Gehenna: Naked Aggression

Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 delivers a standard but entertaining action revenge tale

Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1

There’s a contract out on Gehenna. But she’s managed to stay alive long enough that the contract has been resold several times as consolidated debt between criminal organizations. Now she intends to put a stop to the chain of custody on that contract. With a bullet. Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 delivers a kick-ass woman seeking revenge tale and while not original, it is entertaining.

Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 is a throwback in some ways. It’s a straight up story of revenge. There’s nothing too deep in it. It’s the Punisher but a female lead. Bullets fly. People die in spectacular ways. Cars crash. There’s some humor. It’s the R-rated movie you turn your brain off and enjoy the action. And, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Written by Patrick Kindlon Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 is an entertaining start that throws you right into the action. Gehenna’s story is revealed in bits as the story progresses but she’s out to kill the people that killed her husband. It’s not that complicated. But, Kindlon kind of makes it as Gehenna takes a hostage, a young child, which adds in some interesting aspects and makes you think about some things when it comes to that action. Gehenna isn’t going to harm the child, she knows it and the people pursuing her likely know it too. The people pursuing her need to be careful because they too don’t want to hurt the kid. Kindlon highlighting that takes a shield and turns it into an obstacle to make the action more difficult for all of those involved.

And that shows there’s thought being put into all of it. Gehenna is a really valley and was a site of idolatrous practices including child sacrifice and eventually became a place to dispose of garbage, becoming a metaphor for hell or a place of punishment. It’s an interesting bit of depth considering the actions that got Gehenna to this point and the fact she has a child as a hostage.

The art by Maurizio Rosenzweig is pack with action. With color by Mateo Vattani and lettering by Jim Campbell it has a roughness about it that nails down the chaotic and kinetic feel of it all. This is a comic that’s all about the improbable shooting and the damage it causes, as well as the acrobatic action that defies all logic. The comic has a lot of that and it delivers much like action films of the 80s and 90s. This comic knows what it is and goes with it.

Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 is an entertaining debut that delivers exactly what you’d expect and want. It’s nothing more than an action packed revenge tale and that’s completely ok, it’s a mainstay genre for a reason. It delivers action. It delivers quippy moments. It delivers heads exploding and blood flying. It knows what it is and delivers exactly that.
