Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Blackout Bombshell #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Al Capone (Black Panel Press) – The history of the famous mobster is explored here! As fans of mob stories, we’re pumped to check this out.

The Blackout Bombshell #1 (Massive Publishing) – After a night of drinking turned into a blank slate, Jack must put together what exactly he’s gotten himself into before he ends up in a world of trouble. Sounds like the type of detective story we enjoy.

Captain America #1 (Marvel) – It’s a new volume for Cap and a new creative team and we’re always excited to see what a new crew brings to the classic character.

Dark X-Men #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a lot of fun, as much fun as Fall of X can be, and we’re excited and hoping the second issue brings the same.

Disney Villains: Hades #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The first issue was solid with a great look and great feel as it focuses on the overlooked and under appreciated Disney villain.

Green Lantern: War Journal #1 (DC Comics) – John Stewart gets his own series the the debut issue is a hell of a start.

Hexagon Bridge #1 (Image Comics) – Explorers Jacob and Elena Armlen find themselves trapped in a strange parallel dimension of elusive landscapes and shifting architecture inhabited by mischievous entities.

Investigators Vol. 7 All Tide Up (First Second) – This series is so much fun with over the top action and cool gadgets. It’s great for kids and adults alike!

Jungle Juice Vol. 1 (Yen Press/IZE Press) – It’s pretty much the X-Men but insect/human hybrids instead of mutants. And, it still works and is a hell of a lot of fun.

Predator vs. Wolverine #1 (Marvel) – Let’s be honest, this is a comic store debate in comic form.

Rare Flavours #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Discover the tantalizing tale of Rubin Baksh, a demonic Rakshasa with a down-to-earth dream of becoming the next Anthony Bourdain. The comic sounds pretty unique and with Ram V. writing and Filipe Andrade on art, we’re excited to check it out.

Rumpus Room #1 (AWA Studios) – Meet Bob Schrunk, technocrat billionaire, collector of bad art, and victim of a hideous skin condition that can only be treated with a highly illicit and definitely not FDA-approved face cream that must be…harvested. From human beings. It’s Mark Russell… that alone has us reading this.

So What’s Wrong Getting Reborn as a Goblin Vol. 3 (Yen Press) – The series has been a nice twist on the reincarnation story focused on how to build and organize a society.

Tomb Raider King Vol. 4 (Yen Press) – The volume wraps up one story line and kicks off a hell of a lot more. Fans of the series won’t want to miss this!

Traveling to Mars #8 (Ablaze) – Mark Russell and Roberto Meli’s series has been filled with emotion and heart… and some laughs and satire.

Wonder Woman #1 (DC Comics) – We’ve read the first issue and this is a game changer for status quo… it helps it’s really good too.

Hades — the lord of darkness! The most deceitful and scheming of the Greek gods!

The one god not invited to the weekly brunch at Mount Olympus!

Obviously, a slight like this calls for the total destruction of the gods of Olympus. To make that happen, the hot-tempered ruler of the underworld needs to acquire the magical Golden Fleece of Colchis. Unfortunately, the Fleece is guarded by a sleepless dragon and soldiers made out of teeth, so Hades assembles a ragtag group of morally questionable adventurers to help him steal the Fleece before some dude named Jason and his Argonaut bros swoop in and ruin his perfectly logical plan. It’s absolute chaotic hilarity courtesy of writer ELLIOTT KALAN (Spider-Man & The X-Men) and artist ALESSANDRO RANALDI (Zorro)!

Disney Villains: Hades #1 recruits a team for a mission

Disney Villains: Hades #1

Hades – the lord of darkness! But, to do that, Hades needs to put together a team for the mission… let me tell you about the “Hades Project,” I mean Disney Villains: Hades #1.

Written by Elliot Kalan, Disney Villains: Hades #1 is a fun start taking the Disney villain and putting him on a mission to get a weapon to take on his enemies. It’s all done with the entertaining flare of the Hercules animated film which comes across well on the printed page. The issue is your standard “gather the team” type story as Hades goes around recruiting members. We get quick introductions to each, enough to get an idea that this is going to be a challenge just with them getting along.

But, Kalan delivers a bigger challenge in Jason who along with his Argonaut dude bros also want the Fleece. Kalan delivers a comic packed with characters, each more over the top than the next and a few you just want to punch, which indicates some solid writing.

The art by Alessandro Ranaldi looks like it comes straight from the animated film. The character designs are fantastic and feel like they’d fit right in. Where I think it all really stands out is the way the characters deliver their dialogue. It’s all so expressive, much like the film, it makes the emotion of the delivery really come through.

Disney Villains: Hades #1 is a really fun comic. Though the concept is one we’ve seen before, the comic does it with such flare that it’s hard to not have fun reading. It’s another great addition to Dynamite’s “Disney Villains” line of comics.

Astrobots #4

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alpha Flight #1 (Marvel) – Protecting Canada from mutants? We’re fans of the classic Alpha Flight and we’re intrigued about this new series.

Astrobots #4 (Massive) – Fantastic so far, we finally have an idea of what is up and with tensions, and the violence, escalating, we want to see where this goes.

Barb Vol. 3 Battle for Bailiwick (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers) – Every volume has been fun so far and perfect for young readers who want a fun fantasy series.

The Cull #1 (Image Comics) – Five friends set off to shoot a short film on a forbidden rock near their home the summer before they all go their separate ways. But that’s not really why they’re there. One of them has lied. And that lie will change their lives forever. Sounds like a nice tease and we’re excited to find out more!

Dark X-Men #1 (Marvel) – Have you seen the lineup? That alone is reason to get this!

Disney Villains: Hades #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Dynamite has been knocking it out of the park with their “Disney Villains” line , so we’re excited to check out this new one.

Rooster Fighter Vol. 4 (VIZ Media) – Yes the concept is silly but it works so well. The tease of Keiji’s half-brother has us pumped for the latest volume.

Uncanny Avengers #1 (Marvel) – Fall of X has been intriguing so far so we want to see what a new “unity” team will be like considering the climate in the Marvel Universe.

Under the Influence #2 (Mad Cave Studios) – A series about a cult spun out from a social media influencer and memes? Yes please!

Void Rivals #3 (Image Comics/Skybound) – If you’re a Transformers fan, this series is a must!

Washington’s Gay General (Abrams Comicarts) – Learn about General Von Steuben!
