First Impressions Featuring: Venom, Ve’nam and more Venom!

Welcome to Graphic Policy’s First Impressions where we take a look at a handful of comics in order to discern just how accessible they are for new readers, because every comic could be somebody’s first – and that’s the first question that’ll be answered with this feature. The second is whether youshould  start there because sometimes a book could be accessible to new readers but the quality could be less than average, and so each comic will receive a score out of ten based upon Graphic Policy’s typical ten point scale.

Where possible we’ll also be providing  recap of sorts for the relevant story beats up until the issue in question in order to help you figure out if the series is something you’re interested in, assuming we’ve read any part of the story thus far. All comics were provided for review purposes unless otherwise noted.

 

Venom: First Host #1 (Marvel)
Can a new reader start here? Yes.
Recap & review: This is just a really good story about the Venom symbiote’s first host. I’m not going to insult you by pretending you don’t know who Venom is, and thusly you don’t need a recap here.
Rating: 8.2

Web of Venom: Ve’nam #1 (Marvel)
Can a new reader start here? Yes.
Recap & review: There’s probably some relevance to the main series given that Donny Cates is writing that and this one shot, but I’m behind in the main series and have probably missed that. Which means that I got to enjoy this as a historically set Venom/Nick Fury/Logan story.
Rating: 8.4

Scarlet #1 (DC)
Can a new reader start here? Yes.
Recap & review: Some shit went down, and now Portland is an isolated lawless (maybe?) city led by Scarlet. I have never heard of or read this story before (this is a sequel), but you can jump in pretty quickly once you accept the premise.
Rating: 8.1

Nightwing Annual #1 (DC)
Can a new reader start here? Uh, maybe?
Recap & review: We all know who Nightwing is, right? Well that’ll help, and you can kinda find your way with this annual, but it isn’t always the easiest to pick up on prior events (though in fairness what’s relevant is explained). Not a bad issue, but not the easiest place to start, either.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Asgardians of the Galaxy #1 (Marvel) – A tie-in to the current Infinity Wars event, this comic brings together a rag-tag group of Asgardian warriors. The reason is ok but it’s the personalities and a reveal at the end that’s the real driver here.

Berlin The Complete Edition (Drawn & Quarterly) – Collecting Jason Lutes masterwork looking at the fall of the Weimar Republic through the eyes of its citizens. It’s a society slowly awakening to the stranglehold of fascism.

Border Town #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – Kicking off the new direction of Vertigo that’s a return to the edgy social conscious comics of old. The first issue is absolutely fantastic and a must get. A horror comic with monsters you don’t normally see.

Bully Wars #1 (Image Comics) – A new series from Skottie Young. That alone has us sold. The series focuses on high school bullies with art by Aaron Conley.

Captain America #3 (Marvel) – A fantastic relaunch of the series focused on the role of Captain America in modern society.

Cover #1 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – The fact this is a new Jinxworld title has us intrigued to check it out.

Dark Ark #10 (AfterShock Comics) – Cullen Bunn is a master at horror and this series mashes that genre up with the Bible. So good.

Death of the Inhumans #3 (Marvel) – We admit we were skeptical when we first head about this miniseries but so far each issue has been solid with no issues murdering off long time characters and creating a threat that feels very real.

Dr. Stone Vol. 1 (VIZ Media) – We’ve read it, we love it. Basically, everyone in the world gets turned into stone and a few wake up thousands of years in the future. Where do you go from there?

The Dreaming #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – The Sandman Universe takes off with this debut issue. We had mixed feelings about the teaser comic but we’re excited to check out more.

Thanos Legacy #1 (Marvel) – A piece of the master cosmic plan Marvel has going on.

Transformers: Lost Light #23/Transformers: Optimus Prime #23/Transformers: Unicron #4 (IDW Publishing) – IDW’s Transformers universe is finally coming to an end point and these three series are taking us there. What’s on the other side, we have no idea.

United States vs Murder Inc #1 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – We remember the first volume when it came out and it was a nice spin to the mob story.

The Walking Dead #183 (Skybound/Image Comics) – The introduction of the new community has given the series a shot in the arm and opened up a lot of posibilities. Where is it goign? We have no idea and can’t wait.

WWE NXT Takover: Blueprint #1 (BOOM! Studios) – If you’re a fan of the WWE, this one is a must get.

