Joel Adams, Tula Lotay, Joe Pruett, Don Rosa, Don Simpson, and Ron Wilson are coming to Baltimore Comic Con

Joel Adams is the eldest son of famed comic book legend Neal Adams. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York, in 1988, and moved to Los Angeles to work at Neal’s west coast offices of Continuity Studios. While at Continuity, he dabbled in comic books, helping out on Continuity titles such as Ms. Mystic and Bucky O’Hare. Outside of Continuity, he did covers for Alpha Productions’ Blood Thirst and penciled for Penthouse Comix’ Young Captain Adventure.

In 1996, Joel went to Marvel Animation to do all the character design for The Hulk animated series. From there, he went to FOX/Film Roman to design the Emmy Award-winning King of the Hill, then to FOX Family to design Nascar Racers.

While working for animation companies, Joel was picked up for all of the licensing art for these shows and others by the licensing companies handling them. Joel’s art has appeared on products from The Hulk, Nascar Racers, King of the Hill, Captain Scarlet, The Mask (animation), Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, Power Rangers: Light Speed Rescue, Power Rangers: Wild Force, Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire, and more. 

Tula Lotay is the pen name of illustrator Lisa Wood. Born and raised in Yorkshire, England, Tula specializes in comics, film, and editorial illustration, as well as being the founder and former director of the world-renowned Thought Bubble Festival.

Tula is best known for her interior work on Bodies, All-Star Batman, Supreme Blue Rose, and Scarlet Witch. She is also a prolific and accomplished cover artist, working regularly for Marvel, DC, Image, and BOOM! Studios, along with being a regular contributor on the fronts of such series as Catwoman, The Walking Dead, Faithless, and Bloodshot Reborn. Outside of comics, Lotay is a mainstay in the alternative film poster scene, contributing art to officially licensed projects such as Marvel Studio’s Black Widow, The Handmaiden, Personal Shopper, The Last of Us, and many others.

In 2015 she was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for The Wicked and The Divine #13. This was followed up with more accolades when Tula was awarded the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award by the San Diego Comic-Con Eisner committee for her charitable and fundraising work in 2019. Her biggest accomplishment yet came once again at SDCC, when, in 2023, she won an Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic for Barnstormers with Scott Snyder and Comixology. She followed that up in 2024 with an Eisner Award for Best New Series for SOMNA.

SOMNA was her first completed book as a DSTLRY founding member and was both written and drawn collaboratively with creator Becky Cloonan. Her next project is Groupies, back at Comixology with writer Helen Mullane.

Joe Pruett is an Eisner Award-winning comic book editor and writer. Joe has also written for virtually every major comic publisher, including Image, Vertigo, IDW, DC, AfterShock, Caliber, and Marvel, where he wrote for the X-Men family of titles. He also served as Publisher at Desperado Publishing and AfterShock Comics, as well as Editor-in-Chief of Ninth Circle Comics. His most recent writing credits include Viking Moon, Kilroy Is Here, and Voices In My Head at Image, Savage Sword of Conan, and BOOM! Studios’ Hello, Darkness. His French graphic album, The Territory with artist Philippe Xavier, will be published by Le Lombard this fall. Recently, he has started Desperado Books, where has edited, designed, and published retrospective art books, The Book of Jusko and The Book of Deodato, and relaunched his classic anthology Negative Burn.

Well known in American comics fandom since the 1960s for his vast comic book collection and comics fanzine activities, Don Rosa became internationally famous starting in 1987 when he began writing and drawing Uncle $crooge and Donald Duck comics for various licensed publishers in Europe. Just as they once were in America, Donald Duck comics (based on Carl Barks’ work) continue to be the best selling comics in Europe and South America where the weekly (!) Donald Duck comics have been read by hundreds of millions of fans for over 70 years. This makes Rosa one of the world’s best known cartoonists, but still very easy to visit with at American shows where he can relax in “relative obscurity”. American comics fans are mostly familiar with his most famous work, the Eisner Award winning Life and Times of $crooge McDuck series. But American fans can also now see his entire Duck comics career reprinted chronologically in the new Don Rosa Library from Fantagraphics. Rosa has quit producing new Duck comics due to several reasons, but he stays very busy with signing tours to Europe, visits to American comic cons, and his many hobbies, including growing exotic chiles, of which he is even now probably giving away bags in the convention hall.

