Deadpool Smashes Records with $260 million Debut

deadpool posterDeadpool destroyed the competition, as well as a hell of a lot of bad guys, as it debuted to an estimated $135.1 million three day domestic weekend and around $150 to $156 million four day weekend. The film is now the most an R-rated film has debuted as well as a February film. This is also the highest opening for a 20th Century Fox film, the previous being Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The film has the record of largest single day in February, in fact all of its days beat the previous record.

The film also earned $125 million in international markets. The international amount and domestic puts the film at about $260 million for its first weekend, pretty impressive with a budget of about $58 million. We’ll see what lessons Hollywood learns from this. Maybe we’ll see more R-rated superhero films, but most likely the wrong lessons will be taken away.

Three new films didn’t light up the box office. Hail, Caeser! came in second with an estimated $11.4 million. The film has earned mixed reviews, but there’s a fan base for Coen brothers films so it should get above its budget of $22 million. The Choice debuted in fifth earning an estimated $6.1 million, and just behind that in sixth was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which earned an estimated $5.2 million.

The Revenant dropped to third place from last weekend’s second. It earned $7.1 million to bring its domestic total to $149.7 million. In fourth was Star Wars: The Force Awakens which earned $6.89 million.

The film still sits in third in worldwide grosses and is about $178 million short of passing Titanic to move in to second. It has a long way to go to top Avatar to move in first. It’d need $780 million to get to that spot.

Kung Fu Panda 3 Debuts on Top, Crushing the Competition

Kung Fu Panda 3Kung Fu Panda 3 debuted in first place this weekend earning an estimated $41 million. That’s the largest January opening of all-time. Overall, the box office was up compared to last year with holdover films not dropping much from the previous week. In second place was The Revenant which earned an estimated $12.4 million and in third was Star Wars: The Force Awakens which added $10.78 million to its total. Rounding out the top five was Ride Along 2 which earned an estimated $8.3 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to rake in the cash with it crossing the $900 million mark domestically in the next week as well as crossing the $2 billion mark globally in that same time frame. The film is sitting in third in worldwide earnings (not adjusted) and is about $200 million from moving in to second and $800 million from toppling Avatar from the top spot. There’s a good chance it’ll move in to second, but first is quite a march with some tougher competition coming down the road.
