In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the original release, the Breathtaker creative team has been fully reunited for a weekend of panels, signings, and exclusives. Comic legends Mark Wheatley, Marc Hempel, Kathy Mix, Mike Gold, and Walter Simonson (writer of the stunning new introduction) will all be on hand to unveil the definitive edition of Breathtaker, newly restored and expanded for Titan Comics.
More than just a reprint, this deluxe edition includes nearly 80 pages of new content, behind-the-scenes material, and the all-new comic story Make Way for the Man — a gripping origin tale of the Breathtaker Device. This thrilling prequel will also be available in a convention-exclusive standalone comic debuting at Baltimore Comic-Con.
Fans can also look forward to a pop-up art show at the convention, showcasing a portion of Marc Hempel’s and Mark Wheatley’s original Breathtaker artwork from the Norman Rockwell Museum touring exhibition. Mark Wheatley is an Eisner, Inkpot, and Golden Lion award-winning creator whose credits include Frankenstein Mobster, EZ Street, Return of the Human, and Hammer of the Gods. His work spans from the Robert E. Howard Foundation book covers to TV (CBS’s The Millers, 2 Broke Girls) and even Lady Gaga’s stage design.
Marc Hempel is known for his iconic work on The Sandman with Neil Gaiman, as well as Gregory, Tug & Buster, and Naked Brain. His art has graced the pages of MAD, Heavy Metal, Disney Adventures, and The Escapist.

Mark Wheatley
An Eisner, Inkpot, Golden Lion, and Overstreet Hall of Fame honoree, Mark Wheatley is the multi-talented creator behind Frankenstein Mobster, EZ Street, and Radical Dreamer. He’s contributed art and storytelling to properties as wide-ranging as Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Ultraman, and Lady Gaga, and his work has appeared in print, television, film, and museum exhibitions.
Marc Hempel
Acclaimed for his art in The Sandman (notably “The Kindly Ones”), Gregory, and Tug & Buster, Marc Hempel’s stylized, emotionally resonant work has appeared in MAD, Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, and Nickelodeon Magazine. He brings both wit and gravity to every panel—and fans can expect plenty of both at the convention.
Mike Gold
A key architect of modern comics publishing, Mike Gold is the co-founder of First Comics and the former editorial director of DC Comics. He edited and developed titles like Jon Sable Freelance, GrimJack, The Question, and American Flagg!, and played a vital role in shaping Breathtaker for its original release. He is also the head of arrogantMGMS and a recipient of the Hero Initiative Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Kathy Mix
An original member of Insight Studios, Kathy Mix has long been a behind-the-scenes force in the creation and production of Insight’s comics and visual projects. She’s been integral to the development of Breathtaker and many other studio efforts, and fans will get a rare chance to meet her in person.
Jennifer Rouse
Composer, sound designer, and voice-over artist, Jennifer Rouse has worked on films, audio dramas, and multimedia productions. Her credits include Songs of Giants, The Death of Poe, and the Frankenstein Mobster audio drama. She brings a unique creative voice to the Insight team, where her musical and dramatic sensibilities amplify the group’s storytelling power.
Glenn Hauman
A long-time Insight ally and the publisher behind ComicMix, Glenn Hauman is a writer, editor, technologist, and activist. Insight Studios, led by the renowned creative duo Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, will bring a powerhouse roster of creators and guests to the 25th annual Baltimore Comic-Con on September 20, 2024. The event, held at the Baltimore Convention Center, will feature the Insight team at Booth #116. Tickets are now available.
Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, known for their collaborations on the Vertigo hit Breathtaker, Blood of the Innocent, and the First Comics series Mars, will headline the Insight Studios delegation. Their extensive work also includes projects like Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg, with their groundbreaking graphic novel Breathtaker set for release from Titan Comics.
Celebrating its twenty-fifth year, the Baltimore Comic-Con also marks Insight Studios’ twenty-fifth consecutive appearance. Joining Wheatley and Hempel are a stellar lineup of creators, including writer-director-graphic novelist Mark Redfield, comic creator Martha Thomases , ComicMix’s Glenn Hauman, comics creator and illustrator Daniel Krall, and actor/sound designer Jennifer Rouse.
At the convention, Mark Wheatley, Mark Redfield, and Jennifer Rouse will present the Frankenstein Mobster Monsterama Audio Drama. This adaptation of Wheatley’s graphic novel features Daniel Roebuck (The Munsters), Debbie Rochon (Exorcism of Fleete Marish), and Mark Redfield. The audio drama is also available for purchase here.
