That’s the message from Image Comics, over two dozen of the industry’s greatest creators, and our friends at DC Comics and Marvel Comics, who have all banded together to deliver the greatest CBLDF benefit comic yet — CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011!

Famed comics editor Bob Schreck, Editor-in-Chief of Legendary Comics, and Assistant Editor Greg Tumbarello view censorship as the ultimate form of bullying and have gathered an all-star team of comics creators to tell powerful stories that take a stand against censorship. CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 comprises 48 powerful pages of all new stories and art. The proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the ever-important First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Schreck declares, “It’s an honor to be asked to edit LIBERTY ANNUAL! We wanted to show the human side of what it means to be censored, and we’re elated with how many powerful and heartfelt tales were delivered. With an American facing prosecution in Canada for the comics he reads, the work that CBLDF does is more important now than ever, and the CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL is essential tool in the fight against censorship.”

CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 collects incredible contributions, including original stories by superstars J. Michael Straczynski (Superman: Earth One), Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman), J.H. Williams III (Batwoman), Steve Niles (30 days of Night), Judd Winick (Catwoman), Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), and Carla Speed McNeil (Finder). Look for all-new tales featuring Grendel by Matt Wagner, Cowboy Ninja Viking by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, and Elephantmen by Richard Starkings and Shaky Kane. Plus: a massive and first-ever full-color story from independent comics master Craig Thompson (Blankets)! Marvel and DC Comics have stepped up to show their support, with all-new pin-ups of Batman by Dustin Nguyen, X-Men by Greg Land, Green Lantern by Ivan Reis, and the Avengers by Greg Horn! It’s all topped off by incredible covers by John Cassaday, Matt Wagner, and two variant covers by Frank Quietly: a full-color, 1 in 25 cover, and a black and white, 1 in 50 cover!

“Bob’s experience as an editor is hard to beat, and we’re proud to have him at the helm,” says CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein. “Bob made a book that has something to say, without being sentimental or preachy. He’s made a comic we can all be proud of, and that will go a long way towards advancing the CBLDF’s important work.”

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson says, “It should go without saying that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights as citizens of this great country. Our right to free expression is challenged on a daily basis, though, and sometimes, those challenges occur within the comics world. Without the diligence of organizations like the CBLDF, everyone in the comics community would be much worse off. There are always bullies out there trying to keep people from enjoying the rights we’re all entitled to, but thankfully there are also people willing to stand up for those rights. I’m proud that Image is able to lend a hand.”

Join the fight against censorship by picking up your copy of CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 (AUG110415), a 48-page full color comic book benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, available from Image Comics on October 12, 2011, for $4.99.

Official Press Release

TALKING ELEPHANTMEN IN THE WALKING DEAD

ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN gets an exclusive preview in THE WALKING DEAD #81

Berkeley, CA – 13 January 2011 – In March 2011, comics fans will get a special treat with ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1 from Image Comics, an INVINCIBLE RETURNS-style one-shot that’s perfect for both long-time fans and readers just now discovering the series.

Image Comics is pleased to present a special advance preview of this landmark issue of ELEPHANTMEN in THE WALKING DEAD #81, the second part of the provocative “No Way Out” story arc. Consisting of five never-before-seen pages, the preview will come in full color.

ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1 is written by Richard Starkings and painted by Axel Medellin, with variant covers by Starkings, Ian Churchill (MARINEMAN, Supergirl) and Ed McGuinness (Hulk, Superman), along with an incentive cover by J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl).

“I am a big fan and loyal reader of THE WALKING DEAD,” says Starkings. “I know from talking to fans at shows that we have an overlapping readership. This is a great opportunity for TWD readers who have not looked at ELEPHANTMEN to get a tantalizing taste of the series. MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN is an easy jumping on point and features the beautiful full color artwork of our new regular artist, Mighty Axel Medellin!”

