Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Action Comics #992 (DC Comics) – With “The Oz Effect” over, we’re intrigued to see where this series goes as that story attacked the very hope Superman is built on.

The Apocalypse Girl #1 (Amigo Comics) – Metis is 16, has all these problems and more. Because, on top of that, the End of the World happened and she has to cope with bloodthirsty demons and a 4,000-years old, critical, undead mom! This just sounds awesome.

Betty and Veronica: Vixens #1 (Archie Comics) – We’ve read it, it’s awesome. Check out our early review.

The Demon: Hell is Earth #1 (DC Comics) – Out! Out! Our favorite Demon is back in a new limited series. The first issue is intriguing and should be fun for long time fans of the character.

Detective Comics #969 (DC Comics) – Kicking off “Fall of the Batmen.” That title alone has us taking notice.

Doomsday Clock #1 (DC Comics) – We’ve already posted multiple reviews, but this is THE comic of the week. After lots of build up the world of Watchmen and DC collide.

Doppleganger #1 (Alterna Comics) – Dennis’ grip on reality fully unravels when an evil version of himself begins to torment him. Alterna has been doing an awesome job with their newsprint line of comics and this is a brand new one to check out. Just $1.50 people!

Eleanor & the Egret #5 (AfterShock) – Amazing art and beyond adorable story. If you’re not reading this series, you’re missing out.

Gregory Suicide (Dark Horse) – A graphic novel taking on clones and a story that spirals in paranoia. A solid read with some really cool art.

Imaginary Fiends #1 (DC Comics/Vertigo) – Imaginary friends that also want you to kill. The procedural meets… well, we’re not quite sure. First issue is a great set up in what will be an interesting twist on the police genre.

Long Lost #1 (Scout Comics) – Stranger Things meets Ghost World in Long Lost, the haunting story of two estranged sisters who find themselves drawn back to their small southern hometown to unlock the disturbing mysteries that are hidden there, with all roads leading back to their enigmatic, secretive mother

Motor Girl #10 (Abstract Studios) – The final issue of the series. We’re sad already.

Rugrats #2 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – We loved the cartoon. We loved the first issue. We’re getting our Rugrats fix, how about you? A comic that’s great for kids and their parents looking for nostalgia.

Sherlock Frankenstein & the Legion of Evil #2 (Dark Horse) – The world of Black Hammer continues to expand in this series. Jeff Lemire people!!!

Silver Sable and the Wild Pack #36 (Marvel) – 90s nostalgia, nuff said.

Star Wars #39 (Marvel) – If you’re not reading Marvel’s Star Wars comics you’re missing out on great action and a fantastic extension of the world. If you’re a fan of the movies and not reading these, you’re really missing out.

Transformers: Optimus Prime #13 (IDW Publishing) – Post “First Strike” Optimus heads into the Cybertronian wilderness to search for the first new life in four million years. These types of stories tend to really stand out.

Void Trip #1 (Image Comics) – The story of Ana and Gabe, the last two humans left alive in the galaxy. They’re low on fuel, they’re low on food, and they’re low on psychedelic space froot, but they’re still determined to make it to the promised land: hippy-paradise, super-planet Euphoria.

WWE #11 (BOOM! Studios) – If you’re a fan of wrestling, these comics are a must.

X-O Manowar #9 (Valiant Entertainment) – One of the best series out there today.

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #4 (Valiant) – Two years ago, I would have laughed at you if you told me I’d be super excited to get my hands on this comic (despite having access to review copies I still buy this every month), I’d have laughed at you for hours. I genuinely though X-O Manowar was a stupid name with a stupid concept. The. I gave it a chance… and now it’s one of my favourite series. Each issue is a monthly highlight for me.

Scrimshaw #1 (Alterna) – The newsprint movement returns with another comic at $1.50. I have no idea what it’s about but every one of Alterna’s newsprint comics have been great so far. No reason not to get this, really.

Suicide Squad #20 (DC Comics) – I am hella excited for the start of the “False Flag” arc. A new arc means new mayhem and after what happened last issue, it means a new team leader and I can’t wait to see how it all shakes out.

Throwaways #9 (Image) – I think they’ve finally gotten the hang of things and there’s more focus than tricks in this issue.

Deadpool vs Punisher #5 (Marvel) – We’ve come to the end of the road and I am eagerly awaiting this finale while “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” plays on a loop in head.

Jean Grey #3 (Marvel) – The newest take on Jean Grey isn’t here for the Phoenix foolishness and she will find a way to keep her out of her mind and body by any means necessary. So obviously, I’m all the way here for this!

Top Pick: Jean Grey #3 (Marvel) – I’m really enjoying this book and love how Jean Grey is being portrayed; a strong female character out to take control of her own life. She’s gotten flashes of The Phoenix coming for her, and surprisingly the X-Men aren’t taking it seriously (you’d think after everything they’ve been through with the Phoenix the mere mention of it would cause panic). But now Jean is off on her own to get some answers and do what she can to shape her destiny and not follow the path of her past self. It’s a great read with great writing and I strongly recommend it.

The Defenders #2 (Marvel) – I’m really liking seeing these characters together in their own book, even if it is to coincide with the upcoming Netflix series. There’s plenty of action and good banter between the characters and I can’t wait to see where this title goes.

Totally Awesome Hulk #20 (Marvel) – I don’t read this title, but I am really excited about the Weapons of Mutant Destruction crossover with Weapon X. I want to keep up with all the pieces to see this puzzle come together.

Top Pick: Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 and Jonah Hex/Yosemite Sam Special #1 (DC Comics) – DC has been knocking it out of the park with their crossovers. First their Hanna-Barbera ones and now with Looney Tunes. Each issue has been fantastic to read and generally have been good to great. They are exactly what comics should be, lots of fun.

