Todd McFarlane returns to art as the Spawn Universe Evolves with New Creative Teams!

Todd McFarlane returns to doing more artwork within the Spawn Universe as all four of his core titles—Spawn, King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched—roll out new creative teams this spring. Each debut issue will include a special Cover C 1:50 Foil Variant commemorating the transition, marking the beginning of the line’s next chapter as it moves steadily toward Spawn #400.

The shift begins in Spawn #376, where writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Stephen Segovia propel the series one year into the future. The revelation that Heaven and Hell are real—and have abandoned Earth—has destabilized society at every level. Institutions strain. Governments falter. Spawn himself has vanished. Al Simmons, seemingly restored to humanity, lives anonymously in a fractured Manhattan until his return triggers the attention of “The 400,” a powerful cabal of angels, demons, vampires, and alien entities who believe Spawn’s existence threatens their survival.

That same fracture runs through King Spawn #55, as Rosenberg and artist Thomas Nachlik introduce Hudson Hill, a young man haunted by a psychic vision of the apocalypse—one centered on Al Simmons. As Spawn re-emerges publicly as a symbol of hope, another presence begins to take shape in the shadows. The divide between hero and monster narrows, and the consequences ripple outward.

In Gunslinger Spawn #54, writer Erica Schultz joins returning artist Carlo Barberi as new forces enter the conflict.

The mysterious Regulators arrive to correct a cosmic imbalance, revealing that the war between Heaven and Hell is only part of a larger system of control. Gunslinger finds himself caught in the middle of a recalibration that may cost him everything.

Meanwhile, The Scorched #51 sees writer Thomas Healy and artist Alessandro Vitti push the team into a more aggressive posture (McFarlane will help co-plot these storylines.)

Under Jessica Priest’s leadership, the Scorched move from reacting to threats to targeting them preemptively. Their actions draw scrutiny from governments, divine powers, and hellish adversaries alike, setting off a chain reaction that will redefine alliances across the Spawn Universe.

As these changes roll out across the four core books, the Spawn Universe tightens its focus and raises the stakes—setting the stage for what comes next.

Preview: Gunslinger Spawn #50

Gunslinger Spawn #50

(W) Todd McFarlane (A) Stephen Segovia, Carlo Barberi

Four years ago, Todd McFarlane launched the first large-scale expansion of the Spawn Universe with King Spawn #1. Now we are here to celebrate the success of the expanded Spawn’s Universe with GUNSLINGER SPAWN #50. Part 2 of an oversized issue with a story that will cross over into all three of the #50’s coming out in the coming months. (King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, The Scorched). An ancient force, almost as old as time itself, has returned, and Spawn is in its sights. The story, sent into two chapters per issue, will be penciled by two of the Spawn Universe’s best, Stephen Segovia and Carlo Barberi. This is the one you don’t want to miss. Featuring covers by Todd McFarlane, Puppeteer Lee connecting cover, Skottie Young, and Mark Spears.

Image reveals the details for Gunslinger Spawn #50’s 50/50/50 Celebration

Todd McFarlane Productions continues its celebration of the expanded Spawn Universe with Gunslinger Spawn #50, the second milestone in the 50/50/50 Program—a yearlong crossover event marking the 50th issues of King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched.

This extra-length issue of Gunslinger Spawn delivers part two of an exciting new storyline set to unfold across all three titles, beginning with King Spawn #50 and concluding in The Scorched #50. An ancient force—older than time itself—has returned, and Spawn is in its crosshairs. The tale continues here in two chapters illustrated by Spawn Universe fan-favorites Stephen Segovia and Carlo Barberi, just like King Spawn #50, revealing earth-shattering consequences for Gunslinger and the future of the Spawn mythos.

To mark the milestone, Gunslinger Spawn #50 will debut with a premium lineup of variant covers and incentives that mirror those of King Spawn #50 and the upcoming Scorched #50, uniting all three titles in the 50/50/50 Program. The cover lineup features artwork by Todd McFarlane, Skottie Young, Mark Spears, and Puppeteer Lee—with both Young and Lee delivering connecting cover sets that span all three issues.

