Who is the Vampire King!? We’re at the halfway point and DC vs. Vampires #6 delivers action, tragedy, and reveals as Batman and his team are hunted and we find out who is calling all of the shots. DC vs. Vampires might seem like a silly concept but each issue has delivered in every way making it one of the most fun, and one of my, most anticipated comics each month.
DC’s vampire nation has had enough and has made moves to finally become the top of the food chain. Someone has taken over and is calling the shots, slowly recruiting heroes and villains and turning them to the cause.
Written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg, DC vs. Vampires #6 continues the brilliance of the series that keeps you guessing as to who’s a vampire and who can be trusted. Each comic is infused with paranoia that leaves readers unsure as to where it’s all going to go.
As a standalone series, Tynion and Rosenberg are free to do whatever works which means heroes and villains being killed and we’re talking some pretty high profile names. No one feels like they’re safe in this series which just adds to the fun. The creators leave it so you truly have no idea what’s coming next.
And that’s especially true for DC vs. Vampires #6. Not only do we get the reveal as to who the Vampire King is but the issue also leaves us with an idea of the greater plan. With those last few pages and panels, we get an idea of the enormity of the story and what felt like a low level “street fight” that was seeing escalation quickly turns into something much grander.
The art continues to be solid. Otto Schmidt, Simone Di Meo, Daniele Di Nicuolo, and Rex Lokus work together to deliver a style that fits both it’s superhero roots as well as its horror genre. It balances things perfectly and captures every detail with flair and excitement. There’s also something about the art that nails down the tragedy and desperation of this issue. There’s some iconic moments that are memorable and it all stands out. Tom Napolitano‘s lettering stands out as well. There’s a lot of dialogue as heroes beg and plead with their turned friends in hope of getting through to them. There’s also a hell of an emphasis on a certain page when the Vampire King is revealed. The art and lettering are perfect.
DC vs. Vampires #6 is another fantastic issue for the series. It keeps you guessing and when events play out or things are revealed, it’ll leave your jaw hanging open. It has me excited to see where the latter half of the series goes as the issue is clearly the low point that our heroes will need to climb out of to save the day… if they can.

The Killer: Affairs of State #2 (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – The first issue gave us a new status-quo for The Killer. Now working for French Intelligence, the series seems like it’s focused on corrupt government officials and delivers the same complex stories we’ve come to enjoy.
My Date with Monsters #5 (AfterShock) – The series has been a great mix of horror, comedy, and rom com and we’re intrigued and excited to see how it all wraps up.
Ranger Stranger #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue was short comics that hand us laughing out loud and crying from laughing so hard. Here’s hoping the second delivers a similar amount of insanity.
Season of the Bruja #1 (Oni Press) – A story of magic that looks to have a solid amount of real world culture and history mixed in based on the writer’s own family’s traditions.