Mark Wheatley’s Nucleus X, fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign, will make its comic-con debut at the Baltimore Comic-Con. This collection features new stories from Mars, Frankenstein Mobster, and Radical Dreamer. Wheatley will also showcase limited edition giclee art prints, including his poster for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon films. Additionally, his Edgar Rice Burroughs Visions of Adventure portfolio and the oversized hardcover Songs of Giants will be available.
Wheatley’s illustrious career includes co-developing Doctor Cthulittle, illustrating for prose books, and creating set pieces for The Black Eyed Peas. His work has been featured on CBS Television’s The Millers and Super Clyde, as well as in Dark Horse Comics’ Jungle Tales of Tarzan. An award-winning creator, Wheatley has been honored with the Inkpot, Golden Lion, Mucker, Gem, Robert E. Howard Foundation, Pulp Factory, Speakeasy, and Eisner Awards. He has been inducted into the Overstreet Hall of Fame. He has lectured at the Library of Congress, exhibited at the Norman Rockwell Museum, and designed for Lady Gaga and ABC’s Beauty and the Beast.
Marc Hempel, “America’s Most Beloved Semi-Obscure Cartoonist”, is celebrated for his work on Gregory, Tug & Buster, and Naked Brain. His diverse projects span Disney Adventures, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, and Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. Hempel’s art has appeared in MAD, Marvel Fanfare, Epic Illustrated, and many more.
Mark Redfield of Mark Redfield Studios is a multifaceted actor, voice actor, author, artist, and filmmaker. He adapted Wheatley’s Frankenstein Mobster for audio drama and has produced numerous audiobooks and films. His latest novel, The Chaney Murder Case, will debut at the convention. Redfield’s works include Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Cold Harbor, and Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
Jennifer Rouse is a composer, sound designer, and voice-over artist with a background in music and acting. She has scored films like The Death of Poe and The Avenging Conscience, and worked on audio dramas including Frankenstein Mobster and Songs of Giants.
Martha Thomases, a New York-based writer, created Dakota North for Marvel and has contributed to publications like the Village Voice, New York Daily News, and High Times. Her upcoming graphic novel, Second-Hand Rose, will be published by A Wave Blue World.
Glenn Hauman of ComicMix is a versatile writer, editor, and designer known for his work on They Keep Killing Glenn. He is also recognized for his contributions to the comics industry and his creative endeavors at ComicMix.

Howard Victor Chaykin is a longtime veteran of the comic book business. As a cartoonist — both writing and drawing — he has been a major influence on the direction of comics, referred to frequently as one of the principal architects of the modern comic book. His signature creation, American Flagg!, introduced a new level of narrative complexity, depth of character, and point of view in its text, not to mention a previously unseen level of design and craft to the visual nature of an all-too-frequently staid and timid medium. Chaykin continues to produce work that pushes the envelope of concept, context, and content in comics…in last year’s The Divided States of Hysteria for example, a comic book which, thanks to social media, enraged an entire new generation of the willfully ignorant who might have had a better case if they’d actually read the damned book. Chaykin’s new series, Hey Kids! Comics!, is a fictionalized history of the comic book business, a love letter written with just a frisson of acid in the ink, to the field he’s loved and called home for over four decades.

His graphic novel series Jon Sable, Freelance was adapted for TV by ABC in 1987. Grell has been voted to Wizard Magazine’s Top Ten List of Comics Writers and was recently named to Wizard World’s Hall of Legends and the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Hall of Fame. It was recently announced that, beginning in 2023, the widely acclaimed Shaman’s Tears will become an “audio movie” podcast on The Fantasy Network, produced in conjunction with Native Voices under the artistic direction of DeLanna Studi out of the Autrey Museum.
In addition to his collaboration with Neil Gaiman on the climactic story arc “The Kindly Ones” in The Sandman, artist and writer Marc Hempel is also known for his critically acclaimed work with Mark Wheatley in the titles Breathtaker, Mars, and Blood of the Innocent. His own creations Gregory and Tug & Buster have been nominated for Harvey and Eisner Awards, and his humor anthology Naked Brain was named Best Comic Book in the Baltimore City Paper’s Best of Baltimore 2003 issue. Hempel’s art has also appeared in Marvel Fanfare, Epic Illustrated, Heavy Metal, Jonny Quest, Tarzan the Warrior, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, Flinch, My Faith in Frankie, The Dreaming, Lucifer, and Disney Adventures. He has created advertising art for print and television, and character design for HBO Animation. More recently, Hempel produced CD art for the Nashville band Swamp Rat, drew an episode of the online strip Munden’s Bar for ComicMix.com, illustrated a 21-page story for Michael Chabon’s The Escapist: Pulse-Pounding Thrills, and has contributed to both MAD Magazine and Nickelodeon Magazine. Marc’s latest work includes a full page comic strip for the lavish hardcover Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream, as well as art for SpongeBob Comics, the Planned Parenthood benefit book Mine!, and Short Things: Tales Inspired by “Who Goes There?” (The Thing) by John W. Campbell, Jr. He is the recipient of the Speakeasy Award and the Inkpot Award. Originally from the Chicago area, Marc currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
Steve Rude’s career began in 1981 with his and co-creator Mike Baron’s groundbreaking Nexus comic series. This space saga catapulted Rude into the field of comics, where he became highly sought after by major publishers. During his first few years in the industry, Rude’s efforts led to numerous awards, such as the 1984 Russ Manning Newcomer Award, the Kirby Award for best artist in 1986, and numerous Eisners for artistic achievement. For over two decades, Rude has drawn hundreds of comic’s greatest iconic heroes, and has galvanized the art world as a comic magazine artist and illustrator.