Review: Pearl #1

Pearl is the story of an exceptional tattoo artist and accidental assassin for one of the modern-day San Francisco Yakuza.

She was born into one life, but another is calling to her. When Pearl accidentally meets one of her peers, her doppelgänger from another clan, she starts to dream of a better life. But Pearl has a very special ability that keeps pulling her back into the violent world she is desperate to escape.

I’ve always been fascinated by tattoos and especially the use of them by some gangs to tell a story. I myself have two and both tell a story though are simple designs. They are memories to me and there’s many more to come to tell my life. Brian Michael Bendis dips into the world of tattooing with Pearl and it’s an intriguing first issue that reminds me a bit of his previous series Scarlet.

The issue is interesting as it’s the debut of Bendis’ Jinxworld by DC Comics and while it’s a good start, it’s not one that has me super excited. What’s interesting though is, I think by the time things are done, the whole will be so much better than the individual issues.

The story isn’t bad in any way, there’s just a spark that’s missing and there’s a sense we’ve seen this before in Bendis’ other work. There isn’t that think that makes it really stand out when it comes to the story.

Where it does stand out is Michael Gaydos‘ art which is as stunning as expected. Gaydos is one of the best artists today and the watercolor like imagery is beautiful and haunting perfectly capturing the story. While the story lacks, the art is a draw, standing out and making this a comic worthy of checking out.

Again, the first issue isn’t bad, there’s just a spark that’s missing to make it stand out from the pack. It is fairly standard Bendis and something we’ve seen before. It’s not a first issue I’m jumping up and down about but I have a feeling that by the time things wrap up, that may change. If you’re a diehard Bendis and/or Gaydos fan, then this is one to get, but for me, this is one to wait and see where it goes.

Archie Meets Batman ’66 #2 (Archie Comics) – The two worlds collide in a fun adventure that really works in the first issue. We didn’t get a lot of Batman/Archie action but it looks like this issue will get us there.

Batman #53 (DC Comics) – This storyline has focused on Bruce Wayne on a jury to decide if Mr. Freeze is guilty after Batman pins him to a murder.

Crowded #1 (Image Comics) – In the future, it runs on an economy of job shares and apps and someone has targeted an individual who then hires the lowest-rated bodyguard to protect her.

Edge of Spider-Geddon #1 (Marvel) – Spider-Verse round 2 is what this sounds like as the multiverse’s Spider-people come together once again.

Extermination #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s big X event that has something to do with the original X-Men… we’re intrigued and hoping this is a return to the great events of the past.

Fence #9 (BOOM! Studios) – A comic about fencing!? Add in a little drama and this comic has quickly become one of our favorites. This is a great example of looking at what others are doing, in this case manga sports comics, and bringing it to Western audiences. Fantastic all around.

Hellicious #2 (Starburn Industries Press) – The first issue of this series was hillarious in a nice twisted way. Short take: little girl who’s a demon and likes to torture things. As we said, twisted.

Infinity Wars #2 (Marvel) – The lead up series left us wanting but the first issue of Marvel’s summer event really caught us off guard in a good way. We’re excited to see what happens next and honestly, we have no idea where this one is going.

Injustice vs. the Masters of the Universe #2 (DC Comics) – We expected a fun first issue but not one with so much depth and thought. Will the second issue be a repeat and continue to surprise? We’ll find out!

Pearl #1 (DC Comics/Jinxworld) – Brian Michael Bendis’ Jinxworld comics are now being published by DC and this new series he’s back with long time collaborator Michael Gaydos. We’re beyond excited.

Ruinworld #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was adorable, fun, and funny, and we’re excited to read this second issue of this webcomic that has come to print!

Tongues #1 (Fantagraphics) – Anders Nilsen series taking place in the modern Middles East following the entwined stories of an imprisoned god, the eagle that is his jailor, an east African orphan on an errand of murder and a young American with a teddy bear on his back, lost in a trackless wilderness. Revenge, evolution, the fate of the world… and a talking chicken.

Terminator: Sector War #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – It’s been a while since we’ve had a new Terminator series and with a new film in production, we’re excited for what’s to come!
Undocumented (Abrams Comicarts) – The story of immigrant workers who come to the United States without papers. A timely graphic novel we’re excited to see humanize this reality.

Volition #1 (Aftershock Comics) – It’s the not too distant future where a race of robots has spawned but are second class citizens. They struggle for equal rights but a virus threatens all artifical life.
