This could become a classic Avengers tale.

X-Men Red #3 (Marvel) – Jean Grey has returned and with her comes a new team. This book deals with old school X-book themes like racism and mutants, and how they fit into the world of humanity. The first two issues have been good.

Captain America #700 (Marvel) – Waid’s time on the book is coming to a close, and Coates is beginning his run soon. This is a landmark issue and the end of a time travel arc that has been fun. It’s classic Captain America and the end of a run that acts as a palate cleanser to Hydra-Cap.

Top Pick: Dodge City #2 (BOOM! Studios) – This is a week with lots of solid new releases and fantastic comics coming out so to narrow them down to five is a tough one. That being said, this is a comic that’s on the top of my pile to read. The first issue was cute, entertaining, just a lot of fun. A comic about dodge ball? Yeah, I’m sold.

Big Planet Comics Red (Big Planet/Retrofit Comics) – An anthology featuring 15 artists from the DMV (Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia). This publisher consistently puts out amazing indie comics.

Crude #1 (Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment) – I read this first issue and it’s a gut punch of a story. Boiled down, it’s a revenge story, but the details, the setting, it’s just a raw and gritty comic that’s so good.

Domino #1 (Marvel) – Gail Simone writing Domino. Nuff said.

Exiles #1 (Marvel) – While I haven’t been a fan of this series in the past, the fact writer Saladin Ahmed is handling this volume has me excited.