At the top of the incentive tier is Cover H, a 1:1000 Raw Pencil Virgin Variant by Todd McFarlane that includes a guaranteed hand-drawn Spawn sketch inserted directly into the book. Fifty of these sketches will be drawn by McFarlane himself. After those 50 orders are fulfilled, all remaining sketches will be randomly assigned from a group of acclaimed Spawn Universe artists: Jonathan Glapion, Carlo Barberi, Brett Booth, Stephen Segovia, and Jason Shawn Alexander. Sketch artist selection is random and cannot be requested, and ordering early does not guarantee a McFarlane sketch.

Each copy of Cover H will also be signed by Todd McFarlane and include a CGC Certificate verifying that both the signature and the inserted sketch are eligible for CGC’s Signature Series program. The certificate also confirms the authenticity of the inserted sketch. McFarlane has committed to never signing this cover again, making these copies strictly limited to this one-time release.

McFarlane is also collaborating with CGC for a special event celebrating the conclusion of the 50/50/50 Program. Official details will be announced at the end of September.

Gunslinger Spawn #50 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, December 31. The Final Order Cutoff deadline for comic shop retailers is slated for Monday, November 24:

  • Cover A by Todd McFarlane – Lunar Code 1025IM0252
  • Cover B by Puppeteer Lee (Connecting Cover) – Lunar Code 1025IM0253
  • Cover C by Skottie Young – Lunar Code 1025IM0254
  • Cover D Blank Sketch Cover – Lunar Code 1025IM0255
  • Cover E 1:50 copy incentive by Mark Spears – Lunar Code 1025IM0256
  • Cover F 1:100 copy incentive virgin color by Todd McFarlane – 1025IM0257

Spawn Comics are Getting Black Sketch Covers

Todd McFarlane has announced a limited run of blank sketch covers on all four of his monthly comic titles in honor of the 30th anniversary of Spawn and Image Comics. In the months of April and May only, Todd McFarlane will debut blank sketch covers for the first time on three of the newest titles, King SpawnThe Scorched, and Gunslinger Spawn.

Todd McFarlane Productions will not only release a blank sketch cover on the three newest titles, but the regular Spawn monthly comic will also feature a blank sketch cover, which he hasn’t done since the record-breaking Spawn 300 in 2019. To commemorate Spawn #1 being released thirty years ago, McFarlane will also release a special blank sketch cover of Spawn’s inaugural issue. All the above covers will only include logos and pricing.

Before this year, Todd McFarlane has rarely offered these types of covers on the regular Spawn monthly book over the past 30 years. In addition to the traditional white blank sketch cover, McFarlane will release for the first time a black blank sketch cover for each of the four monthly titles too.

This will be the only time in 2022 retailers will be able to purchase these blank sketch covers (black or white versions).

Review: Gunslinger Spawn #2

Gunslinger Spawn

Todd McFarlane’s Gunslinger Spawn has been a blast so far, tapping into the raw power of the early Spawn comics all while setting the titular gunslinger as an independent character within its universe. It’s been working quite well, thanks in part to McFarlane’s approach to character development via badass moments drenched in blood and violence.

The star of the show in this new series, though, is Brett Booth’s art. It’s gotten to the point that I can’t imagine anyone else taking on this Spawn other than him. In fact, Booth should draw Gunslinger Spawn till the end of time, and then continue doing so when time starts up again.

Issue #2 starts with the angel vs. gunslinger face-off that closed the first entry. A generations old feud is paving the Gunslinger’s path of destruction as he looks for the relatives of the man that left him to die back in his place of origin. Angels have descended to put a stop to his revenge mission, but they only seem to anger this Spawn even more. Ripped angel wings and shotgun blasts ensue.

The scripting is relentlessly fast-paced, with characters exchanging plot points through snappy banter and doing a fair bit of worldbuilding during action sequences. It keeps the story from feeling heavy-handed, although things feel a bit thin in the narrative department. It might become somewhat more complex as more playing blocks get thrown into the mix, but so far it’s pretty straightforward revenge tale.

Booth’s art on the other hand does wonders to elevate the storytelling, making each panel explode with detail and expression. It’s not enough to just say his work is kinetic. It’s moves and transitions like it has a life of its own. Characters derived from the original Spawn already possess that iconic quality found in the original design. Booth captures with the Gunslinger, but he adds a whole other level of presence to the character that allows him to forge a more unique identity.

