Mini Reviews For The Week Ending 11/5

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling short reviews from the staff of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full review for. These are Graphic Policy‘s Mini Reviews.

Alex

bm_cv10_dsBatman #10 (DC) I’m torn on this. There were some cool moments, and the art is great, but there wasn’t enough to make me beg for more. There was barely enough to make me care for the next issue. Overall: 7 Recommendation: Read

Cryptocracy #5 (Dark Horse) A fast paced issue in terms of the plot developments, but we seem to take a little break from the craziness – for a few pages at least. This has been a solidly enjoyable series thus far, but isn’t quite at the Must Read level yet. Overall: 7.5 Recommendation: Read

The Hangman #4 (Dark Circle) The problem with such huge delays between issues is that people forget about the series and don’t notice the finale when it comes out. I missed this last week… and I probably could have missed it this week, to be honest. Overall: 4 Recommendation: Pass

Moon Knight #8 (Marvel)** I’m genuinely torn on this comic. I want to like it, and I do to a certain extent, but I have no idea what the hell is going on. I actually think that I’m beginning to enjoy the series a whole lot more because either I’ve started to catch on, or Jeff Lemire is guiding the plot to a conclusion of sorts. I’ll be back for at least one more issue. Overall: 7 Recommendation: Read

Unworthy Thor #1 (Marvel) It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Marvel comic that I enjoyed as much as this that wasn’t Old Man Logan. Jason Aaron has a fantastic grasp on Marvel’s former hammer swinger, and seeing the god hit rock bottom before getting a glimmer of hope makes for a spectacular comic. Overall: 9 Recommendation: Buy

Joe

the_unworthy_thor__1The Unworthy Thor #1 (Marvel) – I have been waiting for this issue for awhile, and so far it delivered exactly what I wanted and more. The Mighty Thor is one of my favorite current Marvel books, and I love what Aaron has done with it. In this first issue we get a self-loathing but still mead-loving Odinson. He still has his metal Uru arm, and is still sulking about whatever was whispered to him that made him unworthy. We don’t get a ton of answers yet, but we get fighting, biting, Toothgnasher the goat, Beta Ray Bill, a Secret Wars reference, and a pretty huge set up that made me even more excited for this series. The art by Olivier Coipel and colors by Matthew Wilson are fantastic as well. They did a great job fitting the dark and gritty tone of the book. When people say Marvel has lost it, these are the kind of books I point to. Overall: 9.5 Recommendation: Buy

Nightwing #8 (DC) – This has continuously been one of my favorite DC Rebirth titles with every issue. I love the contrast between Nightwing, Raptor, and Batman. This series has been about Dick finding himself, and taking a look at Batman and Bruce as his mentor. With the shocking events of the last issue, Nightwing has to confront not just Raptor, but his past in the circus, his need to be there for Batman, and facing the memories of his mother. This was an excellent issue, and a great way to end this arc. I think Tim Seeley is doing a fantastic job on this run, and more people should be reading it. Overall: 9 Recommendation: Buy

Ryan C

The Flintstones #5 (DC)** – I don’t know how Mark Russell makes this disjointed script work, with have of it being a “present”-day allegory for the outright stupidity of the Trump campaign and the other half being a thinly-disguised Stone Age take on the Vietnam war told in flashbacks, but he pulls it off without a hitch, while Steve Pugh foolkiller_1_coverdelivers his usual solid art. I keep saying it to anyone who will listen — this is the best thing DC’s got going right now, and one of the very best comics being published today, period. Overall: 9.5. Recommendation: Buy

Foolkiller #1 (Marvel)** – Max Bemis and Dalibor Talajic bring back one of Steve Gerber’s trademark idiosyncratic creations, this title focusing on his second (of four, I believe) iterations, and re-introduce readers to the character and concept succinctly and successfully while planting the seeds of an ongoing mystery that promises to be pretty good if successive chapters are as well-executed as this first one. Top it off with a stylish Dave Johnson cover and you’ve got one of the better debuts of the latest “Marvel Now!” re-launch so far. Overall: 8. Recommendation: Buy

