NYCC 2025: Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck Collide!

Dynamite Entertainment has announced a brand-new Disney cartoon and comics crossover! The two franchises at the foundation of Dynamite’s new era of Disney comics collide in Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck starting January 2026 — heightened even more by the ultimate creative team! The series will be written by Greg Weisman and Tad Stones with art by Ciro Cangialosi and lettering by Fabio Amelia.

“I am the Terror That Flaps in the Night!”
“We are the Defenders of the Night!”
“I am Darkwing Duck!”
“We are Gargoyles!”

In the 1990s, the beloved Disney Afternoon TV programming block inspired a legion of fans, and continues to do so for further generations to this day. Two shows stood out from the pack with their superhero genre inspired ethos, portraying powerful heroes protecting their cities from evildoers of all kinds. With fan-favorite characters and expansive lore, Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck had an indelible impact on audiences. Now the principal creators behind both mythos are coming together for an unprecedented comic book event!

When the diabolical Demona uses a mysterious magic mirror to recruit Morgana Macawber to her cause of mass destruction, Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack flap their wings — actually they board the Thunderquack — over to Manhattan. They’ll quickly cross paths with Goliath and Elisa. It might be time for a classic hero versus hero misunderstanding brawl, and so much more will follow!

Greg Weisman is a revered writer and producer behind several hit animated series, as well as a long legacy in comics, with Gargoyles being his magnum opus across both mediums. Since 2022 he has been continuously chronicling new tales of his stone guardians with Dynamite, with comics picking up right where he left things. He’s continued to flesh out the arcs of his deep bench of characters, and now in this series will have a whole new set of relationships to work his magic on.

The talented Tad Stones is no rookie either, with nearly three decades working directly under the Disney umbrella. He played a key role in developing other Disney Afternoon staples like Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and the follow up series for Aladdin and Hercules. His most iconic creation is the one and only Drake Mallard, known to his St. Canard criminal foes as Darkwing Duck. He’s recently returned as well, with a series of stunning covers on the latest series by creators Daniel Kibblesmith, Ted Brandt, and Ro Stein. This titanic team-up with Weisman will mark his first time writing Darkwing in 15 years!

The colossal co-writing tandem of Greg Weisman and Tad Stones will be ably assisted in this historic epic by the Disney comics veteran virtuoso Ciro Cangialosi. No stranger to these characters, such as illustrating Dynamite’s spotlight on Negaduck, this will be his first chance to flex his skills on the Manhattan Clan. Letterer Fabio Amelia rounds out the core team.

The worlds of Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck colliding is a can’t-miss chapter in comics, and to mark the occasion editor Nate Cosby has assembled an all-star team of top names for covers. Italian master Ivan Bigarella delighted fans on DuckTales, and will here as well. Clayton Henry‘s mastery of superheroic artwork fits these unique heroes well. Recent Dynamite superstar Declan Shalvey dishes up a delightful addition. Then both Tad Stones himself and Ciro Cangialosi pull double beyond the interior pages with covers.

Dark Horse Books Presents Ripperland

Jack the Ripper has returned to stalk the streets of London once more in the new LGBTQ+ mystery thriller comic, Ripperland. The series, released initially in four single issues, will now be collected in one complete paperback volume. It is co-written by multi-award nominated creators Steve Orlando and John Harris Dunning , with art and cover art by Alessandro Oliveri, colors by Francesca Vivaldi, and letters by Fabio Amelia.

The year is 2188, and Jack the Ripper has returned to London. For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul’s grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened. Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and rejoin the modern world? American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd-century London.

The Ripperland (136 pages, 6.625 x 10.1875”) paperback collection stalks the shelves of bookstores on September 9, 2025 and comic shops on September 10, 2025. It is available for pre-order now on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, TFAW, and wherever books and comics are sold. The book will retail for $19.99.

Darkwing Duck Flaps into a Brand-New Ongoing Series by Daniel Kibblesmith and with Original Creator Tad Stones!

