Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Briar #1 (BOOM! Studios) – What if Sleeping Beauty never got her happily ever after… and instead had to save herself? A concept we’ve seen before but we’re still very excited for this one.

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. the Army of the Dead #1 (DC Comics) – Bruce Campbell writing has us interested in this one.

DC vs. Vampires #9 (DC Comics) – The series has been fantastic keeping readers on their toes as you never know who will die and who will actually be a vampire.

The Disciple (CEX Publishing) – Estranged former students must band together, to recover the secrets their teacher shared – and uncover the ones he kept hidden.

Eight Billion Genies #5 (Image Comics) – The series has been amazing with a world changing concept but a narrow focus that keeps the crazy concept grounded. We want so much more of this world.

Fist of the North Star Vol. 6 (VIZ Media) – We love this new printing of this series, a classic manga that’s a must read.

Flawed #1 (Image Comics) – By day she’s a psychiatrist, by night she solves problems with a more direct approach. But, an immortal serial killer has her in their sights.

Hollow (BOOM! Studios) – A new take on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. A Free Comic Book Day teaser comic was solid and has us excited to read the whole thing.

Investigators Vol. 6 Heist and Seek (First Second) – The kids graphic novel series is always fun with its spy adventures for younger readers. Adults will enjoy it too.

Muhammad Najem: War Reporter (Little Brown Book for Young Readers) – A young Syrian chronicles the loss, hopes, and dreams of other Syrian kids.

The Nice House on the Lake #10 (DC Comics) – It’s been a while since the last issue but we’re excited as the series starts to wind down. We have no idea what’s coming in this sci-fi/horror series.

Old Dog #1 (Image Comics) – A CIA operative is given a second chance after a mission goes wrong.

Parker Girls #2 (Abstract Studios) – The first issue was a hell of a lot of fun and we’re expecting more of the same in this riff on Charlie’s Angels featuring Terry Moore’s beloved characters.

Roadie #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – A horror saga about nostalgia, heavy metal music, hell, and redemption from Tim Seeley and Fran Galán? Yeah, we’re in.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Armageddon Game #1 (IDW Publishing) – After some lead up comics, the next major TMNT event kicks off!

Thunderbolts #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a lot of fun and we want to find out a bit about the new character debuting in this issue.

Tim Drake: Robin #1 (DC Comics) – Tim Drake gets the spotlight!

Review: DC vs. Vampires #8

I say it with every review of this series but, it might sound silly but DC vs. Vampires is so good. The short version, the vampire nation has had enough. With a new leader, they have slowly turned Earth’s heroes and villains and attacked. Now, they’ve taken over the world and all that’s left is a small group of heroes and villains to stop them. DC vs. Vampires #8 is that moment where the heroes that are left say their good-byes in what is sure to be various missions that some will die. And death is part of what makes this series so good.

Written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg, DC vs. Vampires #8 is an issue of desperation and getting things rolling. It’s clear the odds are high. The resistance that remains is fractured in what to do next. There’s multiple missions and each is likely filled with doom and ending in death. But, even bigger, one character gets a beat down and an avenue is closed off.

DC vs. Vampires #8 focuses on Constantine, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Batgirl, and Supergirl. Each has a major role to play in what’s to come and each has very differing opinions in priority. Do they free the humans being used as a blood bank? Do they go after the Vampire King (Nightwing for those not paying attention)? Or do they get their heavy hitter back on the table? How about all of the above? But what’s interesting is Tynion and Rosenberg tease that the arrogance and “I’m right” show by the various groups may lead to their doom. One individual who has been doing his own thing suffers horribly as a major shoe drops. And that’s part of what’s fun with the series. You never know who may turn, who may die, what might happen. This is a series where anything and everything is on the table.

The art by Otto Schmidt and Daniele Di Nicuolo is fantastic as always. There’s a great style to it all and in this case there’s some moments that are brutal. But, through all of the despair and desperation there’s tender moments too. We get a touching moment between two individuals about expectations which another is a sexy night before both go off to war. Colors are handed by Schmidt and Pierluigi Casolino and lettering by Tom Napolitano. It’s fantastic as always and as fun as the story is, the art is right there with it. The visuals do a great job of keeping things dark, gritty, and desperate without being overwhelming.

