Old and Snake Eyes Take the Top Two Spots as Space Jam Plummets

It was two new films at the top of the box office for the weekend. Old took the top spot earning an estimated $16.5 million. The film also grossed $6.5 million internationally for a worldwide opening of a little over $23 million.

In second place was Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The film opened with $13.4 million domestically and internationally it grossed $4 million. That puts the film at $17.4 million after its first weekend.

Black Widow slipped one spot earning an estimated $11.6 million. That brings its domestic total to $154.8 million. Over the week, the film added $59.4 million internationally to bring that total to $160.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $314.9 million.

In fourth place was the last weekend’s champ, Space Jam: A New Legacy. The film dropped 69.2% to bring in an estimated $9.6 million. Domestically, the film has earned $51.4 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $19.6 million to bring that total to $42.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just under $94 million.

Rounding out the top five was F9: The Fast Saga. The film grossed an estimated $4.7 million to bring its domestic total to $163.4 million. Internationally, the film added about $400,000 to its total to bring that to $436.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $600.2 million.

Initial numbers have 55 films earning $70,566,747 from 34,099 theaters. That’s another solid dip from last weekend’s 40 films which earned $91,530,003 from 30,712 theaters. The average earning was $2,069.47 this past weekend, a drop from the previous weekend’s $2,980.27.

There’s a new weekend box office champ as Space Jam: A New Legacy took first place. The film, which also debuted on HBO Max, earned an estimated $31.7 million domestically. Internationally, the film earned a little over $23 million. Worldwide, the film opened with $54.7 million.

Black Widow tumbled from first place losing 67.3% from the previous weekend. The film brought in an estimated $26.3 million to bring its domestic total to a little over $132 million. Internationally, the film added about $22.7 million over the week to bring that total to $100.7 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $232.7 million. The film has also earned over $60 million from Disney+ early access putting its actual gross around $300 million so far.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions debuted in third place. The film earned $8.8 million domestically and $4.5 million internationally. Worldwide, the film has grossed $13.3 million.

F9: The Fast Saga is slowing down and came in fourth place over the weekend. It grossed an estimated $7.6 million domestically to bring that total to $154.8 million. Internationally, the film added about $35.9 million over the week to bring that to $436.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $591.3 million.

The Boss Baby: Family Business rounded out the top five. The film added $4.7 million to its domestic total to bring that to $44.6 million. Internationally, the film added about $2 million to its total over the week to bring that to $3.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $48.3 million.

Initial numbers have 40 films earning $91,530,003 from 30,712 theaters. That’s solid but a dip from last weekend’s 39 films which earned $119,147,708 from 28,025 theaters. It’s still one of the best weekends of the year so far. The average earning was $2980.27 this past weekend, a drop from the previous weekend’s $4,251.48.

Black Widow Delivers Over $218 Million in its Debut

It looks like Disney‘s plan to split openings between theaters and a “premier” offering on Disney+ has paid off for Marvel StudiosBlack Widow. The film opened with $80 million in domestic theaters, the best debut of a film since the pandemic caused utter chaos.

Subscribers to Disney+ are able to rent the film for an extra $30 (plus they need a regular subscription) and Disney reported that generated more than $60 million. The studio has been tight-lipped as to how films have done so to release this one is interesting and raises more questions about what hasn’t been released.

The film also earned $78 million from 46 international territories to ring its box office haul worldwide to $158 million but with its digital numbers, it’s over $218 million.

F9: The Fast Saga was knocked out of first place earning an estimated $10.9 million. Domestically, the film has brought in $141.3 million, one of the better numbers for films since the pandemic. The film also earned about $30 million over the week at the international box office to bring that total to $400.5 million. Worldwide, the film has earned an impressive $541.8 million.

The Boss Baby: Family Business dropped one spot to third. It earned an estimated $8.7 million to bring its domestic total to $34.7 million. Internationally, the film earned just shy of $250,000 over the week to bring that number to $1.7 million and $36.5 million worldwide.

The Forever Purge came in fourth place adding an estimated $6.7 million to its domestic total. That now stands at $27.4 million. Internationally, the film added about $3.8 million to its total over the week to lift that to $7.4 million. Worldwide, the film has brought in $34.8 million.

Rounding out the top five was A Quiet Place Part II which added a little over $3 million to its total. The film has earned $150.7 million domestically. Internationally, the film added about $16.2 million over the week to bring that total to $128.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $279 million.

Initial numbers have 39 films earning $119,147,708 from 28,025 theaters. That’s shy of just double the previous weekend’s 44 films which earned $68,949,541 from 30,906 theaters. It’s one of the best weekends of the year so far. The average earning was $4,251.48 this past weekend, over double the previous weekend’s $2,230.94.

It’s a long holiday weekend so numbers for Monday should be still incoming but F9: The Fast Saga again won the weekend box office with an estimated $24 million. That brings its domestic total to $125.9 million after two weeks. Internationally, the film added about $39.5 million over the week to bring that total to $374.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $500.3 million.

The Boss Baby: Family Business took second place with an estimated $17.3 million. Domestically, the film has earned $23 million. Internationally, the film earned a little over $1.5 million to bring its worldwide total to $24.5 million after its first weekend.

In third place was The Forever Purge which earned an estimated $12.8 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $15.9 million. Internationally, the film earned $3.6 million to bring its worldwide total to $19.4 million.

A Quiet Place Part II dropped from second place to fourth and added $4.2 million to its domestic total. It has now earned $145.8 million. Internationally, the film’s gross stands at $112.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $257.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which added $3 million to its domestic gross bringing that to $31.4 million. Internationally, the film has earned $15.6 million to bring its worldwide total to $47.9 million worldwide.

Initial numbers have 44 films earned $68,949,541 from 30,906 theaters. That’s a bit of a dip from last weekend’s 44 films which earned $98,657,861 from 28,013 theaters. But, it’s still one of the better weekends of the year so far. The average earning was $2,230.94 this past weekend, almost double the previous weekend’s $3,521.86.

F9: The Fast Saga has answered a big question, will people return to movie theaters? The answer is yes as the film brought in an estimated $70 million. The movie had a monster debut, the best of the year which has put the film in fourth already for total domestic gross. It’s the best domestic opening since December 2019 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The international gross is even bigger with the film having earned $334.9 million so far. That brings the worldwide total to $404.9 million.

In second place was A Quiet Place Part II which held the spot from the previous week. The film earned an estimated $6.2 million to bring its domestic total to $136.4 million. Over the week, the film added $15.4 million to bring its international total to $112.1 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $248.5 million.

Third place was held by The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which grossed $4.9 million. That brings the domestic total to $25.9 million. Internationally, the film added $5.5 million domestically to bring that total to $5.5 million for a worldwide total of $31.4 million.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway took fourth place with an estimated $4.9 million to bring its domestic total to $28.9 million. Internationally, the film added about $8.5 million over the week to bring that to $79 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $107.9 million.

Cruella held on to fifth place adding $3.7 million to its domestic total. That now stands at $71 million. Over the week, the film earned $17.3 million internationally bringing that total to $112.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $183.8 million.

Initial numbers have 44 films earned $98,657,861 from 28,013 theaters. That’s a massive increase from last weekend’s 45 films which earned $45,647,321 from 30,222 theaters. The average earning was $3,521.86 this past weekend, almost double the previous weekend’s $1,510.40.
