Moana 2 and Wicked repeats in 1 and 2 while Kraven the Hunter doesn’t find its prize and The War of Rohirrim is a military disaster

Moana 2

The top two spots for the weekend box office wasn’t much of a surprise. Moana 2 took the top spot again in its third week. The movie added $26.6 million to its domestic total which is now $337.5 million. Over the week, the film added $79.5 million to its international total which is now $379.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $717 million after just three weeks. The first film grossed $643,332,467 worldwide in 2016 which is about $845.7 million in today’s dollars. It’s likely the sequel will gross that and beyond by the time things are done.

Wicked came in second place with $22.5 million to bring to lift the film to a little over $359 million. Internationally, the movie grossed $30.9 million over the week to bring that to $165.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just under $525 million.

Kraven the Hunter debuted in third place with a rough $11 million domestically and $15 million internationally. It’s the third misfired in Sony’s attempt to expand the “Spider-verse” even further. Morbius debuted in 2022 with $39 million domestically and went on to gross $167.5 million worldwide. Madame Web debuted earlier this year with $15.3 million domestically and went on to gross $100.5 million. Will Kraven the Hunter even break $100 million worldwide?

Gladiator II slipped one spot to come in fourth with $7.8 million in its fourth week. Domestically, the movie has grossed $145.9 million. Over the week, it added $16.9 million internationally to bring that to $252.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $398.5 million.

Rounding out the top five was The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim which debuted with just $4.6 million domestically and $5.7 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $10.3 million. It’s a hell of a fall for the franchise which dominated with its live action films. Did the animation kill it? The lack of starpower?

Mini Reviews: Gladiator II

Gladiator II

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy see more movies than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the movies, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Gladiator II – Although obviously not an instant classic like its predecessor, Gladiator II is a solid piece of spectacle that remixes elements of the original while adding fantasy/escapism elements. It’s like restarting a video game after loosing to the final boss and winning in the end.

Playing the arms dealer/gladiator owner Macrinus, Denzel Washington steals every scene he’s in as a man of opportunity in a decadent time. (The sequence where he plays peek a boo with a monkey/consul is priceless.) Gladiator II doesn’t have has a tight narrative arc as its predecessor, and its fight scenes don’t build Hanno’s arc like it does with Maximus.

At times, it just feels like Ridley Scott is crossing items off his action sequence bucket list, but he and Paul Mescal’s weary facial expressions capture the vibe of a world that has been exploited by wealthy, powerful warmongers far too long.

Overall Verdict 7.1

Wicked shows it’s popular and conjures up a weekend box office win and beating Gladiator II in the arena

Wicked

In a weekend with two anticipated films, one was the clear winner, by a lot. Wicked took the top of the weekend box office with an estimated $114 million. The film also grossed $50.2 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $164.2 million. There’s a good chance the film will have another solid weekend with Thanksgiving coming up as it’s a film families can enjoy. But, it’s also possible the hardcore fans showed up the first weekend boosting the debut but possibly resulting in a crash. Still, those same hardcore fans will likely see the film multiple times, so there’s a good chance the movie experiences a solid second weekend.

In second place was Gladiator II. It grossed $55.5 million domestically and $165.5 million internationally, for a worldwide debut of $221 million. The original Gladiator debuted with $34.8 million in 2000 which would be about $63.8 million in today’s dollars. So, it’s better and also worse in a way.

Red One slipped to third place with a 58.6% drop after debuting in first last week. That film grossed $13.3 million to lift its domestic total to $52.9 million. Internationally, it dropped hard grossing just $14.2 million over the week after a $50 million debut. There it has now grossed $64.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $117.1 million after two weeks.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. debuted in fourth place with $5.1 million.

Venom: The Last Dance rounded out the top five adding $4 million to its domestic total which is now $133.8 million. Internationally, it grossed $14.1 million to bring that to $322.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $456.4 million.
