Beginning a titanic new arc: “God Killer”! Slade is armed by Hephaestus to take down one of the Olympian Gods! If any man is bold enough to believe he can murder a god – it’s Deathstroke!

To me the new direction of the DC Universe presents challenges and opportunities for creators, and often it’s the same issue. There’s lots that has come before, but at the same time you want to give readers an opportunity to hop on and not be lost due to that. Some series have succeeded in that, and some have struggled. Deathstroke #7, written by James Bonny and Tony S. Daniel with art by Daniel, balances that tight rope nicely.

While Slade is tasked with a new mission, kill an Olympian God, there’s also nods to whats come before, but that continuity and history is bonus for folks who have been keeping up, not a nuisance for those that haven’t. Still, there’s some things that I scratched my head about, like Slade’s eye, but nothing was important or caused enough issues that it took me out of the story.

The story itself is pretty basic. There’s nothing crazy complicated or deep. Some action, some touching moments, some humor. It’s a bit of a throwback to testosterone comics of old, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some times that’s all the entertainment you need or want.

The art is pretty cool with Daniel balancing the quieter “talking” scenes with the action. The style isn’t over the top, and there’s some interesting panel choices, particularly a two page layout that has one large image in the middle of the page with panels on either side. Generally cool design and art.

The comic isn’t “deep,” it knows what it is and goes with it. Some times mindless action is all we’re looking for, and this comic delivers that in a good way. For folks who want a comic that’s straight up action, this one is for you.
