Black Panther: World of Wakanda Wins a GLAAD Media Award

Black Panther: World of Wakanda has won the GLAAD Media Award for comic books. It was one of ten nominees in the comic category for the 29th annual award. Two other Marvel books, America and Iceman, were also nominated.

The award celebrates inclusivity in pop culture.

Recognized for the book was the creative team of Roxane Gay, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Yona Harvey, Rembert Browne, Alitha E. Martinez, Manny Mederos, Joe Bennett, Afua Richardson, Roberto Poggi, Tamra Bonvillain, Rachelle Rosenberg, Virtual Calligraphy, and Joe Sabino.

Other nominees included the Backstagers, Batwoman, Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love, Goldie Vance, Lumberjanes, The Woods, and Quantum Teens are Go.

Marvel Creates Blue Ear to Help Hearing Impaired Boy

When 4-year old Anthony Smith, a comic book fan, decided he didn’t want to wear his hearing aid anymore because super heroes didn’t wear hearing aids.  His mother turned to Marvel Comics to see if there were indeed super heroes who wore one.  Editors with the company responded pointing out that the Avenger Hawkeye‘s hearing was temporarily destroyed by a sonic arrow.  The even sent a cover to an old comic book which featured Hawkeye wearing a hearing aid.

The letter made it’s way around the Marvel office and inspired production artist Manny Mederos to work on a sketch of a character named The Blue Ear.  That’s what Smith and his mom called his hearing aid.

Mederos eventually sent the family the completely original artwork and the boy has worn his hearing aid since.