The Avengers #1 (Marvel)** – One of the big cornerstones of the umpteenth “Marvel Now!” is the umpteenth relaunch of their purportedly “premier” team book, but this iteration of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” is smaller, weaker, and more Spidey-centric than earlier versions, with Parker Industries stepping in as financier/landlord now that Tony Stark and his company are out of the picture. Don’t worry, though — all Mark Waid and Mike Del Mundo have planned is another long-form storyline centered around a fight with Kang. Dull, lifeless stuff right from the word “go,” there’s nothing here you can’t either live without or predict well in advance. Overall: 3. Recommendation: Pass

Shade, The Changing Girl #2 (DC/Young Animal)** – The second issue of Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone’s distinctly “oddball” series leaves dangling many of the more intriguing plot threads raised by the first in favor of an installment that more or less runs in place as our title character comes to grips with her new body and life, but I’m still digging how Ditko-esque the proceedings are in general, and don’t plan on jumping ship anytime soon. I just hope we get a bit more forward progression next time out. Overall: 7. Recommendation: Read

Shean

occupy_avengers__1Occupy Avengers #1 (Marvel): The world’s societal ills have had an impact and activism has recently been increasingly rampant and it would only make sense before some of those issues were examined in the proper scope of comics. Enter Clint Barton’s Hawkeye, Matt Fraction portrayed him as a fun loving , wisecrack who can tend to be self righteous and it definitely remains the standard bearer when it comes to this character . I can definitely say, David Walker has given us a different take that still entertains but as the great KRS-One said ” edutain”, as follow Hawkeye and Red Wolf as they investigate water contamination at a Native American reservation. What the creative team does here , in this first issue, is remarkable, to pack this much intriguing narrative in such few pages with such beautiful backdrops, which makes this , a definite buy. Overall: 10:4 Recommendation: Buy

Bitch Planet #9 (Image)– Kelly Sue Deconnick is at the top of her game since she left Marvel and this series more than proves she is not only a great writer but a great business mind . In this issue of Bitch Planet, the reader gets a front row seat into the mayhem of a prison riot as we find Kam reuniting with Mo and we get introduced to a new leader. We also find out who started the whole riot in the first place and the extenuating circumstances which lead to this . The essays and interviews in the back , is why I will always read the single issues of this series .Overall:9 Recommendation: Buy

Steven

Avengers #1 (Marvel) – Writer Mark Waid drops the ball with this first issue. Writing is vague and doesn’t set up things well. Art by Michael Del Mundo was disappointing, kinda reminded by of a courtroom sketch. I was not impressed by this issue at all.  Overall: 3 Recommendation: Pass

Patrick

Bitch Planet #9 (Image)* – “Order is not justice.” Prison architect Makoto Maki blows the doors open without the slightest idea of what he’s doing. Now not only is there a riot, but a riot in which the various prison populations mix explosively. President Eleanor Doane makes her return… but what kind of authority can she exert in this most toxic of environments? Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro and company are putting out one of the most interesting comics out there. Overall: 9 Recommendation: Buy

Well, there you have it, folks. The reviews we didn’t quite get a chance to write.

Please note that with some of the above comics, Graphic Policy was provided FREE copies for review. Where we purchased the comics, you’ll see an asterisk (*). If you don’t see that, you can infer the comic was a review copy. In cases where we were provided a review copy and we also purchased the comic you’ll see two asterisks (**).

Alex

mycroft_03_cover_a

Action Comics #966 (DC) Superman punches a dinosaur. That’s all you need to know. Overall: 9.25 Recommendation: Buy

Conan The Slayer #4 (Dark Horse) This is just so, so good. The art is fantastic, and Cullen Bunn has such a great grasp on the character that his writing could easily fit the pulp novels of Conan’s origin.Overall: 9 Recommendation: Buy

Detective Comics #943 (DC) As expected after the recent death of an ally, this issue doesn’t shy away from the emotional repercussions that would result from such a loss. I have to say that the new, more human, Batman is a welcome sight – and seeing his emotional struggle, and the pillar of strength that is Batwoman, is going to be an interesting ride. Plus, the new villains look awesome. Overall: 8.5 Recommendation: Buy

