Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Savage Avengers #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

A Town Called Terror #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was an intriguing mystery mixed with some horror that wasn’t what we were expecting. We want to see where this goes as a son returns home after his father forces him to.

Break Out #2 (Dark Horse) – The first issue introduced us to a world where mysterious cubes kidnap people under the age of 18 and the group of kids that are going to break those taken out.

Duo #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Milestone’s Earth-M expands with new and original characters and Duo kicks that off!

History Comics: Stonewall Riots (First Second) – A great opportunity and way to learn about this historic and important event.

I Hate This Place #1 (Image Comics) – A mysterious force that attracts ghosts, aliens, and other supernatural beings is in a farm house inherited by two individuals.

Immortal X-Men #2 (Marvel) – The first issue shook up the Quiet Council and we want to see where this series goes to changing the status-quo.

Kaiju Score: Steal from the Gods #2 (AfterShock) – The popcorn heist series continues as a new team must figure out how to steal from a kaiju while also not get killed by a rival gang.

LEGO Ninjago Garmadon #2 (Image Comics/Skybound) – The first issue was fantastic and feels like it captures the “LEGO feel” while not overdoing. Story is first here, it just happens to be in the world of Ninjago!

Life Zero #4 (Ablaze) – Turn your brain off zombie killing action.

Savage Avengers #1 (Marvel) – Conan’s on the run from a Deathlok hunting him down. There’s a Terminator aspect to it all but it’s the team itself, both characters and creative, that has us excited.

Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to Kin #1 (Dark Horse) – Geof Darrow’s latest volume of the popular series. We’re always excited to check out where he takes it and the amazing art.

X-Men Red #2 (Marvel) – How would this series stand out from the other “X” titles? We found out in the first issue which planted a nice flag and teased the direction it was going.

LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #2

Review: LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1

LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1

Growing up I was a huge fan of LEGO. It was my preferred toy as I built worlds and told stories for my own enjoyment. The sets were pretty basic with pirates being the last major expansion before my time of regularly playing with LEGO ended. So, the whole world of Ninjago and LEGO is generally unknown to me. I saw the film so have an idea from that but the specifics are knowledge I don’t have. That has me actually excited to dive into LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1 because not only do I get to find out more but also get to see some of the first steps by Skybound to expand their offerings from the more adult comics they’re known for.

With a story and art by Tri Vuong, LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1 is a really fun and interesting debut. Focused on Garmadon, the comic does an excellent job of catching up readers as to who this character is as it introduces us to the world. Overall, Vuong keeps things rather simple in the story and it works well by doing that. Garmadon is roped in to helping out a village who is terrorized by an evil gang. It’s something we’ve seen many times before but it’s a solid and smart thing to focus on. Vuong uses everything that has come before effectively and in a way that’s not overwhelming for new readers. It’s very new reader friendly in fact.

LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1 is also great for kids and adults alike. It has action and there’s some minor violence but overall it has the style that I’ve come to expect from LEGO entertainment like their movies and video games. There’s a light aspect about it all and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The art by Vuong is interesting. While the characters are clearly LEGO, the overall world doesn’t feel like it leans too heavily in that direction. That’s not a bad thing as it might become overwhelming and get a bit old if overused. It’ll be interesting to see how much that plays into the future and if we’ll see LEGO being built with at some point. The characters are all limited by the design by Vuong uses it all well with solid facial expressions and body movement. Along with Annalisa Leoni on color and lettering by Rus Wooton the comic feels visually perfect for its audience no matter their age.

LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1 has me excited to read more. As a start for Skybound, it’s a fantastic one showing the publisher is able to expand its offerings to all ages, a major move for them. It has me excited for not just the next issue but to see what the publisher has planned next.

Batman Beyond: Neo Year #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alice Ever After #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new take on Alice in Wonderland? Yeah, we’re in.

Batman Beyond: Neo Year #1 (DC Comics) – It’s Terry’s first year without Bruce Wayne brought to us by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and art by Max Dunbar. We’re beyond excited for the combo of creative team and character.

Devil’s Reign #6 (Marvel) – The event wraps up and we have no idea where it’s going from here.

GILT #1 (AHOY Comics) – A time travel urban fantasy. We’re intrigued.

Joneses #1 (AWA Studios) – A suburban family must hide their superpowers from those that fear them.

Lead City #1 (Red 5 Comics) – There’s not enough Western comics, so we’re excited when one debuts.

LEGO Ninjago: Garmadon #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – The toyline comes to Skybound and we’re intrigued to see what the publisher primarily known for adult comics does with the property.

Marauders #1 (Marvel) – Kate Pryde is back with her crew and a refocused mission. With new crewmates, this is an intriguing direction for the series and its brand-new creative team.

The Ocean Will Take Us #1 (AfterShock) – Something’s lurking in the waters of Almanzar Bay – and when Casey March tries out for the swim team, he learns firsthand that messing with the social order of his new high school can have dangerous – even deadly – consequences!

The Rocketeer: The Great Race #1 (IDW Publishing) – This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Rocketeer! Celebrate with a brand new miniseries.

Spider-Punk #1 (Marvel) – The concept is just fun. We’re in for that alone.

Third Wave 99 #2 (Scout Comics) – We thought the series was about surfing culture and clothing but nope, there’s undercover cops and drugs. Not what we expected at all.

West of Sundown #1 (Vault Comics) – A beautiful vampire must flee monster slayers in New York City and reclaim the ancestral soil that restores her undead flesh. But much has changed in the rough frontier town where lots of monsters have settled.

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #2 (DC Comics) – Taking us through the history of the Amazons, the first issue set a high bar with a beautiful and haunting story matched with some of the best art of the year. Here’s hoping the second issue comes close to matching it.

X-Men Red #1 (Marvel) – Get your ass to Mars. With Destiny of X kicking off, the focus shifts to the mutants of Arakko and their growth on Mars.
