Creed: The Next Round #4 delivers a decent finale that expands Creed’s world

Creed: The Next Round #4

Amara prepares for the showdown of a generation, aided by family and coaching that only the ring can bring. But winning the war in the ring can only go so far, while the war in the boardroom remains… Creed: The Next Round #4 wraps up an intriguing extension of the Rocky and Creed brand.

Overseen by Michael B. Jordan and written by Latoya Morgan and Jai Jamison, Creed: The Next Round has been an interesting way to further extend the Creed storyline started not too long ago. The series picked up on a throwaway line from the third film, diving deeper into Adonis Creed’s siblings as Adonis’ daughter attempts to carve her own legacy in the ring.

The series has been decent overall. It has done a solid job of expanding the franchise in logical ways and opening things up further to explore. Where it slips, and does so in Creed: The Next Round #4, is rushing things. The series should have been a four issue series. It feels too compressed, too condense. Not enough of its solid ideas are given enough room to expand and explore. The story overall feels like a three act play stuffed into four issues.

In Creed: The Next Round #4 not only do we need to deal with Adonis’ sibling issues but Amara’s big fight. It all is wrapped up well enough but everything deserved more. More interesting imagery, more emotion, more drama, and more boxing. The issue hits the beats you’d expect but doesn’t deliver the “f-yeah” feeling you’d expect. There’s something missing that both Creed and Rocky films nailed consistently. A montage is cut short. The fights never quite delivering the dance you want or the brutality you expect. A graphic novel for each act would have allowed for exactly that as well as build more into the family drama of Adonis, his wife, and daughter as well as Adonis and his siblings. Everything feels rather… rushed, as if it’s up against a bell.

The art is a bit mixed too. The series has had moments of greatness but these past two issues have slipped a bit. Paris Alleyene, Lea Caballero, and Wilton Santos handle the pencils and ink while Gab Contreras and DJ Chavis handle color with Andworld Design on lettering. While there’s some interesting visual moments, the art style of the three is different enough to notice and unlike earlier issues, some of the characters don’t look as much like their onscreen counterparts. BOOM! has had some issues with multiple artists on titles lately and this is a prime example of that working against the end result.

Creed: The Next Round #4 is a fine ending to the series. It leaves things open for some interesting next chapters and new directions for the franchise to go in. Hopefully, someone believes in that potential and keeps things going. A comic spin-off of the film series that delivers the next chapter is a great way to go and a lower barrier to dive further into and expand the world of the Creed family.

Creed: The Next Round #2 dives deeper into the world

Creed: The Next Round #2

There are those family members that people just don’t like.  They find themselves either hated or not talked about at all. Whatever slight occurred lives on for years. The ones whom are not talked about at all simply do not exist.

Sometimes fractures in families just don’t mend. It becomes a sticking point that endures . The crazy thing is sometimes those rifts are deeper than political rivals. It eventually makes strangers of the people that you share common blood with. In the 2nd issue of Creed: The Next Round, we find Adonis’s daughter and Apollo’s granddaughter, Amara as she finds that one relative.

We’re taken back to Artemis house, where Amara is trying to convince her distant aunt to train her. Artemis’ reputation has preceded her and Amara wants to learn from someone just like her. As Artemis recounts her journey. We learn about her career as a boxer and how good she was and what lead her to leave the sport altogether. Meanwhile, Adonis meets a new technology company, one that may change all their lives. He also finds out that Amara went to meet with Artemis, which leads to a heated standoff between the two half siblings. By the issue’s end, Artemis starts training Amara in secret and a mysterious competitor steals the company Adonis was trying to buy from him.

Overall, Creed: The Next Round #2 is a story that fans will love as it dives deeper into this world. The story by Latoya Morgan and Jai Jamison is electrifying. The art by the creative team is beautiful. Altogether, a story that more than satisifies fans of boxing movies

Creed: The Next Round #2 continues to expand the Creed family

Creed: The Next Round #2

Amara will fight by any means necessary, even if it means going to someone forbidden-someone who lived in the shadow of her grandfather, Apollo Creed. Will she have what it takes to pass the rigorous test of her new trainer, and navigate the wounds of her family’s past? Creed: The Next Round #2 expands the world, and family, of Creed and hints it might be even bigger than we know.

Written by Latoya Morgan and Jai Jamison, Creed: The Next Round #2 delivers what has made the film series solid. It’s strongest when it’s about more than boxing. The first focused on legacy and ghosts of the past while the second took on toxic masculinity.

Creed: The Next Round #2 delivers more hints and this series focus, familial trauma. Adonis must not only figure out how to be a father to a daughter but also there are hints at the division between him and his half-sister, a character we know little about up to this point. A boxer on her own, she too was a champion but her last name didn’t give her fame and fortune like Adonis. You can feel the clash as to who is the real heir to the name Creed.

And name seems to be key. While Adonis feels like he’s attempting to protect and shield his daughter, the first issue teased it’s his own brand he’s truly protecting. That expands in this issue as Adonis and Bianca’s investment plans are squashed by a mysterious competitor who is buying up the companies the two are looking to invest in. A tease towards the end of the comic hints there may be a third Creed in the mix.