DC vs. Vampires #8 is another fantastic issue. If you haven’t been reading the series, go out and start from the beginning. For those that have been reading, looks like it’s game on and things are about to get wild.

007 #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – A new volume and James Bond story, we’re of course excited for that.

The Closet #3 (Image Comics) – If you’re a fan of horror, this is one that’s well worth checking out. It wraps up here so make sure to pick up the first two issues if you missed out!

Dark Crisis #3 (DC Comics) – DC’s event has been interesting to start so far and with the clear Crisis on Infinite Earths tie-in, we want to see if things really start rolling now.

DC vs. Vampires #8 (DC Comics) – The series has been amazing so far. It has kept readers guessing who gets turned, who’s a vampire, and who’s not going to make it. Anything can happen!

The Dead Lucky #1 (Image Comics) – A new entry in the Massive-verse. It’s a new superhero that’s one to keep an eye on if you enjoy the genre.

Edge of Spider-Verse #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s about to do something big with the Spider-Verse and things get rolling here!

Golden Rage #1 (Image Comics) – In this world, older women are abandoned on an island. Watch as they make friends, bake dessert, and fight to the death.

Metal Society #4 (Image Comics) – The battle between humankind and robot is getting more and more tense as the societies begin to polarize.

Mind MGMT: Bootleg #2 (Dark Horse) – The series returned with the awesome mindtwisting visuals and story we expected. A welcome return and we hope to launch this property even further out there.

Sacrament #1 (AWA Studios) – Pitched as The Exorcist meets Alien. Yeah, we’re in for that.

Survival Street #1 (Dark Horse) – The country has been deregulated and carved up by corporations. A group of former public broadcasting edutainers have banded together as a type of A-Team to help children and fighting for them in the war zone of New Best America.

Sword of Azrael #1 (DC Comics) – Jean-Paul Valley does not want to be Azrael ever again. But he’ll need to don his mantle once more to stop deadly assassins.

X-Men Red #5 (Marvel) – After A.X.E.: Judgement Day‘s opening, don’t you want to see what happens!?

Review: DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #1

DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #1

DC vs. Vampires has been an epic maxi-series so far. The story has had a world where the superheroes and villains have slowly been turned by the vampire nation until it’s far too late. Now, the vampires have taken over with vampire metas ruling all. All that’s left is a small group of heroes and villains who are broken and desperate to stop what’s going on. The series has been generally contained with a few one-shots and now DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #1.

Written by Alex Paknadel and Matthew Rosenberg, the issue follows a desperate Deathstroke as he leads a team in an attempt to resurrect Batman. Of course things go wrong leading to some surprise twists, turns, and losses. And, that’s one of the things that has been great about the series. With it being a story unto itself, heroes and villains can die and be turned into vampires. It leaves you guessing as to who you can trust and who is a threat. It’s fun to read a comic and not be sure who’s turning up and whose side they’re on.

DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #1 does a great job of worldbuilding as well. We’re introduced to a new sanctuary for humans. The issue takes us through it all, how it works, what the leadership is like. We get a sense of what the world is like for them and the challenges they face. We also get to see a lot more heroes and villains who we might have wondered where they are. And finally, it creates further tension. The one thing that has hampered our heroes (and villains) is that they’ve been unsure as to what to do. That continues here with more fighting and a fractured front.

The art by Pasquale Qualano is very interesting. Done in black, white, grey, and red Nicola Righi handles the tones with Troy Peteri on lettering. I like the design of the characters, world, and the style fits well with the story and genre. But, at times I had some issues figuring out the details and what’s going on. Still, there’s something that’s really cool about the choice. There’s some great dynamic panels and pages in the issue that really show off the world.

Guillaume Singelin handles the story and art for a bonus story featuring Jim Gordon and what remains of the Gotham PD. It’s a great addition answering some questions. Like the above, you don’t know who you can trust. But, also like the above the art is a bit muddled at times to figure out what’s going on.

DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #1 is a solid addition to the overall story. It tackles what else is going on with events that wouldn’t fit in the main series, not just in length but with the narrative itself. It shows a side mission that’s pretty vital to the overall event and answers some questions as well as opening up some intriguing possibilities.
