Spider-Man and Iron Man Team Up in Iron Man #6

Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero’s new run of Iron Man debuted last month and will return next month with a much-demanded second printing. Fans can peek ahead with the reveal of issue six, on sale in May. Featuring art by guest artist Juann Cabal, the issue will guest star Spider-Man and Norman Osborn.

Praised for delivering a back-to-basics approach while also planting seeds for a riveting future, Iron Man #1 ended with a startling cliffhanger. As Tony raced to confront A.I.M. for stolen tech, Captain America hosted an eclectic group, warning them to keep a watchful eye on Tony’s recent actions. Among the familiar faces were fellow heroes like Captain Marvel, lifelong best friends like War Machine, and former adversary Norman Osborn!

Norman and Tony’s bitter rivalry defined Marvel’s “Dark Reign” era, where Norman led the Dark Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. as Iron Patriot. Now, he struggles to find redemption in the pages of Joe Kelly, John Romita Jr., and Pepe Larraz’s Amazing Spider-Man. Can Spider-Man prevent Norman’s old feud from resurfacing or will Tony cause Norman to prematurely slip back to his old ways? In addition to Ryan Stegman’s main cover, IRON MAN #6 will feature stunning variant covers, including a special foil cover by Salvador Larroca, an homage to Larroca’s Invincible Iron Man (2008) #7 cover during his run on the title with Matt Fraction, and the latest in Todd Nauck’s “Ironic” series spotlighting the Iron Patriot armor, which makes a comeback in the story.

SPIDER-MAN MUST SAVE NORMAN OSBORN… FROM IRON MAN?!

Tony Stark and Norman Osborn have history. They’ve known each other longer than you might know. And when the Iron Patriot armor is stolen, all signs point toward the former Green Goblin. Only problem is Iron Man has just one, little, tiny thing standing in his way to take down Norman: the AMAZING, SPECTACULAR, FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN!

Check out the new Iron Man #6 covers from Ryan Stegman, Salvador Larroca, and Todd Nauck and add the series to your pull list at your local comic shop today!

DC K.O. #4 has what we’ve been waiting for, the Contestants vs. Absolute Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman

DC K.O. #4

Three mysterious new Omega-charged fighters have entered the tour nament…and this trinity of the Absolute will change the face of the DCU forever! It’s all down to how far the final four are willing to go to win in the penultimate chapter of DC K.O.! Plus: Booster’s true allegiance revealed, Darkseid’s return foretold, and a bonkers last page that will bring the battle to the next level! DC K.O. #4 delivers what readers have been waiting for since the beginning of this event.

When DC K.O. debuted, it teased an eventual showdown between Absolute Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, and the contestants. Issue after issue, it’s a thread that has been absent from the story, until now. But, why is this trio on the side of Darkseid? Who will win? DC K.O. #4 delivers all of that and more as the event begins to wind down towards the final battle.

Written by Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson, DC K.O. #4 is a fun issue that sort of sticks to the formula of new level and boss battle. And that formula has generally worked delivering an event that feels epic and popcorn fun rolled into one. Four contestants remain as Superman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, and Joker have to face off with a Booster Gold infused Darkseid and his trio of warriors and the battle is entertaining. Yes, the comic sticks to the formula of heroes battling it out before teaming up, but it gives good reason as to the motivations and causes of all of this. There’s also enough twists and turns to keep readers on their toes.

The art by Javi Fernandez and Xermanico continues the bombastic style of the series that feels like Capcom making a new brawler featuring just DC characters. They’re joined by Alejandro Sanchez on color and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. The art is entertaining and the battles feel fierce and epic as expected. What’s particularly great is the overall ominous feel of Darkseid’s forces and the flashback where we get to see how his warriors were recruited is fantastic with some great page layouts. There’s some small quibbles like the size of Absolute Batman that grows (can easily be explained by Omega energy) but his height doesn’t line up with what we’ve seen in the recent Absolute Batman/Wonder Woman crossover.

DC K.O. #4 doesn’t break any ground but it’s a fun blockbuster. There’s a lot going on and it does a solid job of telling and showing the why and how of it all while delivering punches. The issue has some solid surprises as well that adds to the enjoyment and “comic book” feel of it all. DC and its team have put together an event that’s a summer blockbuster on the printed page that delivers crazy concepts and great visuals that allow you to sit back and just enjoy.

FOR BATMAN TO WIN, DOES DAMIAN HAVE TO LOSE? Bruce Wayne became Batman to strike terror into the hearts of criminals, but he never imagined a world where Gotham City would be so safe it no longer needs its Caped Crusader. But when he arrives in a Gotham where Damian achieved that very peace, will Bruce destroy everything his son has built to overcome the Heart of Apokolips’s test and re-enter the K.O. tournament?

Iron Man #1 Delivers an Entertaining Though Forgettable Debut

Iron Man #1

The unapologetic Iron Man is a once-in-a-lifetime hero – but the beating heart behind the armor is a once-in-a-century genius. Years ago, Tony Stark was knocking on death’s door, so he created the Iron Man armor to survive! What happens the next time death comes calling? What weapon does he create then? What if…someone else creates it first? These questions have haunted Tony for years, a ticking time bomb inside of him waiting to explode. Femme fatale Madame Masque has also asked these questions, and with the power of Advanced Idea Mechanics behind her…she’s ready to create the next great weapon. Iron Man #1 kicks off a new volume for the classic character but overall doesn’t surprise and excite.

I really enjoy Joshua Williamson‘s work. Birthright, Nailbiter, Dark Ride, G.I. JOE, his work for DC, it’s all been solid rides that hooked me from the beginning. So, his attachment to Iron Man had me excited for a character who I have had low interest in. Finishing Iron Man #1… that interest remains low.

The start of the new volume has Stark celebrating an award for an individual who’s part of a “smart people incubator” he’s put together. Of course, when it comes to needing smart people, A.I.M. has interest which leads to a clash between Tony/Iron Man and Madam Masque and A.I.M. Masque has had an increased profile lately in the Marvel Universe clearly with something on the horizon to make her more of a player.

The comic has Tony being his usual mix of smarts, slightly aloof, and flirtatious with action that overall is entertaining but doesn’t feel so much as a debut as it does the start of a new arc for a series post event and well into its run. In other words, it might get some new readers but also not really memorable. It doesn’t stand out. But, Williamson delivers some potential with an ending that might echo back a bit and tying into some foreshadowing earlier in the comic.

The art by Carmen Carnero is just ok. With color by Nolan Woodard and lettering by Joe Caramagna, it does what it needs to do but much like the story itself, doesn’t really stand out from the pack. It’s perfectly fine but Tony doesn’t look quite right and while the action is entertaining, it also lacks that slight punch you want in a debut issue.

Iron Man #1 isn’t bad. But, it also doesn’t excite enough to match what we know Williamson can do or a debut issue. It saves its big idea until the end and the lead up to that feels like an arc for a series that’s been around for years. This is one for the diehard Tony Stark and Iron Man fans and here’s hoping Williamson’s overall plans are a bit more exciting than this.
