VIZ Media Launches Shuriken and Pleats By Matsuri Hino

ShurikenAndPleats-GN01VIZ Media has announced the launch of famed creator Matsuri Hino’s new manga (graphic novel) series, Shuriken and Pleats, on March 1st.

Shuriken and Pleats, the story of a schoolgirl who’s also a ninja in modern-day Japan, is the latest title from Hino, who created the pivotal shojo series, Vampire Knight (also published by VIZ Media; rated ‘T+’ for Teens).

Shuriken and Pleats is rated ‘T’ for Teens and will be published in print under the Shojo Beat imprint with an MSRP of $9.99 U.S. / $12.99 CAN. The series also launches digitally on March 1st via VIZManga.com and the VIZ Manga App (iOS and Android), as well as from the Nook, Kobo, Kindle, iBooks, comiXology, and GooglePlay stores. New volumes of the series, which is ongoing in Japan, will be released twice a year.

When the master she has sworn to protect is killed, Mikage Kirio, a skilled ninja, travels to Japan to start a new, peaceful life for herself. But as soon as she arrives, she finds herself fighting to protect the life of Mahito Wakashimatsu, a man who is under attack by a band of ninja. From that time on, Mikage is drawn deeper into the machinations of his powerful family.

Matsuri Hino burst onto the manga scene with her debut title, Kono Yume ga Sametara (When This Dream Is Over), which was published in Japan in LaLa DX magazine. Already possessing strong artistic talent, Hino became a manga artist a mere nine months after she decided to pursue it as a professional career. With the success of her popular series, Captive Hearts and Merupuri (both also published by VIZ Media), Hino has established herself as a major player in the world of shojo manga.

Project BECK to Play at Otakon Matsuri

Project_BECK-matsuriProject BECK, a tribute band for the anime series BECK:Mongolian Chop Squad, will perform at this year’s Matsuri, to be held before Otakon 2015. The band combines the talents of six friends, including voice actor Greg Ayres.

Project BECK came together thanks to a shared love of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, an anime series featuring a group of teenagers who form a band called BECK. Among the show’s fans were the American pop punk band The Cheyenne Line, YouTube musician Kid Yuki, a.k.a. Cody Carsella, and long-time friend and bassist Houston. After years of traveling from state to state attending conventions as fans, Sam Biggs and Peri Arreguin of The Cheyenne Line decided to combine their talents with Cody and Houston. With the help of voice actor Greg Ayres and nerdcore rapper Doctor Awkward, they formed Project BECK to perform their favorite songs from BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad.

Originally formed for a single performance, Project BECK were thrilled to discover so many others
wanted to share in the experience, as well.

Join Sam, Greg, Doc, Peri, Houston, and Cody for their Otakon Matsuri performance, which promises
to be full of loud rock music, adrenaline, and celebration of an anime that was made to — like one of
the show’s songs — “Hit in The U.S.A.”

The Otakon Matsuri is an outdoor street festival that will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 23 at Baltimore’s beautiful West Shore Park at the Inner Harbor. Admission is free to both the Otakorp membership as well as to the general public. The event features many attractions to keep attendees well-occupied: games, contests, prizes, live entertainment, great food, and even Otakon guests, who have been known to stop by and take part in the festivities.

Otakon 2015 will be held July 24-26 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD. Otakon 2015 is celebrating fairy tales, folk stories, myths, and legends.
