SPX Hosts a Legendary Roster of Guests this Weekend

Small Press ExpoSmall Press Expo is this weekend and will feature a historic lineup of guests. SPX 2012 boasts a murderer’s row of talent, with an indie comix fan’s dream guest list featuring—for the first time ever at a single event—Chris Ware, Françoise Mouly, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, Daniel Clowes, and Adrian Tomine.

This legendary group of creators has collectively won fifteen Ignatz Awards since the festival prize was instituted at 1997’s inaugural SPX.  Among the nominees for the 2012 Ignatz Awards, Los Bros Hernandez are represented in three categories (Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Story, and Outstanding Series).  The 2012 Ignatz Awards will be presented Saturday at 9:30 P.M.

Limited edition posters by Chris Ware, as well as a tote bag of Daniel Clowes art designed by Alvin Buenaventura, will be available at the SPX Sales Table. There will be a special set of all of the posters, flyers, banners and program guide cover signed by the artists in an edition of 25, as well as a poster of the badges designed by Jaime Hernandez, also for sale.

In addition,  appearing at this years show are such honored guests as Michael DeForge, Lille Carre, Becky Dreistadt, Dean Haspiel, and Nick Abadzis.  Guests will be participating in a compelling lineup of programming taking place both Saturday and Sunday, featuring several “spotlight” sessions on individual creators, in addition to panel discussions and special presentations.

SPX is also pleased to announce that publishers NoBrow and Koyama Press will be making their first appearances at SPX 2012, joining longtime SPX participating publishers such as Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, and Oni Press in showcasing their latest and greatest books.

SPX Announces the Small Press Expo 2012 Programming Schedule

The Small Press Expo is pleased to announce the SPX 2012 Programming Schedule.  SPX has its usual thought-provoking programming featuring leading comics artists and critics in conversation. As in previous years, the Programming Schedule will feature two simultaneous tracks on both Saturday and Sunday, September 15th and 16th.

SPX 2012 programming highlights include special spotlight discussions with headline guests Daniel Clowes, Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, François Mouly, Adrian Tomine, and Chris Ware, all of whom will also join in several other panel discussions.

This year’s programming schedule will include several panel discussions, with artists including Nick Abadzis, Derf Backderf, Michael DeForge, Theo Ellsworth, Renée French, Sammy Harkham, Tom Hart, Dean Haspiel, Stan Mack, John Porcellino, Katie Skelly and Lauren Weinstein.

This year’s panel discussions will include:

  • A discussion of Crockett Johnson’s Barnaby, featuring Clowes, Mark Newgarden and Ware.
  • A spotlight on British comics, including Abadzis, Glyn Dillon, Nobrow’s Sam Arthur, Ellen Lindner, and Luke Pearson.
  • A consideration of comics as children’s literature with French, Mouly, Newgarden and Brian Ralph.
  • Reflections on life after “alternative comics,” with Clowes, the Hernandez Brothers, and Tomine, moderated by Bill Kartalopoulos.
  • A discussion about the needs and challenges of institution building in comics.
  • Our annual hands-on comics workshop, led by Robyn Chapman, Hart, and Alec Longstreth.

This year is the seventh year that SPX programming has been organized by Programming Coordinator Bill Kartalopoulos. Kartalopoulos is a comics educator, critic and curator who has taught classes about comics at Parsons The New School for Design and co-organizes the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival. He is a Contributing Editor for Print Magazine, and assisted Art Spiegelman on the production of the Eisner Award-winning book MetaMaus.

SDCC 2012 – Fantagraphics and comiXology Announce Digital Distribution Agreement

Yesterday, Fantagraphics celebrating the 30th anniversary of publishing the Hernandez Brothers’ groundbreaking Love and Rockets announced entrance into the digital age through a brand new digital distribution agreement with comiXology.

To mark the occasion, Fantagraphics Books and comiXology have immediately made available the first four issues of the Hernandez Brothers’ phenomenal Love and Rockets: New Stories. Following Comic-Con, comiXology will debut Love and Rockets: New Stories #5 on the same day as the print release is available in comic book stores this September. Subsequently, Fantagraphics will begin to release certain titles from their extensive front list and back catalogue across the entire comiXology platform.

Fantagraphics and comiXology worked closely together to acquire the highest resolution source material to make sure these volumes of Love and Rockets: New Stories look great in comiXology’s new high–definition comic format — CMX-HD — for Love and Rockets fans that are reading on the new iPad.

SDCC 2012 – Fantagraphics Celebrates 30 Years of Love and Rockets at San Diego Comic-Con

30 Years. Three. Zero. In 1982, Gilbert, Jaime and Mario Hernandez published their first comic with Fantagraphics, which debuted at that year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego. In 2012, Fantagraphics Books announces the best anniversary present you can give the comics making trio: a year of celebrating Love and Rockets.

Jaime Hernandez remembers his first Comic-Con well. “The first time we spotted Love and Rockets some guy was already selling it for half-off.” Fellow professionals took an interest in the Hernandez brothers’ creation. “Chris Claremont walked up and joked that all the women on the cover should have ‘X’es on their belts,” Jaime joked. “I brought along some pages from the next issue and Frank Miller looked through them ‘studying’ my inking style.”

Thirty years later, fans will line up around that same block to get books signed at this year’s Comic-Con International, where Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez are invited special guests of the show and will even have a special section devoted to their work in the official convention souvenir program. Look for a major Love and Rockets-related announcement to be made at the show as well during the Love and Rockets panel on Saturday.