Aquamen #1 (DC Comics) – DC looks to have some big plans for the Aquaman corner of their universe and things really begin to pick up with this new series which brings a lot of different plotlines together it looks like.
Ben Reilly: Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) – Ben Reilly has been a character that has been hit and miss, so we were shocked at how blown away we were by this first issue. We’re hoping for more.
BRZRKR #7 (BOOM! Studios) – The series has been full of action but also a lot of heart as well.
Carnage Forever #1 (Marvel) – Marvel is celebrating 30 years of Carnage. What’s coming? We’ll maybe get some answers here.
Dark Ages #5 (Marvel) – This event has been fantastic so far. Our heroes begin their assault on Europe to stop Apocalypse and with deaths already everything is on the table as far as what’s next.
DC vs. Vampires #5 (DC Comics) – When last we left it, it was the Justice League vs. Batman and Green Arrow. Who’s a vampire in the Justice League? We’ll find out!
Ghost Rider #1 (Marvel) – The character has had a rough go for a while but this sounds like a clean slate of a start that hopefully will put Ghost Rider more front and center like he should be.
Glamorella’s Daughter #4 (Literati Press) – A fantastic spin on the superhero genre. There’s solid heart and solid laughs.
The Harbinger #5 (Valiant) – Valiant is getting their world back in order and this series, along with Shadowman, feels like it’s going to play a major role in what’s to come. With a movie now again in the works, this is one to keep an eye on.
The Killer: Affairs of the State #1 (BOOM! Studios) – We love this series about a European hitman. Think James Bond but without the imperialist bullshit.
Step By Bloody Step #1 (Image Comics) – A wordless comic by Simon Spurrier, Matheus Lopes, and Matias Bergara featuring an armored giant and helpless child. We’re intrigued to check this one out as it hits the nostalgia button and wordless comics can be very hit or miss.
Snow Angels Vol. 1 (Dark Horse) – If you missed this series as single issues when comiXology Originals released it, here’s your chance to discover this frozen sci-fi horror series.
Supermassive (Image Comics) – Image is getting a superhero world spinning out of Radiant Black and things really kick off here.
Task Force Z #5 (DC Comics) – The concept of an undead Suicide Squad might sound silly but it has worked so far and last issue left us with a lot of questions we want answers to!
We Ride Titans #2 (Vault Comics) – Giant piloted mechs protect against kaiju, we’ve seen that before. But, this series focuses on the dysfunctional family that manages and pilots one of those mechs.

Batman has confirmed who in the Justice League has been turned into a vampire…but can he make his move before the Justice League is turned against him? It’s hero versus hero in this blood-drenched chapter…with clues to who the new Vampire King might be!
DC has done an amazing job in its “Elseworlds” stories, taking familiar characters and putting them into new and different situations. DC vs. Vampires had me expecting a pretty straightforward story like DCeased but vampires instead of zombies. The series has surprised me with a slow build that has left me paranoid and guessing who has been turned and who will die next. With it being an “alternate” world, the creators can have fun taking it in directions that are unexpected. DC vs. Vampires #4 takes things in a familiar direction but at its core delivers another issue that’ll leave you guessing what’s next.
Written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg, the series has kept readers guessing as to who has been turned and who to trust. There’s an underlying paranoia about each issue. You never know when a character will be revealed as having been turned into a vampire and what might happen from there. Hero. Villain. No one is safe in this series. We know the Justice League has been compromised with Hal Jordon now a vampire and recruiting from the team as well as sowing distrust with Batman who is on the trail figuring out who is a vampire.
The comic follows a lot of tropes we see a in comics. The heroes fight do a misunderstanding and then team-up. We’re left with a battle as a cliffhanger. But, it all works and works really well. Rosenberg and Tynion play off of everything they’ve built up to this point to keep us on our toes. As the battle commences at the end of the issue, I’m still left guessing who might be a vampire and who’s not. Has Hal turned even more individuals?
But, the duo also make sure to deliver a story with some heart too. It opens with a bit of a tragic event and a friendship that’s dysfunctional but endearing too. Despite the action of the series and it’s rather B-movie type concept, the series has delivered punches like that playing off of the nostalgia we have for so many of these characters. We don’t want to see them turned and if they do, we hope they can be saved instead of destroyed.
The art by Otto Schmidt continues to be fantastic. Along with Tom Napolitano on lettering, the comic looks fantastic delivering action, tension, and just damn good looking characters. Schmidt’s style is unique and the comic has a flair and look about it that makes it all stand out. It also helps keep the story rooted in its superhero boots. Too dark of a style and it’s horror, too light and it just doesn’t work. Schmidt has a balance that’s great and Napolitano’s lettering perfectly hits the beat for each major moment.
The worst thing about this series is there’s so much more to go. I want to find out what happens now! If this was collected, I’d be glued to my couch reading it in one sitting to enjoy and find out what’s next. But, each issue is played perfectly leaving readers hanging and guessing as to what’s going to happen next.
