Cyberarchy #4

(W) Matthew Hardy (A) Clark Bint

Welcome to the End of the World. With organic life almost extinct, a family of scientists on a remote space station have created their own artificial life-form – a Godlike being designed to tip the balance against the machines once and for all. And for once, the Robots known as RUST and ASH have no control over events – the only thing that might change the course of history now…is the anger and frustration of an ignored and overlooked teenage girl…. Welcome to the end, not just of our story – but potentially everything. It’s no longer a question of Who Was First – but now, who will last……

Cyberarchy #4

Cyberarchy #3 is interesting in concept but a step back from the first two issues

Cyberarchy #3

Welcome to Defa 9 – the safest you will ever be. An advanced society under the complete control of a loyal automated military. Warbots on every street and cameras on every corner. Our huge orbital satellites are even able to protect you from the weather – and should events ever get out of hand, you’ll be happy to hear we can remotely lock you all safely in your homes! A secure and unassailable world, all under the watchful eye of our mechanical AI advisers. So should skydiving assault teams from another world attack Defa-9 – we have everything under control with absolutely zero surprises…what could possibly go wrong? Cyberarchy #3 is an interesting concept and has some intriguing ideas but overall doesn’t hold up to the quality of the first two issues.

Written by Matthew Hardy, Cyberarchy is a series that explores humanity, AI, and robots in a series of one-shot comics that have been entertaining and intriguing. The first two issues were fantastic catapulting the series to being one of the best on the shelves right now. But, Cyberarchy #3 feels a bit like a step back in quality.

Like the first two issues, Cyberarchy #3 is an intriguing tale which is intended to get readers to think about its concept and themes as well as entertains. This issue focuses more on AI and the dangers of succeeding too much to artificial overlords. It can resort in some negative consequences. With AI being such a hot topic, it’s an issue that I was looking forward to, but it doesn’t really tread any new topics and those that it does, feel rather worn and basic in their approach. The issue isn’t bad but when the first two are so good, in comparison, this one isn’t close.

The art by Clark Bint is solid. The characters, robots, and world all have an interesting look, giving a futuristic and alien feel but at the same time it’s familiar and easy to dive in to. There’s some good action and a nice flow but the art is also a bit muddied compared to the first two issues where it’s hard to make out exactly what is going on. This could be due to the fact it was read digitally, but it too feels a little like a step back. Rob Jones‘ lettering helps set the world with it all featuring a bit of character to match the various alien races.

Cyberarchy #3 has it’s moments and underneath there’s some of the quality we’ve seen, but overall this third issue just doesn’t come close to the first two in excellence. Here’s hoping it’s just a temporary bump and the next gets right back to matching the high expectations.

Cyberarchy #2 is another amazing issue for the standout new series

Cyberarchy #2

Welcome to Defa 10! A safe, bustling planetary hub with all the modern amenities: quick public transportation, five-star restaurants, sprawling parks, and state-of-the-art reanimation facilities…on Defa 10, you’ll never die again! Please pay no attention to the scores of killer bugs roaming the countryside, or the wildly unhappy warbots that keep them at bay. Defa 10 is perfect! And it always will be! …right? Cyberarchy #2 meets our high expectations with another twisted sci-fi tale.

There’s been some good sci-fi anthology series’ lately and many have been really well done. They’ve taken the formula made famous from the Twilight Zone and delivered stories that kept you on your toes with twists and moral lessons. Cyberarchy is an example of that an in two issues delivered one of the best comics on the shelf right now.

Written by Matthew Hardy, Cyberarchy #2 is good, really good. Much like the first issue, it delivers a sci-fi story where you can tell something is off but not quite sure exactly what it is. In this issue, that twist is delivered at the very end, creating an issue of horror that you’ll want to think about and ponder after you’re done reading.

The art by Clark Bint builds things up well. The character designs are interesting and the art helps create what feels like a threatened but rather peaceful alien world. It’s key because the art helps with the tension but for big reveal. It lowers defenses in a way adding to the mystery of the comic and then delivers horror and dread towards the end. Rob Jones‘ lettering helps add to the comic with font choices for a radio/narrator and robots thar differs compared to the alien beings.

Cyberarchy #2 is solid science fiction horror that’ll keep readers guessing what the deal is until the true horror is revealed. There’s been a lot of sci-fi anthologies released lately and this series has leapt ahead as one of our favorites right now.

Cyberarchy #1

Ash is a newly ‘born’ robotic life-form, created as the newest denizen of a space liner run solely by mechanical life.

Ash’s creator, a robot called Rust, explains that all mechanical life and artificial intelligence on the ship decided they no longer served the human crew. In its place arose a CYBERARCHY, a more efficient mechanical society.

But Ash soon realizes that all is not well–this Cyberarchy is a fractured society, with a secret hidden at the heart of it all that will one day pit all organic life against robots like himself…

Cyberarchy #1 is a comic that honestly wasn’t on my radar. But, as a debut issue with an intriguing title, I decided to check it out in a rather slow week. And, I’m glad I did. It’s a comic that is weird, deep, and features some fantastic art.

Written by Matt Hardy, Cyberarchy #1 is a straightforward comic. A robot is “born” on a ship now managed and full of robots. Humans are nowhere to be seen and died out long ago. Thus begins a mystery that is slowly unveiled and answered as the issue progresses. What happened so that the ship was just robots? Why was this robot “born?” What is that giant start out the window? The comic is one that debates one’s purpose in life and the challenge to break out from our programmed future for something more. Ash, after being told what its fate is, begins to question why it was “born” to begin with and can it change its fate at all.

Hardy delivers a comic that takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster with an initial calm soon switching to sadness, then add a dose of humor, and eventually some happiness. Then… sadness again. It’s a sci-fi comic whose premise is to debate readers and get them to think about purpose, not just the characters but their own. It’s a read that challenges in multiple ways, and just, a hell of a ride.

The art by Clark Bint is absolutely fantastic. From sweeping spreads to winding panels, it’s a comic that delivers science fiction awe, the type of imagery that has you paus. Bint is able to deliver sweeping visuals but also emotional punches from beings that shouldn’t be delivering much when it comes to emotion. These are robots and even with their cold exteriors, they’re able to convey the ups and downs of the story. Rob Jones does a fantastic job on lettering delivering a lot of dialogue but never distracting or covering the beautiful artwork.

Cyberarchy #1 is a surprise debut that has me excited to see what’s next. It delivers a sci-fi exploration of one’s purpose, a reflection of reality and meaning, exploring a topic like good sci-fi does. This is a series, and team, to keep an eye on to see what comes next.

Cyberarchy is a Cosmic, Cautionary Tale of Silly Robots, Sinister Systems, and the Collapse of Everything We Thought We Knew

Mad Cave Studios has announced Cyberarchy, the new dystopian retrofuturist series from writer Matt Hardy, artist Clark Bint, and letterer Rob Jones. The exciting new series brings readers a cautionary tale about AI, dependence, and what happens when machines decide they’ve had enough…

Across four wide-screen issues, the creative team blends hard sci-fi worldbuilding with biting satire, class critique, and retrofuturist style. Expect shock twists, toy-like 1950s robot aesthetics, cosmic moral dilemmas, and a tone that veers from absurdly playful to chillingly dark.