Mycroft #3 (Titan) If there was ever any doubt that both Holmes brothers are lovable dicks, then his comic should remove it. Mycroft Holmes is every bit as smart as his more famous brother, and yet just a tad bit less nicer. It makes for a fantastic read from cover to cover. Overall: 9 Recommendation: Buy

Ashley

TheSkeptics_Cover_1_200pxThe Skeptics #1 (Black Mask Studios) – In the case of full disclosure, I am very biased towards Skeptics writer Tini Howard as a friend, colleague, and a contributor to my recent project “Famous Last Words.” Noting that, that does not take away the fact that The Skeptics is off to a great start, with likable characters who are not the most honest of people, an intriguing plot based around the Cold War, and fantastic character design from Devaki Neogi. Not to mention Jen Hickman’s colors that somehow make the taupe landscape of super secret government research seem vibrant. Overall: 8  Recommendation: Read

Saga #39 (Image Comics) – For me, the past couple of arcs of Saga have not quite hit the same resonant notes of the first few arcs. Not to say that it hasn’t been good, but it did feel like it was meandering towards “The War For Phang” in some regard. However, since getting there, it feels like the series is back to its roots, with one makeshift family fighting just to make it. This issue in particular proved to be a very subtle kind of heartbreak as Hazel has to face consequences, mortality and the infinite as a deadly plan unfolds on the other side of the comet. Also, Petrichor might be the best new character in this series.
Overall: 7.5 Recommendation: Read

Elana

Doom Patrol (DC) is surreal and dream-like but vibrant and actually funny. The Vertigo Era cast and new characters are in the “getting the team together” phase of the story. The tone is exuberantly weird but with a good heart. It feels like classic Vertigo comics of my teen years but I have no idea what a reader looking at this with zero nostalgia would make of it.

I’m just thrilled to see Robotman & Larry Trainor again even though I barely know the original run. The mythology around the series is just that strong and the voices here are ds_cv5_open_order_varjust that and the voices here are just that charismatic. Nick Derington’s pencils are fresh and attractive with smart visual humor. Colorist Tamra Bonvillain’s work is beautiful and atmospheric. Overall: 8.5 Recommendation: Buy

Deathstroke 5 (DC): Slade Wilson, deadly mercinary mastermind, is also the worst dad in comics. Deathstroke is a terrible person and Priest never looses place with that unlike many other comics centered on supervillains. His daughter Rose aka Ravager, is still trying to be a horrible person.

It makes for an interesting dynamic when Wilson and his daughter are juxtaposed against Batman and his son in this issue. Batman is majorly overused but it was a blast having him here and a deserved choice. Damian Wayne and Slade verbally sparing is brutal fun. Joe Bennett’s pencils are polished and easy to follow. Nice to see Damian actually depicted as multiracial. Which he is.  Overall 8

Joe

Civil War #6 (Marvel) – I was one of the people defending Civil War 2 even after issue #3. I liked what Marvel was doing, and enjoy when they take chances. However at this point I just want to see how this event ends. The story seems to be dragging now, and adding an eighth issue puzzles me a lot, especially when I read this issue and felt not a lot happened. I also have an issue with this book costing five bucks. I may be a little more forgiving if it was three or four dollars, but when I am getting more story from books at that price these days, that’s a problem. If you are already reading this series, you may as well continue to see how it ends, but aside from the art, and a cool moment here or there, I cannot really recommend this book. Overall: 5.0 Recommendation: Pass

The Skeptics #1 (Black Mask Studios) – I like a lot of what Black Mask is doing these days, and that is being very different from the other publishers. This continues with this book. It sets up a premise that could prove very interesting, with a classic American vs Russia race to the super weapons, but only with super soldiers with psychic abilities. This series uses an original idea to that premise where there may be more sleight of hand and deception to what is actually happening. I would recommend at least a read, especially if you enjoy espionage, and Cold War antics. Overall: 7.0 Recommendation: Read