Bankshot #1 (Dark Horse) – Alex De Campi and Chris Cross’ new series about a man who is either a modern-day Robin Hood or a terrorist. I read the first issue and immediately wanted to check out more.

Clue #1 (IDW Publishing) – The classic board game turned movie is now a comic book. I liked the game and loved the film and can’t wait to see what IDW does with it. I’m fully expecting multiple ending fun.

Eleanor & Egret #3 (AfterShock Comics) – A beyond adorable comic series about an art thief and her bird and the policeman who’s attempting to track them down. The story is cute and art is amazing.

Medisin #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The concept is great, doctors who treat villains. The first issue hooked me and I’ve been looking forward to seeing what the second is like.

Top Pick: 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – This series is one that has taken awhile to finish, but so far it has been worth the wait. Hopefully #5 follows shortly after!

The Flash #22 (DC Comics) – It is so far so good for The Button, and I’m excited to see how this all pans out and sets up the big fall event by Johns.

Superman #23 (DC Comics) – One of my favorite Rebirth books just keeps getting better. This looks to be another Jon heavy issue, which is okay with me.

The Mighty Thor #19 (Marvel) – Aaron has been doing a fantastic job on Thor for years, and this run is no different. I have enjoyed the epic galactic war and more Quentin Quire is never a bad thing.

Batman #23 (DC Comics) – Now that The Button is ending in this weeks The Flash, this book gets back to the aftermath of Bane. I’m looking forward to how everything plays out.

Top Pick: Star Trek: The Next Generations: Mirror Broken #1 (IDW Publishing) – The Free Comic Book Day release put this on my radar as I’m not much of a Star Trek fan (I watch the shows once in a while, but wasn’t a regular thing for me). That issue sucked me in with a Mirror world that I want to find out more about and see where this series goes.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – It feels like forever since the last issue, but as soon as I start reading it it’s like getting together with an old friend. Funny and surprisingly tense this issue.

Eleanor & Egret #2 (Aftershock Comics) – The first issue was cute and quirky with a fun story and amazing art. I can’t wait for this second one.

Ian Livingstones’ Freeway Fighter #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic game comes to comics and the first issue is fantastic. If you’re a fan of Mad Max or that type of world, this is one that’s a must get.

Josephine Baker (Self Made Hero) – A graphic novel about this trailblazing woman who lived a life that’s so amazing it can’t be true… but it is, so read up and find out more.

Top Pick: Generation X #1 (Marvel) – FINALLY! I have been waiting for this title since it’s reveal. I loved the original run of Generation X back in the day, and I know this is a new batch of students taking up the name, but Jubilee is now in charge…how can this not be good? The line up is interesting, and anything with Quentin Quire is definitely worth checking out. This should be a fun read.

Super Sons #4 (DC Comics) – This book is fun and action packed and I love this new dynamic duo of Superboy and Robin. You definitely should be reading this title.

U.S.Avengers #6 (Marvel) – Steve Rogers is looking to take down Roberto and his team. Like they’re going to let that happen. This book has been hit or miss with me, but I am curious to see how they deal with Rogers and Hydra taking over.

X-Men Gold #4 (Marvel) – Gambit turns up, so you know things are going to be exciting. I’d like to see him re-join a team of X-Men, so why not this one?

Review: Eleanor & The Egret #1

The most daring art thief in Paris has struck again, and the police have assigned their best detective to the case. His only clue? A single white feather left at the scene. Could this feather belong to the thief? To the thief’s accomplice, an oversized talking egret? Or will his investigation lead him to somewhere even stranger? (Answer: all of the above.) Presenting a peculiar and unforgettable tale of birds and banditry, paintings and pets, larceny, love and… lamprey-wielding assassins?

Aftershock Comics has been consistently releasing solid series from a “who’s who” of creators and this week sees the latest with Eleanor & The Egret from writer John Layman and artist Sam Kieth. That combination alone of writer and artist had me super excited to read what sounds like a fun and cute story that feels like it fills a gap of the types of stories Aftershock releases.

Whimsical is one way I’d describe this story that feels like a mix of time periods as to when it takes place so not only is it whimsical, but there’s a sense of magical too. Layman and Kieth have put together a world that is very close to ours, but there’s just slight difference in the demeanors of individuals and how some dress that makes it feel like a mix, part victorian/steampunk (minus the steampunk) part modern. It’s interesting in that way and the setting is unique.

The first issue knocks it out of the park introducing us to the key individuals, settining things up with some fun and funny action, and also sets up conflict beyond the police detective looking for an art thief. There’s a twist there while not unique is still interesting and again feels a little like a throwback.

Layman is helped by Kieth who is a master of blending worlds and whose art I’ve loved for what feels like decades at this point. Kieth has a distinctive style in both how characters are drawn and the coloring that goes along with it all. Here too his artistic style is fantastic adding to the overall vibe of the comic in a similar way that Janet Lee enhances Jim McCann Dapper Men series.

This first issue is a fun start of a quirky new series that delivers cute entertainment and has me really looking forward to see what happens next and where it all goes.

Eleanor & The Egret from John Layman, Sam Kieth and Aftershock in April

Aftershock Comics has announced a brand new series from writer John Layman, artist Sam Kieth, and colorist Ronda Pattison. Eleanor & The Egret is a slightly surreal tale of an art thief and her sidekick, a talking egret who gets just a bit bigger after each successful caper, as they embark on a escalating series of daring thefts of world-famous paintings, and dodge pursuers in an increasingly weirdly dangerous game of cat-and-mouse.

The fable meets surrealist romance is out April 5th.
