DSTLRY reveals covers for Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s The Blood Brothers Mother

DSTLRY has debuted new variant covers for The Blood Brothers Mother #1, the kickoff of a biting western tale of revenge by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning creative team behind Vertigo crime classic 100 Bullets.

Legendary creative team Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, and editor Will Dennis return with a carnage-filled western saga, bringing their honed characters, dialogue, and textured illustration to a genre steeped in American iconography and bloodshed.

The Blood Brothers Mother follows three children—their step-father gunned down by their recently paroled father; their mother kidnapped; their family torn asunder. The kids set off to rescue her across the wild Texas frontier, where they’ll face the harsh elements of an unforgiving landscape, deadly animals hungry for blood, merciless bounty hunters, and so much more.

Along the way, they’ll learn the real cost of revenge—not just in lives, but in how it stains a soul. While revenge may be satisfying in the moment, it leaves a yearning behind that lasts a lifetime. And once you taste it, nothing else is ever so sweet.

The creator-owned western launches this May as the esteemed duo seek vengeance with a pair of open order covers by Risso and new incentive variants by Rafael AlbuquerqueHoward Chaykin, and Junko Mizuno, all of which will also be available as variants for the digital release on dstlry.co:

DSTLRY’s The Devil’s Cut Sells 50,000+ Units to retailers

The Devil's Cut

DSTLRY has revealed that its debut publication, the 88-page $9.99 short story collection The Devil’s Cut, netted orders exceeding 50,000 from comic book stores. These orders secured The Devil’s Cut as one of the most successful independent comics, let alone oversized anthologies, published in the past decade.

Contributing to the success is the fact that The Devil’s Cut is fully returnable, never to be reprinted in this format again, and 8 of the 11 stories will continue as a series in the fall of 2023 and throughout 2024. That means retailers were more than likely to increase orders, especially to take advantage of variant covers that required certain ordering thresholds. The issue is also a “key’ in that it’ll debut at least 8 new series. All of that increased sales by decreasing risk and increasing the collectability.

According to direct market sales data available via Comichron.com, The Devil’s Cut would have been the 13th highest-grossing independent comics of 2021 and 4th top-grossing independent comic of 2019. If categorized as a graphic novel, DSTLRY’s debut would be 5th top-grossing independent graphic novel of 2021, and the number 1 top-grossing independent graphic novel of 2019. Indexing of sales data stopped in mid 2020 and 2022, so there are no available rankings for these years.

Former comiXology execs David Steinberger and Chip Mosher launch DSTLRY, a “next gen” comic publisher

DSTLRY

ComiXology co-founder and former CEO David Steinberger and former comiXology Head of Content Chip Mosher unveiled today DSTLRY. DSTLRY is “a next-generation comics publisher that redefines creator-owned comic books and collectibles.” The publisher will offer customers limited physical and digital item drops, available online or in-store at local comic shops, while providing creators with fairer deals alongside company ownership. The co-founders have been working on the project in stealth mode since departing comiXology/Amazon in summer 2022.

DSTLRY’s investors include international publishing giants Kodansha USA and Groupe Delcourt, as well as video game luminary John Schappert, tech strategist Mike Vorhaus, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura—the last three make up DSTLRY’s Advisory Board. The focus is on premium content, hassle-free digital collectibles, and a more equitable comics industry.

Chip Mosher and David Steinberger by Tula Lotay

DSTLRY’s Founding Creators include renowned writers and artists such as Scott Snyder, Tula Lotay, James Tynion IV, Junko Mizuno, Ram V, Mirka Andolfo, Joëlle Jones, Jock, Becky Cloonan, Brian Azzarello, Elsa Charretier, Stephanie Phillips, Lee Garbett, Marc Bernardin, Jamie McKelvie, and Founding Editor Will Dennis, with more Founding Creators, creative teams, and a publishing rollout to be announced later this year.

Each Founding Creator holds an equity stake in the company, and DSTLRY has set aside an additional 3% of company equity to be distributed among all creators who release projects during the first three years of DSTLRY’s publishing slate; allocation will be based on title performance. This innovative structure aligns DSTLRY with the comic creators, whose creations dominate the pop culture landscape but are too often under-recognized and under-compensated.

DSTLRY’s oversized, premium-format single-issues will be available in print at local comic shops while digital single-issues will be available for purchase for up to one week after release on dstlry.co. These eco-friendly digital issues will be fully owned and resellable on DSTLRY’s marketplace—a “Stub Hub for digital comics”—with benefits like special discounts, exclusive drops, and meetups with the creators, depending on the item. Collected editions of single-issue comics in both print and digital formats will be widely available.

Digital owners can resell their items on the DSTLRY marketplace at a price of their choosing, with a percentage of resale going back to the creators, while each physical issue will be a limited-edition premium collectible fans will love to read and collect. More details about these physical and digital collectibles will be announced later.

Kidrobot reveals a Witch Queen 8″ resin figure by Junko Mizuno

Is she a powerful, outspoken, ahead-of-her-time woman who has been jealously labeled a witch, or is she really a witch?

Why not both?

This evocative resin sculpture by famed artist Junko Mizuno emanates a casual power and a chilling disregard for your categories. Hearts ignite and bloom pale green fire in her grasp… once they have been removed from their previous homes. Crowned in flowers and horns, she gazes past questions of good versus evil and sees her own reality.

Junko Mizuno is a self-taught artist from Tokyo who is recognized for her unique visual iconography of powerful and often sexy women. Although her art refuses to be categorized, much of it is based on Japanese pop culture from ‘70s and ‘80s with the sources of her inspiration stemming from fetish art, folk art, religious art, psychedelic art, pin-up art, advertising art, vintage toys, fashion, comic, food, nature, movies, TV shows, video games… almost everything that surrounds her. Currently residing in San Francisco, she is constantly working on new comics, paintings, illustrations, and product designs ranging from toy figures to T-shirts. Her work has been featured in stores, museums, and fine art galleries around the world. Motivated by the pure pleasure of creating art, she celebrates the power of women and creates a universe of them, full of energy, both positive and negative.

Kidrobot and Junko Mizuno have worked on many projects over the last decade, including custom art pieces and numerous Dunny projects. Highlights include the Violet Soda Lady 8″ Dunny, several editions of the La Flamme 8″ Dunny, a 3” figure in the Dunny Fatale series, and the Black Kuro Megami Figure.