Skybourne #2 (Boom Studios) – The over the top action and fun continues in the second issue of this series. It is very much an adventure story about a family of immortals that are nearly indestructible. Here we get a peek at The Mountain Top Foundation and their bsusa_001_cover-b_braithwaitehistory, as well as what seems to be the main protagonist of the series, Thomas. There are teases of dragons, monsters, magic as this issue explains a bit more of what this series is. I enjoyed my time with it like I would a summer blockbuster film, and it is worth a read. Overall: 7.0 Recommendation: Read

Bloodshot U.S.A. #1 (Valiant) – You get a Bloodshot! And you get a Bloodshot! Everyone gets a Bloodshot! This was a very fun first issue, and I have always enjoyed how Valiant embraces their characters and aren’t afraid to go way over the top. This issue has corrupt business men, the other Bloodshots, Ninjak, Livewire, and even a hint that Donald Trump would be a figure head who could be elected when the evil suits raise the Bloodshot army. Overall: 7.5 Recommendation: Read

Patrick

Weird Detective #5 (Dark Horse)** – And so we come to the conclusion of this first story, which is a bit of a letdown – like, this could have been 4 issues and rolled a lot harder and weirder. Sana Fayez’ revelation didn’t feel big enough, the climax was underwhelming, and I felt like it was cheating for Greene to remove the madness from Sana’s mind. This series was nowhere near as fun or strange as it could have been. Overall: 6 Recommendation: skip

Betty Boop #1 (Dynamite)** – I love watching Roger Langridge work, and this should be bettyboop01-cov-c-lagaceperfect for him… but I wasn’t completely convinced. Mainly, I think, it was the musical numbers: these are never the easiest thing to pull off in comics, and I don’t think they work here. Artist Gisèle Lagacé does a fine job of capturing the style and the fun, but something feels just off for me… A little too paint-by-numbers, maybe. Overall: 6 Recommendation: skip

Black Hammer #4 (Dark Horse)** – Jeff Lemire & Dean Ormiston give us the origin of Abraham Slam, which is a bit on the dull side. These Golden Age characters need more moxie and vim & vigor for me. I’m also not sure about the motivations of all of the characters – the dinner party here, where Abraham invites his new belle Tammy over to meet the “family” has pretty forced drama. Though it was nice to see Colonel Weird step up to save the day. Overall: 6 Recommendation: skip

Descender #16 (Image)**: I really do think that Jeff Lemire is at his best with character studies, and this issue proves it for me. This is the story of Driller, an old driller robot. Funny and poignant, and of course Dustin Nguyen does a great job capturing the darkness of the mines while keeping the story clear. I’m quite enjoying this arc and will be kind of disappointed to return to the plot. Overall: 8.5 Recommendation: buy

I Hate Fairyland #10 (Image)** – Skottie Young takes us a hundred years into the future for the Last Battle of Fairyland between post-apocalyptic Gert and her allies, and Duncan ihatefairyland10_coverartathe Dragon. I want to give a special shout-out here to colorist Jean-Francois Beaulieu: his work on this issue is just stunning, making Duncan a real threat and the end of Fairyland actually terrifying. Another sour candy treat. Overall: 9 Recommendation: buy

Saga #39 (Image)** – This is the best issue in quite a while, bringing back the anything-can-happen sense that brought me on board in the first place. The spring is slowly being coiled and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. Overall: 8 Recommendation: buy

Stray Bullets #19 (Image/El Capitan)** – And yet more horrible people doing horrible things to other horrible people. Beth is in way over her head, but what I love about her character is that she always thinks she can handle it. But Annie is kind of out of her league in terms of sheer craziness. As usual, David Lapham’s work is excellent. Overall: 8.5 Recommendation

Ryan C

The Vision #12 (Marvel)** – A heartbreaking, if predictable, conclusion to Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s superb story that packs an emotional wallop and, in the final panel, signs off with a respectful and subtle hat-tip to, of all people, Alan Moore. Certainly the finest series Marvel has put out in years, this is a title that will be sorely missed — and discussed for many years to come. Overall: 9. Recommendation: Buy.

