The 2026 Hugo Award Nominations have been announced

LAcon V, the 84th World Science Fiction Convention has announced the finalists for the 2026 Hugo Awards, Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book, and Astounding Award for Best New Writer.

Members of the World Science Fiction Convention are able to vote on the Hugo Awards. Voting begins in early May.

1,488 valid nomination ballots were cast. The nominators made 23,543 nominations for 4,299 works and individuals across 21 categories.

The 2026 Hugo Awards, the Lodestar Award, and the Astounding Award will be presented on Sunday evening, August 30, 2025 at a formal ceremony at LAcon V.

“Best Graphic Story or Comic” featured 362 ballots cast for 243 nominees. The finalists ranged from 19-42 votes. The six nominees are a wide range of storytelling, creators, and publishers.

The 2025 Hugo Awards were presented during Seattle Worldcon 2025 on August 16. 1,338 valid electronic nominating ballots from the members of the 2024 and 2025 World Science Fiction Conventions. Worldcon 2025 WSFS members were able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners for the 2025 Awards.

Hugo Awards Team Members Resign Over Use of AI by Worldcon

The use of AI is controversial in creative spaces with a lot of the current use of the technology involving theft of the works of others. Three members of the Hugo Awards team have resigned over what would seem to be the use of AI by Worldcon.

In late April, Worldcon made a statement regarding the use of AI tools in its vetting process for program participants. In the statement, the convention said it used LLM to vet proposed panelists with the output analyzed after. It justified the use by saying it “saved literally hundreds of hours of volunteer staff time,” an excuse used by corporations to fire staff and not hire human beings for new positions. AI also uses a significant amount of energy and resources negatively impacting the environment.

The three individuals wrote in their announcement:

Effective immediately, Cassidy (WSFS DH), Nicholas Whyte (Hugo Administrator) and Esther MacCallum-Stewart (Deputy Hugo Administrator) resign from their respective roles from the Seattle 2025 Worldcon. We do not see a path forward that enables us to make further contributions at this stage.

We want to reaffirm that no LLMs or generative AI have been used in the Hugo Awards process at any stage. Our nomination software NomNom is well-documented on GitHub for anyone to be able to review. We firmly believe in transparency for the awards process and for the Finalists who have been nominated. We believe that the Hugo Awards exist to celebrate our community which is filled with artists, authors, and fans who adore the works of our creative SFF community. Our belief in the mission of the Hugo Awards, and Worldcon in general has guided our actions in the administration of these awards, and now guides our actions in leaving the Seattle Worldcon.

The Hugo Awards have been hit with issues and controversy over recent years. In 2024, the awards discovered and disqualified fraudulent votes. In 2023, it was accused of censorship due to it being held in China. Leaked emails suggested organizers tampered with votes and excluded potential nominees for political reasons.

Saga Vol. 11 wins the 2024 Hugo Award for “Best Graphic Story or Comic”

The winners of the 2024 Hugo Awards was announced this past weekend. The award highlights excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy and were first presented in 1953 and have been awarded every year since 1955 by the members of the World Science Fiction Society. The awards cover novels, television, film, games, comics, and more.

This year saw comics consolidated into “Best Graphic Story or Comic” and 457 ballots were cast for 256 nominees, narrowed down to 6.

This year’s winner was Saga Vol. 11 written by Brian K. Vaughan with art by Fiona Staples, and published by Image Comics.

2023 Hugo Awards Finalists Announced

The nominees for the 2023 Hugo Awards have been revealed. The announcement was made on July 6th.

1847 valid nominating ballots were received from members of the 2022 and 2023 World Science Fiction Conventions. Voting opens on July 10th.