Megaton Man #1 detonated on the scene in December 1984, and forty years later, Don Simpson is still best known as the creator of that satirical superhero series published by Kitchen Sink Press and Image Comics. Don is also creator of the science fiction saga Border Worlds (collected by Dover in 2017), Bizarre Heroes, a universe of characters surrounding the cast of Megaton Man and self-published under Don’s Fiasco Comics imprint, and Marvel’s one-shot CRAZY! reboot (2019). A veteran of the 80s-90s indy movement, Don worked for every major comic book imprint in the late twentieth century, including Mirage Studios (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Image Comics (Splitting Image, The Savage Dragon vs. Megaton Man, The normalman-Megaton Man Special, 1963), Fantagraphics (King Kong), and DC (Wasteland, Flash Annual, Secret Origins, Action Comics Weekly). More recently, Don has been authoring his weekly prose novel, The Ms. Megaton Man Maxi-Series, and teamed up with William Messner Loebs, Jason Moore, and Tom Orzechowski on Victory Folks—The Golden Age Public Domain Supergroup. 2025 saw the release of The Complete Megaton Man Universe Volume I: The 1980s (Fantagraphics Underground), including all the Kitchen Sink Press Megaton Man comics, and Megaton Man: Multimensions (Cosmic Lion Productions), an anthology of indy creators’ interpretations of and IP crossovers with Don’s creations.

Ron Wilson started drawing at Marvel Comics in 1974, working under the tutelage of John Romita Sr. During his tenure, he has drawn 101 Marvel covers, worked on 8-page mystery stories, and illustrated for Captain Britain, Power Man, The Incredible Hulk Magazine, Marvel Two-in-One, The Thing, and He-Man: Masters of the Universe. He is currently working on the Super Boxers 2 graphic novel, a prequel to the first edition of Super Boxers.

Baltimore Comic-Con has announced the addition of Arthur Adams, Viktor Farro, Nikkol Jelenic, Justin Mason, Joe Pruett, and Peter Tomasi to the 2025 event. Get your tickets now online!

Arthur Adams is an award-winning artist who became an immediate fan favorite as the penciler on the critically-acclaimed 1985 Longshot mini-series. His decades-spanning career has included cover and interior work on such titles as Batman, Superman, The Hulk, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, X-Men, New Mutants, Godzilla, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Excalibur, Ultimate X, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Walking Dead. He’s the creator, writer and artist on Monkeyman and O’Brien.

Outside of comics, Arthur has done movie, toy, and game designs, book illustrations, and provided the artwork for an X-Men themed Spaghetti-O’s can.

Viktor Farro studied editorial illustration at the 2019 Illustration Academy in Kansas City and its Visual Arts Passage online program from 2020-2023. Through those two programs, he had the privilege of studying under Mark English, John English, Sterling Hundley, Gary Kelley, Edward Kinsella III, George Pratt, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Dale Stephanos, among others.

He also studied constructive anatomy in a year-long program with Steve Huston through his realist artist program, Draws From Life.

Farro’s work has been recognized nationally by 3×3, Creative Quarterly Journal, and selected for American Illustration AI42, 3×3 International Illustration Annual 20, and the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles’ Illustration West 62.

His clients include Marvel SNAP, OverPower card game, Image Comics, Mad Cave Studios, Massive Publishing, Skybound Entertainment, UDON Publishing, among others.

Nikkol Jelenic is an American artist who has painted and penciled comic book covers and pages, music albums, and game design art.

Nikkol painted the cover art for Dynamite Entertainment’s Red Sonja vs. The Army Of Darkness series and is also a recent featured interior artist on the horror anthology The Haunted Box from Iron Age Comics as well as a frequent cover artist for Darby Pop Publishing’s Side-Kicked series.