Titans #4 (DC)** – For years, fans clamored for the return of the “real” Wally West — but did they ever think he’d be brought back as a sniveling, pathetic coward? Dan Abnett is TheHangman#4varconstructing a travesty of a storyline here that is devoid of anything even remotely resembling intelligence, and Brett Booth’s art is both stylistically dated and, frankly, atrocious. As near to a worthless comic as you’re likely to read. Overall: 0. Recommendation: Pass.

The Hangman #4 (Archie/Dark Circle)** – A rushed and half-assed conclusion to another oft-delayed Dark Circle series, Frank Tieri and Felix Ruiz both clearly mailed this one in even though they curiously decided, probably under editorial duress, to leave things open for a sequel that’s obviously never going to happen. Really lame stuff. Overall: 1. Recommendation: Pass.

Postal #16 (Image/Top Cow)** – An explosive conclusion to the current storyline that wraps things up maybe a little bit too quickly and easily, but nevertheless delivers a real punch to the gut and sets events up to proceed in any number of highly intriguing directions. Bryan Hill and Isaac Goodhart are really hitting a confident creative stride on this series; ignore it at your peril. Overall: 8. Recommendation: Buy

Shean

Batman Beyond #1 (DC)– Sometime in the future, Bruce Wayne is dead and Terry McGuiness is Batman, which is a complete change from the original Batman Beyond origin doctor_strange__sorcerers_supreme__-1story. In this story, Terry is raising his kid brother, Matt , while they live in Wayne Manor. This future still has the gang of Jokers terrorizing Gotham, while Terry faces off against Bane-like version of the Joker. By issue’s end , Terry must go undercover in order to infiltrate their organization. Story:9 Art:9 Overall:9.3 Recommendation: Borrow

Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #1 (Marvel): We are introduced to Merlin, who was Sorcerer Supreme in his time fighting against an evil simply known as the Forgotten.Fast Forward a few centuries later, and we find Stephen Strange fighting a who different brand of evil, in Brooklyn. Before our hero could catch his breath, Merlin time travels to recruit him in the return of this same evil. Before issue’s end, we meet several different sorcerers supreme from different timelines, and meet an old friend while saying goodbye to an old one.
Story:9 Art:8 Overall:9.4 Recommendation: Buy

How high must the body count rise before Greg steps forward to face an opponent he can’t possibly beat?  Dive into the book UPROXX calls “Highly recommended” and THE MIAMI HERALD regards as “Noir fiction fans will surely dig,” as a new season of THE BLACK HOOD kicks off from the killer creative team of Swierczynski and Scott!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

death-of-x-2Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Shay

Top Pick: Harley Quinn #6 (DC Comics) – The punk scene and Harley are a match made in anarchist heaven! This issue will give you life!

Wynonna Earp Vol 1 TP (IDW Publishing) – This reboot/re-imagining of Wynonna Earp will bring TV fans and die-hard fans from the OG comics when she was still blonde and buxom together under one accord. Wynonna is one hell of a bad ass and her story deserves to be told. Get semi caught up with this trade paperback and enjoy yourself. It’s a great jump off point to get to know the new Wynonna, meet her for the first time or, discover some of the things that you wish you

Black Panther #7 (Marvel) – Black Panther gets more than by with a little help from his friends! This issue has everything you need and want, a lot of action, some serious double crossing, a nice spirit walk , funny and clever quips ,a dash of blaxploitation fire and , some killer cameos!

Spell on Wheels #1 (Dark Horse) – Girl powered road trip! But, the girls are witches on the trail of the thief that stole their powers.

Death of X #2 (Marvel) – It’s going DOWN! two more issues then we have IvX! This is the bridge to cover that gap and set the stage for one hell of a fight. Without giving away too much lets just say that the X-men, especially Cyclops should “Beware when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become one.” Because where the Inhumans are concerned he’s starting to sound an awful lot like the humans who came for the X-men and the other mutants.

