Cat Fight #1 is a fun and intriguing start

Cat Fight #1

Felix lives a life of high fashion and indulgence. Sure, he steals to get it, but he gets it on his own, nonetheless. When a mysterious character by the name of Schrodinger threatens Felix’s only surviving family member in an attempt to recruit him into a crime syndicate, Felix is sent on a globetrotting game of cat and mouse in a heightened world of colorful criminal masterminds. Cat Fight #1 kicks off a cool crime story that is already full of action.

Written by Andrew Wheeler, Cat Fight #1 packs a lot into the first issue. There’s action. There’s reveals. And it really gets the ball rolling. It feels a bit like Kill Bill with a Bond coolness about it.

Right away Wheeler sucks readers in with Felix and a heist that goes somewhat right but more importantly gets us to know Felix. We get a sense of how he sees the world, items to steal, and a slyness about him that where he’d shake your hand and remove your watch and rings while doing so. The comic feels a bit like the opening of a Bond film, big action sequence just before the credits roll, in this case that’d be at the end of the issue where we’d also get a cool theme song. Overall, it’s just fun.

Where I think the comic is a little short is the art. Illias Kyriazis delivers the cool along with ink by Auguste, color by Dennis Yatras, and lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. But, the style of the characters isn’t quite for me. There’s fantastic page layouts at times but overall, it’s a style that’s not my favorite. It’s all personal preference with this. There’s a lot I like but just some visuals that aren’t for me. It’s not a knock, just what I like for art. But, I do think the comic’s look works well for the story and the layout and flow of pages is excellent, all enhancing Wheeler’s style for this.

Cat Fight #1 is a nice start to the series. Folks who enjoy a good heist/revenge/action story, this is one to check out. It packs a lot into the first issue but does it in a way that keeps the readers engaged and adds to what’s going on. It’s a fun debut that’s well worth checking out.