After working for AfterShock Comics as a sequential artist for After Dark, she co-created a graphic novel titled Midnight Rose with Jim Starlin, also published by AfterShock. Jelenic will be teaming up with Starlin again, featured as a penciler on his legendary creator-owned title Dreadstar in an upcoming anthology for the eponymous character.

Jelenic has wrapped up her creator-owned title A Taste For Killing horror comic collection, taking place in the ACID i COMICS universe, with her killer clown tale “Chuckles Knuckles-Hook.”

Her past works include Red Sonja vs. The Army Of Darkness, The Uncanny X-Men 100 Project, A Taste For Killing, Midnight Rose, After Dark, Side-Kicked, The Haunted Box, The Women of Darby Pop, and various indie titles.

Justin Mason is currently known for his work on Spider-Punk and its sequel series, Spider-Punk: Arms Race. His other credits include Star Wars, Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis, Death of the Venomverse, and Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood. He lives in the backwoods of Corbin, Kentucky with his wife and kids.

Peter J. Tomasi, recipient of the 2018 Inkpot Award for achievement in comics, is a New York Times best-selling author known not only for his writing on Superman, Batman and Robin, Super Sons, Green Lantern Corps, Batman-Detective Comics, and many more, but also as an award-winning group editor at DC Comics for 15 years where he ushered in new eras for Batman, Justice Society of America, Green Lantern, and the best-seller, Kingdom Come. 

Tomasi is also the author of House of Penance, nominated for best graphic novel at 2018 Angouleme International Comic Festival, Light Brigade, The Mighty, Blood Tree, and the critically-acclaimed graphic novel The Bridge: The Building of the Brooklyn Bridge published by Abrams ComicArts. Tomasi also wrote the screenplay for the popular animated film Death of Superman, and his screenplay for The Bridge was on The Black List as one of the best unproduced Hollywood scripts of that year.

Garth Ennis, Ram V, Marguerite Bennett, Joe Pruett and Adam Glass launch a new comic publisher, Ninth Circle

The comic book industry is igniting with the launch of Ninth Circle, a new publishing company co-founded by veteran writer Garth Ennis, Marguerite Bennett, Joe Pruett, Ram V, and Adam Glass. Rounding out the rest of the founders include strategic advisor and founder Michael Bogner, and company representative David Stone. Ninth Circle’s lead investor is Kimberly Steward, and her production company K Period Media will partner with Ninth Circle to produce select titles.

Ninth Circle is launching as an imprint at Image Comics.

Taking inspiration from Dante, who created nine circles of Hell in Inferno, Ninth Circle is set to redefine genre storytelling by combining the visionary creativity and expertise of these incredibly talented storytellers. No capes, no tights, and no romance (unless, of course, that romance includes murder, blood, and mayhem).

In the spirit of the horror books, TV, and films we grew up with and loved, from comic books like Eerie and The Vault of Horror, to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the novels of the legendary Stephen King, through the Hammer films, Alien, and the iconic Universal Monsters, Ninth Circle will bring cutting edge, terrifying stories to the insatiable fans of horror. The new publisher promises to deliver intensely creative books that explore all of the dark avenues of the horror genre, including the paranormal and demonic, slashers, creatures, psychological, and even a dash of comedy, all coming straight to readers from the deepest depths of Hell. 

Ninth Circle’s debut title, Freddie the Fix by Garth Ennis, is a darkly humorous and horrific series that follows Freddie, a fixer who cleans up the messes left behind by the monstrous stars of Hollywood: werewolves, vampires, zombies, aliens, bogeymen, predators, and…things. They all have their vices, they all get in deep trouble. Enter Freddie…to fix it. Illustrated by artist Mike Perkins and featuring Ennis’s signature gritty storytelling, biting wit, and reverence for genre, Freddie the Fix is an unforgettable addition to the world of graphic storytelling. Freddie the Fix will hit shelves December 11 at comic stores nationwide and digitally through major platforms.

Ninth Circle prioritizes quality over quantity. Starting in December with Freddie the Fix, the publisher will deliver beautifully printed double-shot books each month. Each issue contains a stand-alone tale of terror with a beginning, middle, and end. As a company founded by artists for artists, Ninth Circle intends to be a home (or perhaps haunted house) for all artists; a creative hub where established and up-and-coming writers and artists can probe their imagination to deliver new, exciting, and terrifying narratives to audiences.  