Joe

Top Pick: Dept. H #7 (Dark Horse) – This has been such a good series so far by Matt and Sharlene Kindt. The underwater claustrophobia continues as Mia searches for who killed her father while trying to stay alive. The combination of the pencils and watercolor is just beautiful in this book and you should definitely check it out.

Black Hammer #4 (Dark Horse) – Such an original series. I always have liked what Lemire does, but this is so weird and silly and yet has such a great story. The characters are somehow relatable while still being so over the top. The way it pokes at superhero tropes is hilarious and refreshing. I also love the classic style art in this book, it really fits well.

Batman #9 (DC Comics) – Now that we are done with “Night of The Monster Men,” we can get back to a more focused story I hope. I love what Tom King was doing with this book, and am excited to see what this “I Am Suicide” arc is all about. King has made Batman very vulnerable so far, and I want to see how far he takes The Dark Knight, and how far DC is willing to let him.

Death of X #2 (Marvel) – I love Aaron Kuder’s art. It’s a breath of fresh air for Marvel. I also liked the first issue and want to see what Soule and Lemire do here since they are both writing this series. I’ve been intrigued by this title, and as a kid who grew up with The X-books being my favorites, I want to see what Marvel is really planning for them.

Infamous Iron Man #1 (Marvel) – Who doesn’t want to see Victor Von Doom as Iron Man? I’m so curious to see what Bendis will do here. I am sure everyone is. Is Victor truly redeemed post-Secret Wars? What will he think of Riri? Where the hell is Tony? There are tons of questions, and I am very hopeful for this series.

Alex

Top Pick: Faith #4 (Valiant) – Alex looking forward to a Valiant comic? Hardly a surprise, really, but this issue that has Faith, Archer and Faith (yes, really) attending a comic book convention is going to be an absolute blast to read.

Batman #9 (DC Comics) – At last the crossover story is done, so hopefully now we get to something that’s just flat out better.

Black Hammer #4 (Dark Horse) – A story about forgotten, or lost, heroes trapped for some reason in a town that most of them don’t want to be in. It’s a brilliant story, and one I was fortunate enough to read the first two issues in one go – absolutely worth your time.

Green Lanterns #9 (DC Comics) – After eight issues, I’ve found that I’ve become rather fond of the Green Lantern property post-Rebirth, and a large part of that new found fandom is because of this comic. It’s fairly similar in tone to Faith, and seeing as how that’s one of my favourite series right now, it stands to reason that this would also be pretty high on my list.

Ninjak #20 (Valiant) – I’m still not as excited about this comic as I want to be, but it’s still more enticing to me than almost anything that Marvel are publishing this week. I don’t know whether that says more about Valiant’s consistent high quality or Marvel’s lack of anything interesting.

Brett

Top Pick: Infamous Iron Man #1 (Marvel) – Doctor Doom as Iron Man is an intriguing concept and we get the details as to why and how here. If you don’t want Civil War II spoiled, you might want to avoid this comic, but, it gives us our first hint as to what the hell goes down at the end of that event. Beyond that, Doom as hero is actually really interesting and something I want to see.

Death of X #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a bit mixed for me, but I really want to see what happened between Mutants and Inhumans and the fate of a lot of characters. Marvel has teased things, and I want the details.

The Black Hood Season 2 #1 (Dark Circle) – Archie’s “superhero” series gets a second volume. The first was brutal, dark, and really great to read. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye #1 (DC’s Young Animal) – This new line of comics from DC has been really interesting and the latest release is an interesting one with a rather obscure character. I have no idea what to expect, but it’s one that’s high on my list to find out.

The Bunker #19 (Oni Press) – The time traveling mind trip comes to an end with this issue which feels like it has so much to wrap up. It’s been one hell of a ride, so how this all ends is something I really want to know and can’t wait to find out.

Anthony

Secret Path: Confronting the past is something that often requires dealing with controversial subject matter, looking outward to return inward in the present time, reflecting and hoping a light is shone on what is often ignored. Secret Path tells the story of a young boy named Chanie Wenjack whom died trying to find his way home, 400 miles away, after escaping from the often brutal conditions that many Aboriginal people faced in Residential Schools. Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip and long time activist for Aboriginal rights, and artist Jeff Lemire, present a story in which Canada must come face to face with their own past reality.

