Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

gotham academy 2 coverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Gotham Academy #2 (DC Comics) – Did you read the first issue? That alone should really be all that you need to know as to why we’re looking forward to the second issue. This tween focused series isa breath of fresh air, and a great addition to DC’s library. Here’s hoping we see more of this.

Avengers and X-Men: AXIS #4 (Marvel) – The first part of Marvel’s big event has wrapped up, and this issue kicks off the second story arc. The end of the last one was interesting to say the least. While overall the even has been mixed, it’s definitely moving the Marvel universe along.

The Ghost Fleet #1 (Dark Horse) – When one of the world’s most elite combat-trained truckers takes a forbidden peek at his payload, he uncovers a conspiracy that will change his life forever! A new series of badass action on the open road begins here! Sounds interesting enough.

Giant Robot Warrior Maintenance Crew #2 (Cosmic Times) – We’ve seen large robots battle, but who actually gets them to work? This series answers that question. The first issue was solid, and hoping the second is just as entertaining.

The Humans #1 (Image Comics) – Monkey biker gangs, nuff said. Courtesy of Keenan Marshall Keller and Tom Neely. It’s awesome.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 (Dynamite) – Writer Ron Marz takes on a new beginning for the classic character. We already have a review up.

Men of Wrath #2 (Marvel/Icon) – The first issue was impressive, and writer Jason Aaron gives us some more hard boiled crime drama with a mix of family tension.

Terrible Lizard #1 (Oni Press) – The touching story of a girl and her T-Rex… with a healthy dose of collateral damage and monster conflict on the side. Courtesy of writer Cullen Bunn.

Tooth & Claw #1 (Image Comics) – Writer Kurt Busiek’s story of an original high-fantasy epic for mature readers, as a secret conclave of wizards brings a legendary champion back through time to save the world, with disastrous consequences.

The Zoohunters #1 (Aspen Comics) – Abros Kel is a ZooHunter—a man who is hired to capture animals for zoos on alien worlds. He and his young son Ty have lost everything due to a tragedy, and together this uncomfortable pair set out into the stars to train Ty as a ZooHunter. Along the way they encounter scores of alien life-forms on far away worlds including Qaurec—an unscrupulous rival ZooHunter who is hunting Abros down. Can Abros and Ty stay one step ahead of his villainy and prove successful in their quest? A new series from Aspen!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Thor_1_Ribic_Design_VariantWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up. And this is a week that this list could easily be double the size.

Pick of the Week: Thor #1 (Marvel) – Could anything else be in this top spot? This week debuts the new female Thor, yes that thing you’re seeing in a lot of media outside of comics. It’s been a controversial move, but we’re betting writer Jason Aaron will pull this off like he does pretty much everything else.

Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1 (Marvel) – Original Sin shook up the Marvel universe radically changing Nick Fury’s role into a cosmic assassin protecting Earth. He has moved on, but it looks like Bucky will now be stepping into those shoes. Another radical shift, and it should be interesting to see how well it’s done.

Captain America #25 (Marvel) – Another passing of the guard this week sees Sam Wilson, The Falcon, stepping into the role of Captain America. A pretty important issue for sure.

Critical Hit #1 (Black Mask Studios) – Writer Matt Miner‘s Liberator continues in this new volume focusing on the previous series’ two heroines. It’s comics with a message, one you don’t see in comics too often.

Fiction Squad #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Spinning out of Paul Jenkin’s Fairy Tale universe. It’s a detective story that sounds awesome and looks amazing.

Gotham Academy #1 (DC Comics) – We’re guessing this is a perfect series for fans of Gotham. A new comic that looks at the students at a prestigious Gotham school. It sounds perfect for the tween set.

Guardians 3000 #1 (Marvel) – We’re old school Guardians fans, and this new series is written by our favorite Guardians writer Dan Abnett. Vance Astro, Yondu, Martinex, Starhawk and Charlie-27 are back!

Men of Wrath #1 (Icon/Marvel) – A gritty new limited series launching as part of Marvel’s creator-owned Icon imprint! Witness the story of Ira Rath – the coldest hitman ever to walk on Alabama soil and the black cloud that hangs over his family name. Explore the blood-soaked history of the Rath family as Ira embarks on a job that will decide the fate of his cursed family once and for all.

Ricky Rouse Has a Gun (Self Made Hero) – A graphic novel that skewers copyright and intellectual property, and at the same time pokes fun at the sub-culture that appropriates it all.

Skandalon (Arsenal Pulp Press) – Julie Maroh burst onto the scene in 2013 with Blue Is the Warmest Color, a tender, bittersweet graphic novel about lesbian love. Maroh’s new graphic novel Skandalon is a bold and literary look at sex, drugs, and rock and roll—and the cost of fame. “Skandalon,” a term found in the Gospels, refers to a persistent trap or obstacle.

Aaron & Garney Launch Men of Wrath for Marvel’s ICON Imprint in October!

This October, New York Times bestselling writer Jason Aaron and fan-favorite artist Ron Garney team up once again for a gritty new limited series kicking off in Men of Wrath #1!

Ever since Great Grandfather Isom killed a man over some sheep, a black cloud has hung over the Rath family. Now, over a century later, Ira Rath is the coldest hitman ever to walk on Alabama soil. And he’s just taken a job that will decide the fate of his cursed family once and for all. As the blood-soaked history of the Rath family unfolds, witness the cycle of violence that shaped Ira into the ruthless killer he is today.

In an interview with CBR, Aaron said:

Men of Wrath is about family history. Each issue opens with flashbacks to different generations of the Rath family. We kind of start to see how the cycle of violence begins and gets perpetuated and passed down from generation to generation of this family and kind of culminates in Ira as the worst of the bunch.

Garney added:

Everybody has their history. Some history is more colorful than others. Some are more dysfunctional than others. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I can guarantee this story is bound to hit on many different cylinders for many people because of the family dynamic.

Launched in 2004, Marvel’s ICON imprint is designed specifically for top-tier creators to tell their bold, creator-owned stories featuring their own characters and creations. Producing such critically acclaimed titles like Kick-Ass, Powers and The United States of Murder Inc., Marvel’s ICON imprint has solidified itself as the place to be for exciting stories from A-List creators.