Ninth Circle has already planned the release of more terrifying comics including works by Marguerite Bennett, illustrated by 2024 Eisner Hall of Fame inductee Jill Thompson, a tale by Joe Pruett, illustrated by Butch Guice, and a story by Adam Glass, illustrated by Bernard Chang. More titles from Garth Ennis, Ram V, and many others are already slated to drop in 2025, solidifying the publisher’s position as a key player in the horror genre.

Cully Hamner has drawn many things for many publishers, but he’s probably best known for co-creating Jaime Reyes (DC Comics’ current Blue Beetle, recently adapted into a Warner Bros. feature film); his creator-owned comic Red (also adapted as a pair of hit Bruce Willis films); and a list of credits at DC about as long as your leg — most recently as cover artist on numerous titles across the Batman and Superman lines, as well as the new Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, and interiors on books like Detective Comics, Superman Red & Blue, and Blue and Gold. At Marvel, he’s provided a ton of covers for the Spider-Man titles, Black Panther vs. Deadpool, War of the Realms, Yondu, M.O.D.O.K., Planet of the Apes, Aliens, and the Joe Fixit series. Also coming up are covers for BOOM!, AWA, Tiny Onion, Mad Cave, and many other publishers. His next major projects are Ruby Actual with Greg Rucka at Image Comics and as regular cover artist on DC’s new JSA series by Jeff Lemire and Diego Olortegui.

Nikkol Jelenic is an American horror illustrator, comic book creator, and cover artist. While creating fantastic and gory tales for her own comics and freelancing pin ups and painted canvas works, she continues collaborating with other independent authors and artists that share the same genre interests.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson broke into comics in 2015 with the BOOM! Studios miniseries Last Sons of America and Warlords of Appalachia, leading him to DC Comics and Marvel, where he is best known for his acclaimed work on Superman and Action Comics, Marvel’s Alien series, Green Lantern: War Journal, and his current fan-favorite run on The Incredible Hulk. He has also written such characters/titles as Aquaman, Captain America, Marvel Zombies: Resurrection, Extreme Carnage, and his creator-owned series The Fellspyre Chronicles at DC Black Label and Crocodile Black at BOOM! Studios. Johnson has also been published with Archaia, IDW, Aftershock, Dynamite, and Scout Comics.

You may remember Jeff McClelland from that one time you were in the grocery store, and you were checking out with a lot of items, and you heard the one guy behind you in line (with only a few items in his cart) sigh audibly in a way that seemed intentional. That was Jeff, and he does not apologize for it. Jeff has worked as a writer, editor, letterer, and designer on books like The Tick (New England Comics), the Eisner-nominated The Illustrated Al: The Songs of “Weird Al” Yankovic (Z2 Comics), Sister Powers (Keenspot Entertainment), the New York Times bestselling FUBAR series (FUBAR Press), the award-winning Flutter Collection (Dark Horse Comics), and his self-published Planet Comics anthology. Ian Chase Nichols is a comic book artist, creator, writer, and designer. A noted comic book editor, publisher, and writer covering over three decades, Joe Pruett has been nominated for numerous Eisner, Harvey, and Eagle awards. He is also known for the anthology series Negative Burn and his work at Marvel, where he wrote various X-Men family titles. Most recently, Joe has been the Publisher/COO of AfterShock Comics and writer of the Black-Eyed Kids horror series.

Peter Rostovsky is a Russian-born artist and writer who emigrated from the former Soviet Union as a political refugee in 1980. His paintings and fine art have been shown widely in the US and abroad and exhibited at museum venues such as PS1/MoMA, The Walker Art Center, MCA Santa Barbara, Artpace, The Blanton Museum of Art, S.M.A.K. Ghent, as well as a host of private galleries. His writing — often under the pen name David Geers — has appeared in the magazines October, Fillip, BOMB, The Third Rail Quarterly, The Brooklyn Rail, Unbag, and Frieze, and spans cultural criticism, art writing, and fiction. Meanwhile, his illustrated fiction and comics-based work has appeared in the Third Rail Quarterly, Unbag, Topic, in Devil’s Due’s much publicized Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force and Talk Bernie to Me anthologies, as well as the Ringo Award-nominated Pandemix anthology. Rostovsky teaches at NYU, Parsons New School, and Lesley Art + Design. His debut graphic novel, Damnation Diaries, was released with Uncivilized Books in June 2023.