The Duck Knight returns this February, as Disney’s beloved Darkwing Duck spreads his wings and dons his crime-fighting garb in a new ongoing comic book series! Fan-favorite writer and comedy virtuoso Daniel Kibblesmith helms the team, joined by artistic duo Ted Brandt and Ro Stein, as well as contributions from beloved original character creator Tad Stones!

The fowl that felons most fear is back in action each and every month, upping the ante for Dynamite Entertainment’s new era of comic book tales following the escapades of Disney’s world-famous ducks. This new series takes a fun approach, courtesy of writer Kibblesmith, seeking to ask and answer all the essential questions about the beloved star. How did this avian exemplar develop his redoubtable reputation? What lessons did he learn in his earliest days of foe-foiling? His legion of fans, both within the story and reading these comics, as well as his adopted daughter, Gosalyn, want the lowdown on all these key questions. Darkwing is more than happy to revisit the highlights of his crime-busting career — though there can be no promise that these chronicles will not be embellished, organized, chronological, or verifiable in any way. But they will be a blast!

As fans return to the rooftops of St. Canard, they will learn that an unreliable narrator is better than no narrator at all. Readers are invited to revisit Darkwing Duck’s formative years, and his most famous feats. It’s up to them to determine what they can believe!

Joining the creative team of Kibblesmith, Brandt, Stein, colorist Dearbhla Kelly, and letterer Fabio Amelia, is the character’s legendary original creator from the early 1990s. Artist, animator, writer, director, and producer Tad Stones is back with his most signature work. The debut issue of the new series sports an incredible cover newly illustrated by Stones.

On the variant covers front, Tad is joined by another artistic great in Mark Bagley, as well as Nicoletta Baldari, Ciro Cangialosi, and interior art duo Brandt and Stein.

Ripperland #1

Under York #1 is an interesting concept with a wonky start

Under York #1

New York’s destiny is written in its depths… Alison Walker is a promising young painter in Manhattan. But she has a secret. She’s also a witch. She and her family belong to the world of Under York, a mysterious, underground New York where five powerful clans of witches have reigned for centuries. This is the universe in which Alison Walker grew up. The universe she fled and doesn’t want to hear about anymore. Until fate catches up with her… Under York #1 is an interesting concept with some questionable choices as far as the story.

The concept of a world underneath a world isn’t anything new. The underneath world being a side of a major city you don’t know about isn’t really new either. Mixing that, with a little bit of mob mentality of families, is something a bit different, but again, something we’ve seen before. Still, Silvain Runberg‘s Under York #1 sets up an intriguing world and concept. There’s just some narrative choices that are a bit perplexing.

Alison Walker as a character is interesting. She’s an artist and works a food truck. There’s anxiety about her big art gallery opening which helps show off her personality a bit as she bites the heads off of customers. There’s Alison’s friend and also a fixation on a good looking guy running for Mayor of the city. It feels like a distraction as it’s presented but is surely an important aspect of the story to come… at least I hope it is.

What we’re thrown into, and find out eventually, is Alison’s family history as she’s pulled back into what she tried to get out of. It’s the classic mobster getting out from the family and being dragged back story. But, how she’s dragged back is utterly perplexing and just makes no sense. Instead of being contacted, told of the situation, we get an elaborate battle where she’s dragged back. There’s no setup, it’s just… attack. Since it, and what follows, takes up a large chunk of the comic, it’s a bit of a headscratcher and feels needlessly antagonistic. It’s a fight for fight’s sake.

The art too is a bit… odd. Done by Mirka Andolfo with ink by Carmelo Zagaria and color by Piky Hamilton, it looks like Andolfo’s work only slightly. It feels like 90s Image where people tried to copy other styles and it’s slightly off. The character’s aren’t consistent in their look and the action sequences not all that exciting either. Overall, it’s fine to look at but I’d have not guessed this was Mirka Andolfo.

Under York #1 isn’t a bad debut but also there’s a lot of choices for the story that just feel odd. Add in art that’s not consistent and you get a read that’s ok but doesn’t hook you to want to come back and see what’s next.
