Marvel introduces the G.O.D.S.

Who are the G.O.D.S.? This fall, readers will find out in a revolutionary series by Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti. Announced back in March, G.O.D.S. will see two of the industry’s greatest modern visionaries dramatically redefine Marvel’s pantheon of cosmic beings and masterfully deconstruct the forces behind reality. The breathtaking new saga will introduce a host of new characters—all players in a secret conflict at the crossroads of science and magic!

Heralding their debut, a new line of variant covers this August will spotlight some of the core cast as they team up with heroes and villains from throughout the Marvel Universe. This past weekend, fans met Wyn in Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men #1, and these new variant covers provide a first look at the likes of Aiko Maki, Dmitri, Cubisk Core, and Mia. From powerful mystics to daring scientists, these are agents of THE POWERS THAT BE and THE NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS and servants to the very building blocks of creation. They may be new to readers but they’ve been scheming and clashing with each other for eons in the shadows.

The G.O.D.S. Variant Covers will adorn nine issues that each contain a bonus story page written by Hickman that explore just how these characters move throughout the Marvel Universe and how they interact with its iconic inhabitants like the Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Scarlet Witch, and more. In addition, some of the cast of G.O.D.S. will attend mutantkind’s biggest night and witness the beginning of the Fall of X in July’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1!

Here are the characters spotlighted in the variant covers and bonus pages:

  • Wyn, a powerful magic expert who’s operated in secret for thousands of years and is now forced to come out of the shadows.
  • Aiko Maki, a high-ranking agent brutally loyal to the ways of science and willing to do anything to keep the building blocks of creation in balance.
  • Dmitri the Science Boy, Wyn’s reckless partner who has a secret mission of his own to discover the dark truth of his past.
  • Mia the Magic Girl, a young sorcerer struggling to achieve her full potential.
  • Cubisk Core, a mysterious being of pure corruption seeking to shatter the existing systems.
  • And more!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Titans #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Arcade Kings #1 (Skybound/Image Comics) – This throwback to the arcades of old has us excited to revisit the type of place we spent a lot of time in.

Avengers #1 (Marvel) – It’s a new creative team and a new Avengers team and after the massive run and epic before, we’re interested in the fresh and new start.

Batman: Brave and the Bold #1 (DC Comics) – This anthology sounds exciting and lets be honest, the title has a lot of prestige about it.

Cyborg #1 (DC Comics) – It’s a new status quo for the character that sends him home. In such an odd age of technology in the real world, how will this series stand out?

Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider #1 (Marvel) – Danny was the Ghost Rider we grew up with so we want to see what this series has for us in nostalgia factor.

Dark Ride #6 (Skybound/Image Comics) – This has been a great horror series and we’re sucked in more and more into the weirdness.

Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #1 (IDW Publishing) – The first “Dark Spaces” anthology was solid. This new story focuses on a supernatural conspiracy that may expose a town’s historical sins.

Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 (Dynamite) – The Scar villains series has been great so far, so we’re absolutely excited to see more of what Dynamite does with Disney’s characters. So far, so good!

Fear of a Red Planet #4 (AfterShock) – The series has been a solid sci-fi detective series and we’re sucked in and want to know who did it!

The Gimmick #3 (AHOY Comics) – The series is an interesting mix of wrestling and super powers that has us sucked in.

Guardians of the Galaxy #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a hell of a new direction and we want to explore more of it. What the hell is Grootfall!?

Hulk Annual #1 (Marvel) – Found footage horror mixed with the Hulk? How has this idea not been done before!?

Jinx: Cursed Life (Archie Comics/Archie Horror) – Archie has done a hell of a job with their horror line, so any new entry has us excited to see what they’re up to.

Mighty Barbarians #2 (Ablaze) – The first issue was solid mixing classic fantasy with a bit of a more modern comic style.

Titans #1 (DC Comics) – With the Justice League sidelined, we want to see how this team stands up in their absence.

The Vigil #1 (DC Comics) – We don’t know a ton about this series and its characters but we’re always intrigued by new characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3 Review: A First Class Sendoff to the MCU’s Second-Best Team

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3

Let’s be real: it feels like the once-mighty MCU now really needs a hit. Phase 4 has been, to be kind, uneven. And so, can James Gunn bring some magic back before heading off to DC? Yes. Good news, true believers! Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3 is a good movie! You will laugh, you will cry (believe me, you will CRY), you will believe a living talking tree can fly? Ok, well, maybe not that far, but it is a solid movie.