Next week is Baltimore Comic Con, September 8-10, 2023 at the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center. The Baltimore Comic Con has announced the addition of comic guests Jerome Gagnon, Heather and Travis Gibb, David Mack, Patrick McDonnell, Joe Pruett, Evan “Doc” Shaner, Scott Snyder, Jim Starlin, and Sean Von Gorman at the 2023 event. Online tickets are available now so you can avoid waiting in additional lines upon arrival!

Jerome Gagnon, appearing Saturday from 11am-12pm on at the Cards Comics & Collectibles booth (#916), is a graphic designer by day and a comic book letterer by night. He has been actively lettering comics for the past five years and has worked as a graphic designer in the print industry for over 20 years. His previous lettering jobs vary from children’s books to horror. He has lettered superhero books for Advent Comics, was part of The Mike Wieringo TELLOS Tribute, and the Puerto Rico Strong fundraising anthology. He also participated in the first Blood, Skulls & Bones Kickstarter campaign, and others such as Broke Down and 4 Dead Bodies (#1-4), Cthulhu Invades Wonderland, and more.

Heather Gibb, appearing Saturday from 11am-12pm on at the Cards Comics & Collectibles booth (#916), co-owns and operates indie publishing company Orange Cone Productions with her husband Travis. As an editor, she enjoys taking part in bringing out the best in creators and their stories. As a writer, Heather uses her sense of humor and passion for justice as central themes in her work. Heather enjoys spending time with her family, and has also worked in the field of Child Welfare for over ten years. She has worked on titles such as Granite State Punk, Cthulhu Invades Wonderland, Pup Van Winkle, and The Super-Delish Sing-Along Comic: Cottage Cheese.

Travis Gibb, appearing Saturday from 11am-12pm on at the Cards Comics & Collectibles booth (#916), is a Ringo-nominated creator and has been working in comics off and on for over a decade, producing: Coins of Judas, Granite State Punk, Voodoo Nations, and Cthulhu Invades Oz/Wonderland. He has published books with Scout Comics, Caliber Comics, Image Comics, Second Sight, and Band of Bards. Travis is blessed to work with his wife, Heather, in their co-owned publishing company Orange Cone Productions, where she also works with him as his editor. Last but not least, he is the proud father of two awesome daughters and one amazing son.

David Mack is the Emmy-nominated, New York Times Best-Selling author and artist of Kabuki, writer of Marvel’s Daredevil, cover artist of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Norse Mythology, Jessica Jones, and Fight Club 2 by Chuck Palahniuk. He is artist on Marvel’s Jessica Jones opening titles and Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier film titles, as well as Cultural Ambassador for the US Department of State.

Mack created the Marvel Studios character Echo, who now has her own Marvel TV series on Disney+ and is featured in the Hawkeye Disney+ series. Mack has signed on to direct the HBO MAX television series of Cover, adapted from the graphic novel which is inspired by his work overseas for the US State Department. Cover was nominated for three Eisner Awards: Best Graphic Novel, Best Cover Artist, and Best Painter.

Mack created artwork for the opening titles of the Jessica Jones Netflix TV series (winner of the Peabody Award), based on the book on which he was co-collaborator. The opening titles he worked on with Imaginary Forces garnered an Emmy Nomination in the category of Outstanding Main Titles. For the Academy Award-nominated film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mack created the art and concept for the titles sequence with Sarofsky Designs, which received recognition for the Excellence in Titles Design Award.

Mack’s comic book work has garnered nominations for ten Eisner Awards, four International Eagle Awards, and both the Harvey and Kirby Awards in the category of Best New Talent, as well as many other national and international awards and nominations.