SDCC Releases

Fantagraphics and the Hernandez Brothers will debut three new books at the show. First up is the newest work by Gilbert and Jaime, Love and Rockets: New Stories #5 , featuring Gilbert’s return to Palomar and Jaime’s much-anticipated follow up to “The Love Bunglers” (from #4). Also debuting is God and Science: Return of the Ti-Girls, Jaime’s superhero epic combining material from Love and Rockets: New Stories #1 and #2 plus 30 all-new pages by Jaime. Meanwhile, don’t forget the children: Comic-Con also hails the release of Gilbert’s children-focused graphic novel, The Adventures of Venus.

Fantagraphics is also partnering with Graphitti Designs for the 30th Anniversary and debuting six new Love and Rockets t-shirts at the show. SDCC attendees might want to pack one shirt less for the show, instead picking up one of these colorful designs featuring their favorite Hernandez characters for a great price of $18.99 each, available at the Fantagraphics booth.

Panel by panel and page by page, Fantagraphics is proud to have a thirty year relationship with such prolific creators as the Hernandez Brothers and welcomes all SDCC attendees to come to the Fantagraphics Booth (1718-1722) and visit these special guests, who will be signing daily. Also, don’t miss the 30th Anniversary of Love and Rockets panel on Saturday at the con, from 1:30pm – 3:00pm in Room 24ABC. Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth will moderate a lively trip down memory lane with all three Hernandez Brothers and make a major announcement regarding the future of the series.

SPX Announces Françoise Mouly and Adrian Tomine as Guests of Small Press Expo 2012

Small Press Expo has to announced Françoise Mouly and Adrian Tomine as honored guests of SPX 2012.  Both Mouly and Tomine will be making their first SPX appearances this year and are in addition to the previously announced guests Chris Ware, Dan Clowes and Jamie & Gilbert Hernandez.

Mouly, art editor for The New Yorker since 1993, is the author of several books including collections of cover art from The New Yorker, and has edited the forthcoming 2012 edition of the prestigious The Best American Comics series.  Mouly got her start in comics as the co-creator (with husband Art Spiegelman) of the groundbreaking and highly influential RAW series in 1980.  Consciously designed as an art object, RAW was, throughout the eighties, the premier showcase of cutting-edge comic art and storytelling techniques.  Many of the celebrated contributors to RAW, including Charles Burns, R. Crumb, Chris Ware, and Art Spiegelman have since gone on to grace the cover of The New Yorker with their artwork during Mouly’s tenure as art director. Her successful Toon Book imprint takes her cartoon and illustration aesthetic into the world of children’s books.

Writer/artist Adrian Tomine burst onto the comics scene in the mid-‘90s with Optic Nerve, and his closely observed characterization and thoughtful storytelling quickly earned comparisons to the likes of Raymond Carver and nominations for the Eisner Award.  In addition to volumes collecting his sketches and otherwise uncollected work, Tomine’s critically acclaimed Optic Nerve stories have been collected into several handsome volumes.  Though he is a generation removed from the “RAW generation,” Tomine’s distinctive artwork is of a piece with their sensibility, and has also gone on to grace the cover of The New Yorker on numerous occasions.

Small Press Expo announces Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez as guests for SPX 2012

Bethesda, Maryland; February 21, 2012 – The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons, welcomes acclaimed independent cartoonists Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez as guests for SPX  2012.  2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the first issue of Love and Rockets, and SPX is proud to be the only East Coast comic festival to have Jaime and Gilbert as guests for this years celebration.

In addition to celebrating the anniversary of their works, this will mark the first time in the 21st century that previously announced guests Chris Ware and Dan Clowes will be at an event with Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez.

There are four new books tentatively scheduled to be released by Fantagraphics Books by Jaime and Gilbert in 2012 prior to SPX, including Love and Rockets New Stories #5. Other books include two collections and a companion volume:

The Adventures of Venus by Gilbert Hernandez
God and Science by Jaime Hernandez
The Love and Rockets Companion by Marc Sobel & Kristy Valenti

Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez ushered in the 1980s as bold and vibrant new voices in the comics medium at a time when the comics publishing industry had all but given up on independent artists. After sending their self-published Love and Rockets #1 – an intoxicating blend of punk rock, sci-fi, B-movies, and seemingly the entire history of cartooning – to The Comics Journal, the series opened the gateway for a new generation of cartooning talent.

Although Love and Rockets has been relaunched and reformatted several times throughout its history, Los Bros have continued with the series non-stop since that first self-published issue, through the evolution of their individual artistic styles and concerns. Gilbert in particular has published prolifically with a variety of publishers, but the long-form stories of Gilbert’s town of Palomar and Jaime’s Locas remain among the most respected and loved independent comics. Their compelling characters have grown older with their devoted long-term readers, even as they have continued to attract new readers.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – September 1, 2011 – Comic professionals came together Saturday night, August 20, 2011 to honor their peers during the presentation of the 2011 Harvey Awards, sponsored by DC Comics, comiXology, Insight Studios, IDW, and Painted Visions Comics, Cards & Games. Named in honor of Harvey Kurtzman, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the field of comics and is the only industry award both nominated and selected by comic professionals. First awarded in 1988, it is one of the industry’s oldest and most respected awards.

Scott Kurtz, who is best known for his webstrip, PvP, served as Master of Ceremonies for the third year in a row, bringing his great sense of humor and charisma to the stage.

We’ve put together about 500 of these goodie bags that will be available with every purchase, while supplies last.
