Negaduck #1 puts a fun spotlight on the Darkwing Duck villain

Negaduck #1

I’m a fan of Darkwing Duck. It’s an animated series that sticks with me 30 years after I religiously watched it as a kid. It stood on its own, acted as an homage, and spoofed classic comics all at the same time, delivering action, humor, and heart along the way. One thing that stands out even today are the show’s villains. A hero is only as good as their villains and Darkwing Duck had an amazing group of rogues. I could debate who was the best of the worst but up there is Negaduck, a “mirror universe” type villain who is the antithesis of everything Darkwing Duck is. Negaduck #1 reminds us of that and more in a fun debut that captures the Darkwing magic.

Written by Jeff Parker, Negaduck #1 has the dastardly villain escaping from prison and on a mission. The mission? Come up with a new evil plan. But, there’s a lot of other villains out there to compete with and Negaduck wants to have the best plan out there. So, the issue has a little fun as Negaduck keeps on coming up with plans but finds other already doing them. It’s a great introduction to this world for those who might be new but also fun for longtime fans of the series.

Not surprisingly, Parker nails the tone that made the animated series, and current comic series, so great. There’s a balance of laughs and seriousness to it all that creates a story that feels like it has stakes but also doesn’t take itself too seriously. The comic also keeps up the over the top tone of schemes as we see the villains causing chaos as they do.

The art by Ciro Cangialosi is solid. It captures the look of Darkwing Duck perfectly with all of the slapstick-ish humor. The colors pop and are bright and the comic flows perfectly as far as its visuals with the current comic series and classic animated series. This is a classic look and all of the comics look like a continuation visually of the animated series.

Negaduck #1 is a great first companion series to the current Darkwing Duck ongoing comic. It gives us another dip into the world which hasn’t lost a step in the decades since the animated series ended. It also puts the focus on the villains who, beyond being thorns in the sides of our heroes, haven’t gotten this type of spotlight before. It’s an exciting expansion to the series and hopefully the start of a lot more to come.

Negaduck #1

writer: Jeff Parker
artist: Ciro Cangialosi
covers: Joshua Middleton (A), Jae Lee (B), Trish Forstner (C), Steve Lieber (D), Action Figure (E), Blank Authentix (F)
FC | 32 pages | Adventure | $3.99 | All Ages

He’s the exact opposite of DD in every way… evil, nefarious, dedicated to stealing lollipops from kids and not helping grandmas across the street! And now, he’s ready to begin a reign of crime and terror the likes of which St. Canard has never seen — except… dang it, all of the other villains are ripping off his ideas! What’s a criminal mastermind to do when the city’s thick with other criminals, stealing his shine? Why, take his villainy on the road, of course!

Written with fiendish glee by arch-author Jeff Parker and illustrated by the suspiciously talented Ciro Cangialosi, Negaduck features a regular rogues’ gallery of cover artists, including Joshua Middleton, Jae Lee, Trish Forstner, and a special Whiteout homage cover by that series’ co-creator, Steve Lieber!

Negaduck #1

Darkwing Duck’s Archnemesis Negaduck Flies into a New Series!

He’s not the terror that flaps in the night… In fact, he’s the screeching fingernail on the chalkboard of justice! He’s the sour ball in the candy jar of goodness. He’s… Negaduck! And the Disney fan-favorite foe is making his way into his very own comic series this fall from writer Jeff Parker!

Darkwing Duck is the honorable protector of St. Canard, and a strong family man to his daughter Gosalyn. Over in his native Negaverse, Negaduck is the polar opposite of everything Drake Mallard stands for, his evil doppelganger in every way. Negaduck is nefarious and dedicated to stealing lollipops from children and not helping grandmothers cross the street! Now, in his brand-new title, he’s revving up a reign of crime and terror of record levels. There’s only one problem… all the other criminals are ripping off his ideas — so he’s taking his show on the road!

He’s matched up with artist Ciro Cangialosi, who comes equipped with a brilliant cartooning style that will complement the main Darkwing series by Carlo Cid Lauro well and stand out on its own. Observant fans and collectors will notice Cangialosi has already been drawing several of the fun action figure variants for Darkwing Duck, including the one featuring Negaduck on issue #6!

Not only will fans enjoy the large hat and large ego of Negaduck in the series, but other great characters from the mythos will appear as well, such as The Fearsome Four and Taurus Bulba right off the bat!

In addition to the stylings of Cangialosi inside the book, a top team of illustrators have assembled to depict the fowlest of them all in a range of stunning, diverse covers. Superstar Joshua Middleton leads the charge, acclaimed for his jaw-dropping depictions of characters like Aquaman, Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. Two of Dynamite’s Disney comics mainstays return, in Jae Lee and Trish Forstner. Jeff Parker’s frequent fan-favorite collaborator Steve Lieber checks in, with his first cover being a bit of a subtle nod to his work Whiteout. Then Parker himself tackles the action figure cover, tapping into his own artist side.

Negaduck #1 is slated for release in September 2023.
