Dynamite Announces The Art of Jose Gonzalez

Dynamite Entertainment has announced that acclaimed artist Jose “Pepe” Gonzalez will be the subject of a career retrospective in the upcoming September release of The Art of Jose Gonzalez, a 250-page hardcover collection of his illustrations from fantasy and horror comic books, commercial advertising, personal commissions, and more. Narrated by author, artist, and historian David Roach, the massive tome also features an introduction by fan-favorite painter Joe Jusko.

For nearly two decades, Jose Gonzalez was hailed as the premier Vampirella artist, drawing the fiery vixen for Warren Publishing in the Seventies and Eighties. Renowned for bringing to life the most beautiful women the art world has ever seen, Gonzalez’s career spans from drawing British romance comics to movie stars, book covers to commercial advertising. For the first time ever, author David Roach covers Gonzalez’s entire career, transcending his vast body of Vampirella work to explore the full breadth of the master’s creations.

The book features artwork from all periods of Jose Gonzalez’ life and career, from his prodigious childhood drawings to the private commissions of his later years with artwork sourced from some of the world’s leading collections. His work on Vampirella is celebrated by chapters covering his legendary Frontis drawings and the best of his private commissions, most taken from the original artwork. It will also include three of his finest Vampi strips: ‘Return Trip’ and ‘Spawn of the Star Beast’ (both printed from the original art), along with the legendary lost Vampirella strip, ‘The Wrathmore Curse’, never-before-printed in America. But before finding acclaim in the United States, Gonzalez had spent the previous decade as one of the leading romance artists in Britain and the book collects together the very finest pages from this little-known and hard-to-find period. Later on, the artist turned towards illustration, creating a series of astonishing movie star portraits, book covers and personal drawings for his native Spain and across Europe. These illustrations — much of them featuring his trademarked beautiful women — reveal him to be among the very finest illustrators of his generation, ranking him alongside such American greats as Robert McGinnis, Gil Elvgren, and Coby Whitmore… and will come as a revelation to even his most devoted fans. The final chapter is a lengthy gallery section featuring unpublished artwork; it includes many of the best commissions he drew for collectors and the cream of his astonishing fine art drawings taken from his three solo exhibitions.

The Art of Jose Gonzalez will ship in September 2015.

Vampirella is still trapped inside the nightmarish netherworld of the Feary Tales book, tormented by the disembodied voice of the mysterious Storyteller, and her only hope of escaping is if she can survive the ghoulish mix-ups of familiar nursery tales until she reaches the last story. But first she must weather Stephen R. Bissette (Swamp Thing) and Denis St. John’s (Monster Pie) macabre re-imagining of the classic Betty Boop version of “Snow White”, then help track down a little missing mermaid in Gail Simone’s (Red Sonja) “Thirsty, Thirsty Town”.

Vampirella’s only hope of escaping The Storyteller is to live out the twisted fantasies in his book. She soon finds herself cast as “Snow White” in a macabre re-imagining of the classic Betty Boop cartoon, as written by Stephen R. Bissette (Saga of the Swamp Thing) and Denis St. John (Monster Pie). Then, Gail Simone (Red Sonja) provides a fresh take on an old fishwife’s tale when she sends Vampirella to a thirsty Old West town to find out whether or not Sailor Jim and his mermaid bride really are living ‘happily ever after’.

Author Nancy A. Collins (Vampirella, Swamp Thing, Sunglasses After Dark) has called upon some of today’s finest creative talents – including Gail Simone, Steve Niles, Joe R. Lansdale, Devin Grayson, and Stephen R. Bissette – to celebrate Vampirella’s 45th Anniversary by crafting five issues of twisted tales, bizarre bedtime stories, and fearsome fables in the tradition of the original Warren magazines, each featuring everyone’s favorite sexy, kick-ass vampire-turned-monster hunter. And, boy, have they delivered! While exploring the Transylvanian castle she’s recently inherited, Vampirella discovers a strange old book of “Feary Tales” that seems oddly familiar. Upon opening it, she is sucked inside its pages and lands in a weird alternate reality, where she is compelled by a disembodied voice calling itself The Storyteller to live out each of the ‘feary tales’ if she ever hopes to return to reality. In the first issue, Vampirella is surprised to discover herself married to an infamous wife-killer in “Bluebeard’s Blood” by Devin Grayson (Nightwing, Batman: Gotham Knights, Titans), and then finds herself both the belle and the bête of the ball in “Cinderella? Vampirella!” by John Shirley (award-winning horror & science fiction author, and screenwriter for the 1994 cult classic film, The Crow).