Part of what makes this work is how brutal Booth’s pencils can be when capturing the rage and the emotion behind the Gunslinger’s actions. Al Simmons’ Spawn possess those same things, but there’s a sadness to him that shapes his existence differently. Booth’s Gunslinger has tragedy in his backstory, but red hot anger is his emotional anchor. This is a man that breathes heavy and walks with malice in his footsteps. Booth captures that all the time and it’s nothing short of impressive.

Gunslinger Spawn #2 is another great showcase of Brett Booth’s skills and they’re enough to warrant a purchase. The story itself might need a bit more kick to rise to the occasion, especially in the ‘man out of time’ aspects of it where the Gunslinger pokes fun at modern practices (which seems a bit forced), but the necessary elements for success are there. While the story catches up, though, you can just sit back and enjoy the art.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 Delayed

Todd McFarlane took to video to tell fans that Gunslinger Spawn #1 will be delayed one week until October 27. The issue is related to the paper shortages which caused one cover to not be printed in time. Since some stores sell the series’ various covers as a set, the decision was made to delay everything… for everyone.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Gunslinger #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Ant #1 (Image Comics) – A new ongoing from Erik Larsen? We’re definitely intrigued to see where he takes this classic character.

Batman #115 (DC Comics) – “Fear State” has been a solid event so far and this issue gives us a better idea of Scarecrow’s plan.

Batman Secret Files: Peacekeeper #1 (DC Comics) – Want to learn more about Peacekeeper-01? This is the issue to do so.

Catwoman: Lonely City #1 (DC Comics) – It’s been ten years since Batman and his allies died and Catwoman is just getting out of jail for the crime. It’s a very different Gotham than what she remembers.

Critical Role: Tales of Exandria #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – The popular roleplaying game group gets an all-new comic series diving deeper into the world they’ve created!

Death of Doctor Strange #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was interesting and a lot of setup for what’s to come. Here’s hoping it begins to pay off in the concept.

Destroy All Monsters: A Reckless Book (Image Comics) – This series of graphic novels have been fantastic so far and we’re excited to see the next chapter. If you’re a fan of crime/noir, check this out.

Dungeons & Dragons: Mindbreaker #1 (IDW Publishing) – IDW’s D&D comics are always entertaining for fans of the game and fantasy.

Eat the Rich #3 (BOOM! Studios) – A solid horror series taking on the wealthy.

The Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering (Image Comics) – We’ll admit we could use a good dive into learning about comic book lettering and this seems like the perfect way to do that!

EXO: Legend of Wale Williams Vol. 1 (Dark Horse Comics) – If you’ve never gotten a chance to check out this indie comic series, now’s your chance. This is also a chance to check out the amazing African comic world, YouNeek YouNiverse!

Gunslinger Spawn #1 (Image Comics) – Todd McFarlane continues to expand his Spawn universe with this brand new series. What’s been released has been interesting so far and we want to see how each of these series are unique and also tie together for a shared world.

Hellcop #1 (Image Comics) – The Pan-Dimensional Security Cops, aka Hellcops, must deal with Known Reality Plane 1301-A, a literal hell.

Maw #2 (BOOM! Studios) – A solid horror series for the spooky season.

Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog #1 (Image Comics) – A new tie-in series to the praised series Killadelphia. Untold evil lurks the streets of Baltimore.

Not All Robots #3 (AWA Studios) – Robots have replaced humans in the workforce. A human family’s robot spends its time in the garage working on machines the family is pretty sure is designed to kill them. Great satire from Mark Russell and Mike Deodato Jr.

Nubia & The Amazons #1 (DC Comics) – There’s new leadership for the Amazons! Check out the new status-quo that has Nubia in charge!

Phoenix Song: Echo #1 (Marvel) – At the end of the latest Avengers storyline featuring the Phoenix, the cosmic force chose Echo as a new host. What’s next? We’ll find out starting here!

Refrigerator Full of Heads #1 (DC Comics/Hill House Comics) – Hill House Comics are back with this sequel to Basketful of Heads.

X-Men: Trial of Magneto #3 (Marvel) – The series has been an interesting one full of emotion and some solid action moments. There’s obviously a lot going on with someone pulling the strings and we want to see how this all wraps up.