Wilton Santos and Joe Jaro provide the art with ink by Santos and Maria Keane and color by DJ Chavis and Joana Lafuente. The comic does a fantastic job of balancing the boxing action and family drama with so much driven by a characters expression, body language, or action. The visuals continue to do an amazing job of adding in sign language, something I’ve never seen in a comic. While there isn’t flashy sports action, there is far more than enough tension and drama to make you want to get in on the action.

Creed: The Next Round #2 balances the concept of charting one’s own path while also balancing one’s family history. It shows who we are is complicated and it’s a fight for one’s individuality. Beyond the family drama, we also get some entertaining boxing moments, delivering action. Overall, it’s a solid continuation of the franchise that shows there’s a lot of ways for this world to expand.

Creed: The Next Round #1 is an interesting start expanding the Creed world

I’m a fan of both the Rocky and Creed franchises. Even in their cheesiest moments, they entertain and satisfy basic entertainment needs. So, I’ve been intrigued to see what Creed: The Next Round #1 would deliver for its opening round.

Creed: Next Round #1 begins with a predictable route but surprises by the end

Creed: Next Round #1

I’m a fan of both the Rocky and Creed franchises. Even in their cheesiest moments, they entertain and satisfy basic entertainment needs. At their hearts, they’re about overcoming odds delivering a ride full of ups and downs along the way. The first two Creed films delivered a solid continuation of the series, not just delivering those highs and lows but sticking to themes underneath, giving each film more to chew on. Creed III for me floundered as it lost that “meat” on its bones delivering surface level entertainment when the first two delivered so much more. So, I’ve been intrigued to see what Creed: Next Round #1 would deliver for its opening round.

Written by Latoya Morgan and Jai Jamison, Creed: Next Round #1 is in many ways safe… and that’s kind of the point. It’s ten years since the third film and Amara Creed is grown up entering the world of boxing herself. Adonis is retired with Bianca managing both of them in different ways. Adonis is at a point he’s playing it safe though. With his investments, with his daughter, there’s an edge that feels like it’s missing. Amara feels it too which sets her upon a path that’s predictable because it’s what we’ve seen before. And again, that’s the point. Like previous Creed films, this comic looks like it has a vision beyond the ebbs and flows and the actual boxing matches and the punches that come with it.

Like the first Creed film, Creed: Next Round #1 feels like it’s about generations. Like some of the latter Rocky films, it’s about what one generation can provide the next, the previous one’s struggles will hopefully make it easier for their children. In Rocky, that failed due to bad investments, a topic danced about and teased here, and here Adonis and Bianca still have their fortune and company but are looking to expand with hints at risk. Adonis sees the comfort and only negative in Amara’s path. If she takes on too tough of an opponent the brand, and she, will get hurt. There’s no need for Amara to do anything, the family is set. But her wanting to prove herself clashes with Adonis’ want of brand recognition. Amara could cause issues with that, whether Adonis consciously recognizes that. He may be protecting his daughter but he’s also protecting his business plans. He’s not one for risk anymore.

All of that leads to expected decisions by Amara but the ending is the most interesting aspect opening up a pandora’s box that was only hinted at in Creed.

The art by Wilton Santos is solid. With color by DJ Chavis and lettering by Andworld Design, the comic has a good look where the characters look like their real world counterparts. There’s some visual concepts of opponents’ records and information that is brought over from the films as well. What stands out is the use of BASL (Black American Sign Language) that is used throughout. It’s not something I know at all but having characters clearly signing at times with their hands in positions adds to the comic and experience.

Creed: Next Round #1 is an intriguing start to the series. The ride isn’t as interesting as where it winds up in the end and where it goes next should really start some emotional fireworks.

Creed enters the comic ring in June 2023

BOOM! Studio has announced an upcoming four-issue limited comic book series based on the Creed franchise.

Creed III’s director, producer and star Michael B. Jordan serves as the creative director on the new story. He joins superstar co-writers LaToya Morgan and Jai Jamison, highly acclaimed artist Wilton Santos, colorist DJ Chavis, and executive producer Elizabeth Raposo, associate producer Christina Raquel of Outlier Society and Chartoff-Winkler to bring the future legacy of the legendary boxer to life within the pages of a comic book for the very first time in June 2023. The announcement comes following the record-breaking theatrical release of MGM’s Creed III.

The Creed comic book series begins ten years after the events of Creed III. Adonis Creed is out of the ring but not out of the game as he trains – along with his manager-wife Bianca – the next champion—his daughter Amara, now an amateur boxer. But with Adonis and Bianca reluctant to pit their daughter against more dangerous opponents, Amara feels like her career is at a standstill, and she’s hungry for more. Amara will have to find another trainer. Someone who’s not afraid of defying Adonis but still knows how to teach her to fight like a Creed. Who’s up for the challenge of training a young boxer to become the next champion fighter?

The first issue features cover art by highly acclaimed artists Mateus Manhanini, Valentine de Landro, Paris Alleyne, and more.

Print copies of the first issue will be available for sale in June 2023 exclusively at comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest comic book shop) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Kindle.