Image Publisher Eric Stephenson declares, “ELEPHANTMEN is one of the most original concepts in comics. What Richard and Axel are doing with this issue and the arc that follows is nothing short of amazing. If this stuff doesn’t get you interested, you hate comics, you hate America, and you hate life! Okay, maybe that’s a little over the top, but my point is: This is an excellent, excellent series that everyone should be reading.”

The Elephantmen are the survivors of genetic engineering experiments conducted by a sinister organization that sought to create biological weapons of mass destruction. Freed and rehabilitated, the Elephantmen now live among the people they were designed to destroy, continually treated with suspicion and contempt except by a handful of trusted human allies. But when these allies find themselves continually at risk, how long can they remain loyal to the Elephantmen?

THE WALKING DEAD #81 (NOV100472), a 32-page black and white comic book featuring a special preview of ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1, will be in stores February 9, 2011, for $2.99. ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1 (JAN110548), a 40-page full-color comic book for $3.99, will be in stores March 30, 2011.

Also out in early 2011: ELEPHANTMEN: COVER STORIES #1 (February 16, $5.99, DEC100455), a 64-page full-color collection of covers and sketches by Ladrönn and Boo Cook that features a flip cover by Cook; ELEPHANTMEN: WAR TOYS, VOL. 2: ENEMY SPECIES OGN (March 2, $9.99, NOV100423), an all-new 104-page full-color graphic novel by Starkings and artist Boo Cook; ELEPHANTMEN: WAR TOYS: AGATHE (March 9, $3.50, AUG100414), an all-new one shot by Marian Churchland (BEAST) and Moritat (The Spirit); and ELEPHANTMEN, VOL. 4: QUESTIONABLE THINGS HC (March 23, $34.99, JAN110550), a 312-page full-color graphic novel.

Official Press Release

ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN

A perfect jump-on issue!

Berkeley, CA – 14 December 2010 – SFX Magazine praises the world of ELEPHANTMEN, calling it “a future gone wrong made to look nightmarishly beautiful,” and Comic Book Review Power Rankings says “ELEPHANTMEN is continually one of the most engaging and beautiful books on the stands.”  The critically praised series that Comic Book Resources calls “subtle, smart and succinct” is seeing a slew of new releases in 2011, particularly during March!

In March 2011, comics fans will get a special treat with ELEPHANTMEN: MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1, an INVINCIBLE RETURNS-style one-shot that will please current readers and garner new fans for the series. It’s a perfect jump-on issue!

Readers will also get an advance sneak peek of MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN in Robert Kirkman’s THE WALKING DEAD #82!

This stand-alone oversized issue from Image Comics, written by Richard Starkings and drawn by Axel Medellin, will feature variant covers by Starkings, Ian Churchill (MARINEMAN, Supergirl) and Ed McGuinness (Superman, Deadpool). It will also feature a special retailer incentive cover by the incomparable J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl, Fairy Tale Fantasies), the first of triptych of covers that will continue with issues #31 and #32 of the ongoing series.

March 2011 also sees the release of ELEPHANTMEN, VOL. 4: QUESTIONABLE THINGS, a gorgeous hardcover that collects issues #24-30 and features art by Möritat (The Spirit), Medellin, and Marian Churchland (BEAST).

Starkings explains, “We just rounded out our fourth year of publication with Image Comics in 2010, so it’s fitting that we move into 2011 with our fourth hardcover collection, featuring the first issues by our new regular artist, Mighty Axel Medellin. After contributing a page to our All Star 25th issue, his first complete issue was #27 and since then he’s consistently blown me away with his versatility on each and every issue. He has been a fan of the series from the get-go, and it shows on every page; his work on MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN will make you lick every page — and I still think I’ve barely scratched the surface of his abilities. I’m very happy to be starting our next story arc with Axel and a special number #1 issue!”

Adds Image Publisher Eric Stephenson, “Richard has a fantastic eye for talent, and after introducing the world to the stellar work of Möritat and Marian Churchland, he’s found another winner in Axel Medellin. If you haven’t been picking up ELEPHANTMEN before, now is definitely the time to get hooked on one of the most original and exciting series in comics!”