Currently, Steve and his company, Rude Dude Productions, are bringing the past into the future with comic strips of Nexus and the Moth.
Joe Staton has been drawing comics since he started working for Charlton Comics in 1971, where he co-created E-Man and Michael Mauser. Though the bulk of his work has been for DC Comics, at last count, Staton has worked for at least 30 publishers and 100 different editors. Among his many comics credits are Action Comics, Green Lantern, The Legion, Classics Illustrated, and various incarnations of Batman. During his time on Green Lantern, he co-created several GLs, including Kilowog, Arisia, and Salakk. He also designed GL Guy Gardner’s “bad boy” look. More recently, with his writer-wife Hilarie, he produces medical comics such as Pete Learns All About Crohn’s and Colitis and Amy Goes Gluten-Free. In 1998, he received the Eisner Award for his work on World’s Finest: The Superman-Batman Adventures. He penciled over 100 issues of the Cartoon Network’s Scooby Doo comic. He illustrated a graphic novel adaptation of Ayn Rand’s Anthem for NAL and a graphic biography of Ronald Reagan. Since 2011, working with writer Mike Curtis, Joe has been the regular artist for the long-running Dick Tracy newspaper strip (available online at www.gocomics.com/dicktracy). Dick Tracy received Harvey Awards in 2013, 2014, and 2015 for Best Syndicated Strip or Feature.
Mark Wheatley, Overstreet Hall of Fame inductee, has been awarded the Eisner, Inkpot, Mucker, Gem, Speakeasy, Golden Lion, Robert E. Howard Foundation Outstanding Achievement and nominations for the Harvey and the Ignatz. His work has appeared in Spectrum, the Library of Congress, The Norman Rockwell Museum, and other museums. He has designed for Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, ABC’s Beauty and the Beast, and Square Roots, as well as Super Clyde, The Millers, and 2 Broke Girls on CBS. His most recent print projects include Songs of Giants, Doctor Cthulittle, Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time, Swords Against the Moon Men, The Philip Jose Farmer Centennial Collection, Mine! and Wild Stars. Past creations include Breathtaker, Return of The Human, Ez Street, Lone Justice, Mars, Black Hood, Prince Nightmare, Hammer of The Gods, Blood of The Innocent, Frankenstein Mobster, and Skultar as well as Tarzan, Baron Munchausen, Jonny Quest, Dr. Strange, The Flash, Captain Action, Argus, The Spider, Stargate Atlantis, Torchwood, and Doctor Who.
Among Wheatley’s latest projects, Skultar, has just been announced to start in Dark Horse Presents #7. Written by M.J. Butler, Skultar is a loving (but none-too-kind) send-up of barbarian stories. The Spider: Satan’s Murder Machines collects Norvell Page’s epic crime drama in a deluxe hardcover for the first time with a cover by Wheatley, and The Mark Wheatley Gallery collects a number of the artist’s 2010 13″ x 19″ art prints in book form for the first time.

Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel have been highly successful collaborators, including work on Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg, as well as their recent full restoration of their acclaimed graphic novel Breathtaker, originally serialized and then collected into a best-selling trade paperback by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, which is forthcoming from Titan Comics. Appearing now, McDaniel College in Westminster Maryland serves as premiere host of the Norman Rockwell Museum’s Breathtaker Exhibition, featuring works from acclaimed graphic novel. McDaniel’s Esther Prangley Rice Gallery showcases a large sampling of original works of art. The exhibition runs Monday, Aug. 22-Saturday, Oct. 29 and is free to the public.