That being said, it is missing some of the magic of previous outings. But it does deliver a satisfying end to the trilogy of films focused on our special band of a-holes. Rocket builds stuff. Drax and Mantis banter. Groot takes new forms. Star-lord is… just sort of there (which is good if you, like many, are at the end of your tolerance for Chris Pratt). But returning supporting characters also get some great work, like Kraglin and Cosmo. Cosmo is a very good dog. Cosmo is maybe the best dog. Good dog, Cosmo.

Our story involves Rocket’s origins and his ties to new villain The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), who is desperately searching for Rocket, deploying every resource at his disposal. This includes returning baddies The Sovereign and their new experiment teased in the after-credits of Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2: Adam Warlock (Will Poulter). Some comic book nerds are going to be very upset at Adam Warlock’s portrayal in this film as it is incredibly divorced from its comics lore. Just sit tight and wait to the end and what this portends for the future of the character, and forgive the film for needing a Big Bad who is actually a match for our Guardians of the Galaxy.

After an initial fight with Warlock leaves Rocket mortally wounded, Peter and the rest of Guardians have to undertake a desperate heist to save their friend. And through this we learn about Rocket’s origins and his previous life with other experiments of the High Evolutionary Lylla, Teefs, and Floor. And this is the section of the movie that will make you cry and should probably come with a content warning.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a series that has massive kid-appeal. Your kid loves Rocket and Groot, right? Well, this film contains scenes of implied animal torture and experimentation that is incredibly upsetting both for children and adults. While the intent is obviously to create pathos, it is maybe the most disturbing thing so far in the relatively anodyne MCU.

The High Evolutionary is also abusive: the way he speaks to Rocket and treats him is steeped in patterns any kid who grew up in a verbally and emotionally abusive home will immediately recognize. Again, this might be traumatic for people, so go in eyes open and maybe have a therapy session scheduled soon after, just in case.

And while the film focuses a lot on Rocket, its greatest strength is in providing something for every other single team member to do. Everyone gets a true superhero moment, and even better, several team-up moments where we see our gang of misfits fighting together. A hallway battle late in the third act is a symphony of teamwork and gonzo filmmaking only James Gunn could deliver.

Explosions? Yes. Guts and bodily fluids of various colors spraying everywhere? (It’s ok MPAA, they’re aliens and creatures, get it?) You know it! Laser blasts, punches, kicks, impalements, bisections, Groot showing what he can do with his various forms? Oh, HELLS yes.

And, again, everyone gets a hero moment. Mantis has a particularly fun one late in the film that I will simply call her Paul Atreides moment. But it is that same sort of heroic epic moment usually only given to single protagonists, and every. single. member. of the team gets one. It’s obvious James Gunn is leaving everything out on the field in his likely final entry into the MCU, and the last cinematic outing for this particular team of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The themes from past films of found family continue to shine through. There’s also a strong potential queer/trans allegory in a lot of this, as The High Evolutionary obsesses over “his creations” needing to be “perfect” in his eyes. (Again, the abuse shown and implied here.) But as Rocket and his fellow experiments choose their own names and do things beyond his designs, they are further abused and rejected.

There is also a story of liberation here that comes at a time when basic human rights, from reproductive freedom to state governments bullying trans kids (and even legislators), are increasingly under attack. Guardians of the Galaxy continues to be a series for those of us who are misfits, but have a strength — when we fight together — that rivals any Avengers lineup.

It’s nowhere close to a perfect film. But it earns a space as one of my favorite films of Phase 4. And its message comes at a time when we couldn’t possibly need it more.

I am Groot with this new Hot Toys figure

As fans eagerly await the third installment in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Hot Toys has announced a new addition to their 1/6 scale Movie Masterpiece Series … everyone’s favorite Flora Colossus, Groot!

The Guardians of the Galaxy have returned to defend the universe once again, bringing their own unique brand of heroism to an all-new adventure. In Volume 3 of the series, Groot has grown a little more muscular, and is discovering new powers and abilities to protect his beloved crew and family.

This screen-accurate collectible figure is finely crafted and individually hand-painted. Drawing inspiration from the character’s appearance in the movie, the Groot 1/6 Scale Figure features a newly developed headsculpt with three interchangeable portraits, plus a detailed recreation of his distinctive body with realistic moss and tree textures. The figure also features a wealth of finely sculpted accessories such as Groot’s heavy pistols, a detonator, and a selection of sprouts that attach to his body for added texture and movie accuracy.

But that’s not all! Hot Toys has also unveiled a special Deluxe Version of the Groot figure which comes with even more accessories and features. Accessories include additional pistols, an interchangeable tree-textured torso, poseable branching arms for dynamic posing options, and branching legs that can be displayed with Groot’s different face sculpts.

The Groot 1/6 Scale Figure and the Groot 1/6 Scale Figure (Deluxe) are available to pre-order now.