Black Hammer #4 (Dark Horse) – The team of Black Hammer continues to flesh out some very thought provoking, emotional, and deconstructive stories/images on the superhero genre as a whole. This issue looks to focus on Abraham Slam’s past, intermingling with the present time.

Black Panther #7 (Marvel) – Chris Sprouse has been doing a solid job penciling the last few issues after Brian Stelfreeze’s first four issues and looks to continue expanding the wide range of characters and places with Ta-Nehisi Coates’s scripts and Laura Martin’s wide-ranging colours. It looks like the creative team will be re-introducing ‘The Crew’ with the new set of members looking like Black Panther, Misty Knight, Storm and Luke Cage.

Black Widow #7 (Marvel) – Black Widow returns and looks to confront the very person that has been screwing around with her life: Weeping Lion. Chris Samnee, Mark Waid, and Matt Wilson have created a wonderfully balanced series, showing the power of visual storytelling alongside scripts that don’t really rely too heavily on exposition.

Faith #4 (Valiant) – Faith and Archer decide to spend some much needed time together by going to the local comic convention, away from the hustle and bustle of being a superhero. But, sometimes you just can’t escape that. The two have found themselves about to face off against a group of people trying to invade on the fun to be had at nerdvana.

Jason

Top Pick: Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye #1 (DC’s Young Animal) – Even a few titles in, Gerard Way’s ‘Young Animals’ is already proving to be a shot in the arm for DC’s comics line, with the My Chemical Romance frontman and his team embracing the weird and cherry picking the most obscure and weird characters from the company’s vaults. They don’t come any more obscure than Cave Carson, the one with the cybernetic eye, first appearing in four issues of the ‘Brave and the Bold’ in the 60’s before making his way onto the aptly named “Forgotten Heroes” along with Animal Man in the 80’s.

“Inspired by the visionary work of DC’s experimental past, but shaped and focused on the absurdity of today” is the imprints mission statement and it would seem that Way and Rivera are taking the spelunking hero down a psychedelic, self exploratory path as he struggles with his grip on reality after his wife’s death.

Infamous Iron Man #1 (Marvel) – Following in the footsteps of Doctor Octopus as Superior Spider-man, this month Iron Man becomes infamous as the leader of Latveria dons Stark’s armor. One of two characters taking over the Iron Man Mantle along with Riri Williams it remains to be seen if Bendis and Maleev’s Victor is truly on a path to redemption or working an angle to a new devious master plan.

While his last big plan saw Doom elevate himself to the status of God of the newly formed battleworld, can one of the biggest and most complex villains of the Marvel Universe really step up and become a true hero? With the series’ second issue featuring long time adversary and sure to be skeptical Ben Grimm, it’s sure going to be an interesting look into an already layered character.

Can the legendary punks get the Archies to realize their own rock ‘n’ roll potential and find their way home? Probably not—but it’ll be a blitzkrieg bop of a journey, as the two bands bounce from 53rd and 3rd to Rockaway Beach in this must-read crossover from the writers of the best-selling ARCHIE MEETS KISS and WE CAN NEVER GO HOME with jaw-droppingly beautiful art from Gisele Lagace (“Occupy Riverdale”)!

BETTY & VERONICA #3

All Heck breaks loose in Riverdale as the final act of BETTY VERSUS VERONICA reaches its combustible conclusion! Divided by Pops’ Chocklit Shoppe being bought out by Big Coffee, the forces of Team Betty and Team Veronica clash at the Halloween dance.  It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world as Betty and Veronica finally face off in a street fight that Sonny Chiba would envy.  Betty has the strength of 11 small girls but Ronnie has the reach of an NBA All-Star—who will win?  Who will lose?  Will there be sniffling? The streets of Riverdale run red under the rockets’ red glare (literally; this isn’t just hype to get you to order) and no one will ever be the same (slight use of hyperbole there)!
