NYCC 2026: Blumhouse partners with IDW Publishing for new IDW Dark comics

Blumhouse is partnering with IDW Publishing to bring even more spine-tingling terror to the comic book horror imprint IDW Dark.

The petrifying partnership tears into comic shops late 2027 with the fan-favorite The Purge. Eisner Award-winning writer Dan Watters and artist Juan José Ryp brings the dystopian and compelling premise – a world in which any and all crime, especially murder, is legal one night a year – to the pages of the comics with a gripping new chapter that features all the action, tension, and emotion that fans crave from the thrilling franchise. Following The Purge will be more unforgettable hits from Blumhouse making their comic book debuts with all-new stories, including M3GAN and New York Times best-selling writer Tim Seeley taking a stab at Happy Death Day.

A darkly comedic slasher with a sci-fi twist, Happy Death Day made an undeniable impact on pop culture with its mystery about a murder victim being forced to relive the day of their death over and over again to discover the shocking truth and unmask their killer.

Happy Death Day was written by Scott Lobdell known for writing numerous comics for Marvel, DC, and more. He generally has left the comic industry and was embroiled in controversy for past behavior and comments. Lobdell wrote the original film script though not its sequel Happy Death Day 2U.

Avatar: The Way of Water tops the weekend box for a seventh week

It’s not too much of a surprise, but Avatar: The Way of Water has once again topped the weekend box office. The movie added $15.7 million to its domestic total to bring it to $620.6 million. Along with its $1.496 billion at the international box office, the film has grossed $2.117 billion worldwide.

The film has yet to crack the top ten of domestic grosses of all time, sitting at number 11. But, with only $3 million to pass The Avengers, it’s sure to do so early on this week. Worldwide, the film sits at #4 and is about $80 million away from passing Titanic. Compared to the original Avatar, the film is running a bit ahead in its domestic gross’ percentage of its overall total, 29.3% compared to 26.9% of the original.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was a repeat in second place with a reported $10.6 million. Its domestic gross now stands at $140.8 million. Internationally, it added about $22.3 million to bring that total to $193.3 million Worldwide, the film has grossed $334.1 million, showing a nice pair of claws as its performed consistently well since its release.

A Man Called Otto moved into third from last week’s fifth adding $6.8 million to its domestic total. It has now grossed $46.1 million. Internationally, it added about $4.9 million over the week to lift that to $24.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just under $71 million.

M3GAN slipped one spot to come in fourth. The film added an estimated $6.4 million to its domestic total to bring that to $82.3 million. Over the week it added $12.4 million to its domestic total to bring that to $63.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $146 million.

Pathaan debuted in fifth place with a little over $5.9 million to bring its domestic total to $8.5 million. No international total has been reported yet.

In comic film news…

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond gained a little over the week, about $88,000, to bring its domestic total to $1.6 million. Internationally, it also added about $100,000 to bring that to $9.7 million. The worldwide total is now a bit over $11.3 million.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever slipped to #17 and grossed $758,000 to bring its domestic total to $453 million. Internationally, the film added about $1 million over the week to bring that to $388.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed over $841.3 million.

Black Adam‘s domestic gross looks like it hasn’t shifted and stands at $168.2 million. Over the week the international remained steady at $224.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just under $393 million.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time looks to have ended its run. Domestically, it has grossed $810,744. Internationally, the film gained a little and is now just under $93 million for a worldwide gross of $93.8 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 60 films earning $72,439,907 from 39,195 theaters. That’s a slight dip from last weekend’s $74,167,639 from 33,384 theaters and 52 films. The average earning was $1,848.19 this past weekend, a drop from the previous weekend’s $2,221.65.

Avatar: The Way of Water again tops the weekend box office as it nears $2 billion

It’s not a surprise that once again, Avatar: The Way of Water topped the weekend box office. The film grossed an estimated $20 million to bring its domestic total to $598.3 million. Over the week, it added about $43 million to its international total. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.972 billion. It’s sure to cross the $2 billion mark any day now.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish improved a slot from last week coming in second. The film added $11.5 million to its domestic total which now stands at $126.5 million. Internationally, it added $29.9 million to bring that total to a little over $171 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $297.5 million.

M3GAN slipped to third with $9.8 million to bring its domestic total to $73.3 million. It also added $17.1 million over the week internationally to bring that to $51.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $124.6 million.

Missing debuted in fourth with $9.3 million domestically. No international total has been reported.

A Man Called Otto rounded out the top five with $9 million to bring its domestic total to $35.3 million. Internationally, it added $5.5 million over the week to bring that total to $20 million and $55.3 million worldwide.

Without much competition, Avatar: The Way of Water again topped the weekend box office for a fifth week in a row. The film grossed an estimated $31.1 million domestically to bring its domestic total to $570.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $140 million over the week to lift that total to $1.331 billion. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.901 billion and is sure to cross the $2 billion mark in the next week or so.

M3GAN was again in second place with an estimated $17.9 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $59.8 million after two weeks. Internationally, the film grossed about $19.4 million over the week to bring that to $34.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just under $94 million.

In third place was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which grossed $13.4 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $110.3 million. Over the week, the film added $31.4 million to its international total to bring that to $141.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $251.3 million.

A Man Called Otto held on to fourth place with $12.6 million and domestically has grossed $21.2 million. $6.1 million got added to the international gross over the week to bring that to $14.5 million giving the film a worldwide gross so far of $35.7 million.

Rounding out the top five was the newcomer Plane which grossed $10 million over the weekend for a total of $11.6 million. No international gross has been reported.

Avatar: The Way of Water repeats for the fourth week as M3GAN has a strong opening

It’s four weeks in a row that Avatar: The Way of Water was the top of the box office. The film grossed an estimated $45 million to bring its domestic total to $516.8 million. Internationally, the film added about $234.4 million to cross the billion dollar mark internationally. There it has grossed $1.191 billion. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.708 billion and it’s almost assured to gross over $2 billion by the time it’s run is over.

M3GAN debuted in second place with $30.2 million domestically. Internationally, the film grossed $14.8 million for a worldwide debut of a little over $45 million.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish slipped to third with an estimated $13.1 million. Domestically, the film has earned $87.7 million. Internationally, the film has grossed about $37 million over the week to bring that to $109.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $197.4 million.

A Man Called Otto expanded its theater count and shot up to fourth place. The film grossed an estimated $4.2 million domestically to bring its total to $4.3 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $8.4 million for a worldwide total of $12.7 million.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever rounded out the top five grossed $3.4 million to bring its domestic total to $445.4 million. Internationally, the film added about $1.2 million over the week to bring that to $381.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $827.2 million.

Black Adam‘s domestic gross ticked up a bit over the week by about $200,000. It now stands at $168.1 million. Over the week the international total also increased a bit, by about $1.4 million, to $224.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $392.9 million.

Numbers have 42 films earning $106,198,898 from 26,677 theaters. That’s a gain from last weekend’s $103,193,592 from 25,490 theaters and 38 films. The average earning was $3,980.92 this past weekend, close to the previous weekend’s $4,048.40.
