Join KADOKAWA editor Satoshi Arima (The Rising of the Shield Hero, Full Metal Panic!) and debut authors Frettiko & Kazesenken, to learn how English writers can break into the Japanese market through our upcoming contest.

Date: Sunday July 5th, from 1:45 PM – 3:05 PM
Location: Room 403AB

SATOSHI ARIMA

As the current editor-in-chief of KADOKAWA’s MF BOOKS editorial label, Satoshi Arima has worked as an editor of numerous light novel and manga titles, including major anime hits such as “Full Metal Panic!” and “The Rising of the Shield Hero”. In 2025 he launched the “Global UGC Publishing Project”, an outreach to foreign writers aiming to create new hits in both the Japanese and global markets.

FRETTIKO

As the author of “Isekai’d with My Dog, I’m Not the Hero?!”, frettiko is the Grand Prize–winner of the ”MyAnimeList x Honeyfeed Writing Contest 2025 – THE ISEKAI presented by KADOKAWA”. She is currently working with KADOKAWA editors to publish her novel in Japan, with a target release in 2027.

KAZESENKEN

Kazesenken is the author of the Honeyfeed webnovel “Why Kill? When Witches Can Be Tentacled!”. The novel has been picked up for light novel adaptation by KADOKAWA, as part of their global outreach to foreign writers, and he is currently working with KADOKAWA editors towards its scheduled publication in Japan.

Winners Announced for the MyAnimeList x Honeyfeed Writing Contest 2025, with Publication in Japan Confirmed

Kadokawa Corporation, in partnership with qdopp Inc., and MyAnimeList Co., Ltd., co-hosted the MyAnimeList x Honeyfeed Writing Contest 2025 – THE ISEKAI presented by Kadokawa. The English-language isekai fantasy novel contest was held on Honeyfeed, a novel submission platform operated by qdopp, with the goal of discovering exceptional storytelling talent from around the world. The winning works were announced on the contest’s official webpage.

Out of a total of 1,240 entries, one Grand Prize winner and two Contest Winners Prize recipients were selected.

Kadokawa’s first English-language novel contest on Honeyfeed received 1,240 submissions, the highest number in the platform’s contest history. We are deeply honored by this response and delighted to see such strong interest from English-speaking creators in Japan’s light novel market. Following a rigorous selection process, one Grand Prize winner and two Contest Winners Prize recipients were selected. After initial voting by Honeyfeed users and volunteers, the final judging was conducted by Aneko Yusagi (author of The Rising of the Shield Hero) and editors from Kadokawa.

The Grand Prize winner, Isekai’d with My Dog, I’m Not the Hero?!, stood out for its catchy, approachable premise, making it easy to imagine on the shelves of Japanese bookstores. The novel delivers plenty of laugh-out-loud comedic moments, along with charming portrayals of Toast, the adorable dog. We were eager to read more about Toast’s exploits, his bond with the protagonist Mitsuta, and Mitsuta’s growth over the course of the story.

The author, Frettiko, will receive a cash award of USD 5,000. The winning work will also be assigned a Kadokawa editor and is scheduled for translation and publication in Japan, with a target release in 2027.

The first Contest Winners Prize recipient, HR in Another World: Building the Strongest Parties with My Appraisal Skill, made effective use of the appraisal skill trope that has become a staple of the isekai genre, while capturing the distinctive feel of Japanese web novels. At the same time, its expansive setting evoked the scope of a large-scale open-world game. The careful portrayal of each character, along with story developments involving figures whose allegiance
is unclear, added depth and originality to the narrative.

The author, Kaorin, will receive a cash award of USD 3,000. The work will also be assigned a Kadokawa editor and revised with the aim of translation and publication in Japan.

The second Contest Winners Prize recipient, Drinking Buddies: Hangover in Another World, is a lighthearted comedy that keeps the pages turning. Its one-of-a-kind tone, blending concepts like “beer magic” with a chunibyo-style demonic arm, creates a brand of absurd humor that is strangely compelling. The two protagonists, Marcus and Gus, drinking buddies from our world, are character types rarely seen in Japanese fiction and are likely to feel fresh and distinctive to Japanese readers.