Mark Redfield is an actor, writer, producer, director, and artist who has been acting and directing professionally in theater and film since 1981. He is currently developing a new script, revising a novel, recording AudioBooks and AudioDrama, editing a film, and painting new pictures. A cartoonist who also designs sets for television and theater, his new work is shown in galleries, and appears weekly for sale at MarkRedfieldArt.com. His films include indie features such as the award-winning Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2002), Cold Harbor (2003) and The Death of Poe (2006). Making it 22 appearances out of 22 editions of the Baltimore Comic-Con, Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, the masterminds behind Breathtaker, Mars, and numerous other creations, will lead their loose-knit, hard-hitting band of creators under the Insight Studios banner into the Baltimore Convention Center for this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con, Friday-Sunday, October 22-24. At the show, they’ll be joined by acclaimed ComicMix, DC, and First Comics editor Mike Gold, as well as studio mates Glenn Hauman, Martha Thomases, Robert Lemieux, Mark Redfield, and Jennifer Rouse.Tickets are now available.
While frequently noted for their award-winning solo careers, both Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel are often reminded by fans of their success as collaborators. Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Blood of the Innocent, are just a few of their other projects together. Most recently, they have fully restored their acclaimed Vertigo graphic novel Breathtaker for Titan Comics. Additionally, they’ve developed a companion touring show of the original art for the project organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum. Long out of print, it was originally serialized and then collected into a best-selling trade paperback by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint 20 years ago, where it was a best-seller. Their work, both together and separately was extensively profiled in IS Art: The Art of Insight Studios.

Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, whose collaborative and solo careers have ranged from Vertigo’s Breathtaker and First Comics’ Mars to Image’s Frankenstein Mobster and DC’s Gregory, will once again lead a full roster of Insight Studios creators and guests to the Baltimore Comic-Con, October 28-30, 2019 at Booth #118 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Wheatley and Hempel have been highly successful collaborators, including work on Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg, as well as their recent full restoration of their acclaimed graphic novel Breathtaker, originally serialized and then collected into a best-selling trade paperback by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, which is forthcoming from Titan Comics.
This is the twentieth annual Baltimore Comic-Con and this marks Insight Studios Groups’ twentieth consecutive appearance at the show. This time, the talent roster includes writer G. D. On his own, Mark Wheatley has most recently released Songs of Giants, an oversized hardcover featuring his illustrations accompanying the poetry of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, Conan creator Robert E. Howard, and Cthulhu creator H.P. Lovecraft. Prior to its acclaimed debut, Wheatley illustrated and co-developed Doctor Cthulittle with studio mate G. D. Falksen. His other most recent work includes supplying art for prose books, such as the special signed limited edition of Swords Against the Moon Men, the Philip Jose Farmer series novel Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time, and a wide variety new art prints, which he will have for sale at the booth. Over the past few years, his work for CBS Television was featured on The Millers and Super Clyde, while he’s also developed a live stage show featuring Dick Tracy, Tarzan, and the Green Hornet. In print his work has been featured in the acclaimed Jungle Tales Of Tarzan from Dark Horse Comics. With a track record that includes Frankenstein Mobster, Radical Dreamer, Return of the Human, Hammer of the Gods, EZ Street, Skultar, and Lone Justice, Wheatley is an Inkpot, Mucker, Gem, Speakeasy, and Eisner Award-winning creator who has also been inducted into the Overstreet Hall of Fame. He has lectured at the Library of Congress, exhibited at the Norman Rockwell Museum, created set pieces for The Black Eyed Peas, designed for Lady Gaga, and contributed designs to ABC’s Beauty and the Beast.
“America’s Most Beloved Semi-Obscure Cartoonist,” writer-illustrator Marc Hempel, grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and now resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where he plies his craft on such diverse projects ranging from his own Gregory, Tug & Buster, and Naked Brain to Disney Adventures, and from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser to “The Kindly Ones” in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. Hempel’s art has also appeared in MAD, Marvel Fanfare, Epic Illustrated, Heavy Metal, Flinch, My Faith in Frankie, The Dreaming, Lucifer, Munden’s Bar, Nickelodeon Magazine, and a 21-page an Escapist story for Dark Horse Comics. His series The Love Brothers has appeared in Aces Weekly.
G. D. Falksen is an author, lecturer, public speaker, and MC. He also studies history and has consulted for Disney. He is the author of The Ouroboros Cycle series and The Transatlantic Conspiracy, a YA mystery novel from Soho Teen. Other fiction includes “The Strange Case of Mr. Salad Monday,” “Cinema U,” “An Unfortunate Engagement,” and “The Mask of Tezcatlipoca.” He is also a voice actor and co-writer for the animated film Hullabaloo and an accompanying educational series titled Ask The Professor.
Mark Redfield is an actor, writer, producer, director, and artist who has been acting and directing professionally in theater and film since 1981. He is currently developing a new script, revising a novel, recording AudioBooks and AudioDrama, editing a film, and painting new pictures. A cartoonist who also designs sets for television and theater, his new work is shown in galleries, and appears weekly for sale at MarkRedfieldArt.com.
