Immortal Legend Batman #1 Feels Like Batman in a New Setting But Shows Itself to Be More

Immortal Legend Batman #1

Humanity broke the barrier between our universe and our universe’s shadow. From the void came horrific apparitions that craved nothing but destruction. But from this terror…a legend was born. A warrior who found a way to access the energy that binds our universe and the shadow universe, transforming him into a cosmic dark knight. This immortal legend was named Batman. He fought to keep us safe but then one day abandoned the war. Though he didn’t disappear entirely. Now they say he hunts a rouges gallery of monsters…born from the shadows! Immortal Legend Batman #1 delivers a new Elseworlds take on the classic character that really shines the further it goes on.

Immortal Legend Batman #1 is an intriguing start to a series that drops readers into a futuristic world that’s a bit sci-fi and a bit Western. A small town is being haunted by murders with Bruce Wayne as the sheriff and Batman a scary legend who might have crossed the line. Written by Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom, that opening might sound like Batman in a new setting but the duo deliver something more and a bit different.

The opening sequence is really just that an opening sequence, before we’re introduced to this version of Batman as well as Robin and Nightwing and a story of space travel that sounds a bit Warhammer 40,000 which beings from another world unleashed due to it. We’re given the deep dive into it all and then presented a bit of a twist at the end, a different focus than we thought. What begins as a murder mystery morphs into something far different. And that switch is what makes it all rather intriguing and interesting.

The art by Erica D’Urso and Dan Mora is solid. With color by Tamra Bonvillain and lettering by Becca Carey the world is intriguing with an opening that feels more like a Western than anything else. But, the visuals of the series shifts a bit after a while showing off a world and story more entrenched in sci-fi. It’s a cool mix of the two that much like the story itself evolves over time. This Batman is an interesting design as well that feels like a mix of Azrael Batman and Batman Beyond with a bit of others thrown in as well. The take on familiar characters are solid and the initial villain shown feels like a cool riff on a classic Batman villain. The comic looks solid and pops a bit in its visuals.

Immortal Legend Batman #1 is an interesting start. It’s a comic that my thoughts evolved over time as the comic itself morphed throughout. What seemed like a simple Western ends as something more and a bit different. It’s a solid direction and concept and one I want to see more of. Overall, it’s a debut that’s full of surprises and twists and a story that goes in unexpected directions.
