Aaron Pierre is Lanterns’ John Stewart

Kyle Chandler will be slinging the ring as Hal Jordon in the television series Lanterns and it has been revealed that Aaron Pierre will be his partner in cosmic space policing as John Stewart.

Pierre was one of the actors rumored for the role and this would not be his first time playing a live action comic book character. Pierre was Dev-Em in Krypton, based on the Superman mythology. He was also a performer on the Old soundtrack, a film based on a graphic novel. In possibly his biggest role to date, Pierre will voice Mufasa in Mufasa: The Lion King.

Lanterns is going straight to series and comes from Chris MundyDamon Lindelöf, and Tom King. The trio are co-writing and executive producing the series, with Mundy serving as the showrunner.

The show is still casting for other roles and looking for directors, looking to begin shooting in January. In June it was announced the show was going straight to series for eight episodes.

The series focuses on Jordan who will mentor John Stewart. The two will investigate an Earth-bound murder with larger implications.

Kyle Chandler is trading “clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” for “in brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight” as he’s being tapped to slip on a ring and play Hal Jordan in the HBO DC Lanterns series.

Chandler is primarily known for playing Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights but has also starred in films like Super 8, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Zero Dark Thirty, The Wolf of Wall Street, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong. He’s also been part of shows such as Super Pumped, Star Wars: Visions, Blood Line, Grey’s Anatomy, and more.

Green Lantern heads to HBO from MAX for Eight Episodes

Lanterns, based on DC ComicsGreen Lanterns has been picked up as a series for HBO. The DC Studios‘ series is going straight-to-series order with Chris Mundy as the showrunner and exec producer. As already revealed, Damon Lindelöf and Tom King will serve as executive producers and will co-writer Lanterns with Mundy.

The series will follow new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Green Lanterns are space cops who get powers from rings infused with energy.

The character Hal Jordan was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 movie Green Lantern. Nathan Fillion will play the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman film which will come to theaters in July 2025.

Hal Jordan was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and debuted in Showcase #22 in 1959.

John Stewart debuted in Green Lantern #87 in 1971 and was created by Neal Adams and Dennis O’Neil.

Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof join DC Studios’ Green Lantern project

Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof are join Lanterns, the Green Lantern project from DC Studios. They join Tom King and the trio have put together the pilot script and bible for the series.

What’s intriguing about the announcement, which was made on social media, was James Gunn‘s use of images from Green Lantern: Earth One. Gunn has been very particular on the images chosen so this may give hints as to what to expect. Then again, it could just be good art.

Chris Mundy is a producer and writer who has worked on series such as True Detective, Ozark, Hell on Wheels, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, and more.

Damon Lindelof is a writer and producer who is known for Watchmen, Stark Trek Into Darkness, Prometheus, Lost, 2009’s Star Trek, and more. He has also written comics.

The 2020 Harvey Award Winners Have Been Announced

Ahead of the official ceremony later this week, the winners for the 2020 Harvey Awards have been announced. The award ceremony has gone virtual this year with the initial group of nominees announced in August and then the winners chosen by vote.

The 2020 winners are:

Book of the Year: Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang (First Second)
Digital Book of the Year: The Nib edited by Matt Bors (thenib.com)
Best Children or Young Adult Book: Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru (DC Comics)
Best Manga: Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama (Kodansha Comics)
Best International Book: Grass by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, translated by Janet Hong (Drawn and Quarterly)
Best Adaptation from a Comic Book/Graphic Novel: Watchmen by HBO, based on Watchmen (DC Comics)

The Harveys will also be inducting Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy), Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother), and the founding members of Milestone Media which includes Denys Cowan, Derek T. Dingle, Michael Davis, and the late Dwayne McDuffie into this year’s Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

The virtual ceremony will be broadcast on October 9 at 4:50 pm as part of New York Comic Con’s Metaverse. The ceremony will be hosted by Vivek Tiwary and will feature Gene Luen Yang, Neil Gaiman, Jill Thompson, and Damon Lindelof.

Marvel Entertainment has announced he launch of a brand-new digital series, Marvel Presents: The World’s Greatest Book Club with Paul Sheer, a six-episode weekly series celebrating your favorite comics and the community around them. This fun, light-hearted seriesis hosted by actor and comedian Paul Scheer, who will be joined by celebrity guests including Damon Lindelof, Gillian Jacobs, W. Kamau Bell, Phil Lord, Yassir Lester, and Jason Mantzoukas. The series is produced in partnership with Supper Club with Paul Scheer, Jason Sterman, Brian McGinn, and David Gelb as executive producers.

For fans, comic shops have and always will be the heart of the comic book community; a place for new and longtime fans to come together and share their passion, fandom, and appreciation for the artform while learning about something new. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, Scheer will look to capture some of that comic shop experience by diving into the personal origin stories with comics and beyond with each guest in the series. Universal’s The Hunt Comes to Digital 5/26 and on Blu-ray and DVD 6/9

Tick tock. HBO’s Watchmen Gets a First Official Teaser

Watchmen debuts this fall on HBO. Created by Damon Lindelof, Watchmen is a modern-day reimagining of writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins‘ groundbreaking graphic novel about masked vigilantes. Starring Academy Award-winner Regina King, Don Johnson, Jeremy Irons, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Louis Gossett Jr.

HBO’s Watchmen Get Its First Cast Members

The new Watchmen television series has cast some of its first actors. Damon Lindelof who is heading up the series has said it’ll explore other aspects of the world and isn’t an adaptation of the modern classic comic series. It will air on HBO.

Cast in unknown roles are Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard. King will have the lead role.

Lindelof has said that some of the characters for the series will be unknown. There’ll be new faces, new masks to uncover, and there’ll be an exploration of the world.

King and Johnson have yet to be attached to a comic property in their careers. Tim Blake Nelson played Dr. Allen in Fantastic Four and Samuel Sterns in The Incredible Hulk. Louis Gossett Jr. was the voice of Lucious Fox in The Batman and Jake Berkowitz in The Punisher. Adelaide Clemens appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Carnival Girl. Andrew Howard was Luther Banks in multiple episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