The author, Literate_Manul, will receive a cash award of USD 3,000. The work will also be assigned a Kadokawa editor and revised with the aim of translation and publication in Japan.

Going forward, Kadokawa plans to continue hosting web novel contests in Japan and abroad to discover talented writers from around the world who share a passion for Japanese entertainment content.

“Isekai’d with my dog, I’m not the hero?!”

by Frettiko

An average guy named Mitsuta is reincarnated into another world along with his pet dog, Toast.

However, the goddess becomes utterly smitten with the adorable Toast and grants all of the hero’s bonuses to him instead. For a level 99 “Hero” Pomeranian, defeating monsters is a walk in the park. Meanwhile, his owner Mitsuta remains stuck at level 1… Constantly dragged along by the free-spirited Toast, Mitsuta gathers a group of quirky companions and runs an odd-jobs business, gradually carving out a place for himself in this new world. At this rate, they might even end up defeating the Demon King someday? A fluffy, feel-good comedy about a fun-filled isekai life with a beloved pet.

Anime Expo 2023: Delicious in Dungeon Anime to Stream Worldwide on Netflix

On July 1st, 2023 KADOKAWA Corporation announced during the TRIGGER World Premiere at Anime Expo 2023 that the upcoming January 2024 anime, Delicious in Dungeon will stream on Netflix worldwide after its release.

Ahead of its premiere, a special Delicious in Dungeon exhibit is being featured at the KADOKAWA booth (South Hall 1206) at Anime Expo 2023. Kentaro Kumagai, the voice of Laios, and Sayaka Sembongi, the voice of Marcille, are also attending Anime Expo 2023 as special guests from Japan.

The anime adaptation of the popular Japanese manga Delicious in Dungeon (Japanese: ダンジ ョン飯 / Hepburn: Danjon Meshi / lit. “Dungeon Meal”), written and illustrated by Ryoko Kui, has been highly anticipated ever since its track record of selling more than 8.5 million copies in Japan. In North America, the manga series is licensed by Yen Press and has been translated up to Volume 12 in English (as of June 2023).

When young adventurer Laios and his company are attacked and soundly thrashed by a dragon deep in a dungeon, the party loses all its money and provisions…and a member! They’re eager to go back and save her, but there is just one problem: If they set out with no food or coin to speak of, they’re sure to starve on the way! But Laios comes up with a brilliant idea: “Let’s eat the monsters!”

Slimes, basilisks, and even dragons…none are safe from the appetites of these dungeon-crawling gourmands!

I can’t wait to see your works, brimming with enthusiasm and interesting ideas.

Mine Yoshizaki (Manga artist. Representative works: Sgt. Frog.)

As various cultures develop and evolve, the “manga” we know today will also change.

I participated in this event because I found it to be a valuable opportunity to study a new form of “manga” that has evolved to meet the needs of the current era.

I look forward to seeing new forms of expression made possible through the TATESC comics format.

Kadokawa and Yen Press Announce the Simultaneous Publication of an Original Dark Souls Novel!

FromSoftware returns to its epic roots with a new novel set in the world of Dark Souls, widely considered one of the best video games ever made.  Penned by bestselling author Michael A. StackpoleDark Souls: Masque of Vindication expands the mythos of the game and gives the millions of devoted fans who made the franchise a phenomenon an opportunity to revisit the epic adventure and settings that captured their imagination through fresh eyes.

In an underground tomb, a man who should have been dead awakens in the dark, gradually regaining his senses—

He has forgotten his past, including his name. Given the great pains taken to insure his confinement, his revival may have been anticipated, but the remains of the grave robber that is his sole companion may give a clue as to his reawakening. When the corpse of the thief rises against him, a sorcerer’s instincts emerge, and he puts it down with a flash of light from his palm. With this gesture, the memories of the cadaver flicker through him, rekindling a sense of himself…

The desert night stretches out beyond the graveyard, and the starry sky tells the sorcerer that a long time has passed since his death. Naming himself Ferranos after the meaningless word graven outside his tomb and armed with a dagger of a failed grave robber, he embarks on an epic adventure guided by fate.

Dark Souls: Masque of Vindication will be published globally both in print and digitally on October 25, 2022 by Kadokawa Corporation in Japanese and by Yen Press in English, marking the first simultaneous print release between the two companies.