Mack created the final two seasons of Dexter Early Cuts episodes for Showtime (the first, collaborating with legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz). The latest season earned him nominations for both the Writers Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America.

In 2016, the US State Department honored Mack as a Cultural Ambassador selected to travel abroad to teach storytelling in other countries. In the country of Georgia, Mack taught at settlement camps for displaced persons, the Asylum Seekers Center, the Marneuli Youth Center, Tbilisi Arts Academy, and Special Needs school, and the Tbilisi Palace of Fine Arts Museum featured a massive exhibit of Mack’s work and books.

In North Africa and Asia, Mack taught at the school for the Deaf in Tunisia and Singapore, as well as several other schools and universities as a State Department envoy, and was a special guest speaker for an event in Libya.

Mack had gallery exhibits of his work in Paris and Brussels, and recently in Los Angeles and Chicago, presented with originals of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, and he spoke in Barcelona at the OFFFest presentation of trailblazing artists and designers, and delivered an inspiring TED Talk.

Mack directed popular music videos for Amanda Palmer and Dashboard Confessional, and has recently completed a new creator-owned project with Brian Michael Bendis from DC Comics called Cover, which earned him Best Comic Artist of the Year from Comic Watch. Mack is developing his creator-owned comic book Kabuki as a TV series with Sony. In 2018, Mack was honored with the prestigious Inkpot Award for his Achievements in Comicbook Art.

Patrick McDonnell, appearing courtesy of Abrams Books, is the bestselling author, illustrator, playwright, painter, and creator of the comic strip Mutts, which appears in more than 700 newspapers around the world. He has received numerous awards internationally, including a Caldecott Honor and the Reuben, the highest honor given by the National Cartoonists Society. The Art of Nothing, a career-spanning monograph, was published by Abrams ComicArts in 2019. His latest book is The Super Hero’s Journey — an original graphic novel in the Marvel Arts line. He lives in New Jersey.

A New York Times Best Selling author with previous works on DC’s Batman, Superman, and Justice League, and Image Comics’ Wytches, Scott Snyder has made a name for himself, with his current focus on his creator-owned books such as Nocterra, Chain, We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Barnstormers, Dudley Datson, Canary, Duck and Cover, and Book of Evil.

The multi-talented Jim Starlin has worked on both writing and creating art for some of the most noteworthy creations since his entry into the field of comics in the 1970s. The mind behind the Marvel character Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, he is also responsible for a number of noteworthy cosmic characters in the Marvel Universe, including Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and the villainous Thanos, all of whom are featured in the major motion picture, Guardians of the Galaxy. He developed noteworthy runs on Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Warlock, and Silver Surfer, Marvel mini-series Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and Infinity Crusade, and DC Comics’ Batman, The Weird, and Cosmic Odyssey. His Death of Captain Marvel was the first Marvel graphic novel to be published. More recently, he has provided writing and art for DC’s Stormwatch and writing on Green Lantern: Mongul, and he returned to his classic villain with Marvel’s Thanos: The Infinity Revelation.

Sean Von Gorman is an NYC-based comics illustrator and writer. He is known for co-creating Toe Tag Riot (Black Mask Studios), and Pawn Shop (Z2 Comics) with Joey Esposito. He has recently reunited with Esposito on his latest work, The Pedestrian. He has also contributed art for projects published by Image, Dark Horse Comics, and IDW, as well as anthologies such as Occupy Comics (Black Mask) and the Eisner Award-winning Love Is Love (DC/IDW). In addition to his comics work, Sean has also contributed art for Neil Gaiman’s Neverwear and features for Alt Press Magazine and The New Yorker. He is also a brilliant guerrilla marketer, who has been known to handcuff himself to things and escape straitjackets to promote his comics. His next project, Ghost Planet, was released in 2022.

LONDON’S CALLING… and AfterShock is answering the call. The publisher is heading to London for MCM London at the London ExCel. It takes place this weekend, May 27-29. Keep an eye out for Publisher Joe Pruett and the rest of the AfterShock Comics team as they make their first official appearance at this “con across the pond.”
