Brian Michael Bendis Stays Exclusive with Marvel

Marvel ComicsMarvel Entertainment has announced a renewed exclusive agreement with legendary comic writer Brian Michael Bendis!

The multiple Eisner award-winning writer has come to be one of the premier voices in the comic industry with iconic runs on many of Marvel’s most popular titles including Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil, Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men, and more. Bendis also boasts two of the longest comic runs in American comic book history with his eight year stretch as writer of Avengers and over 200 consecutive issues of Ultimate Spider-Man – which saw the introduction of hit character, Miles Morales, to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe.

Reflecting on his lengthy career at Marvel, Bendis said in a release:

There’s been some speculation that I will be leaving comics because of other cool things going on in my life but I wanted to let everyone know that isn’t the case. I get it, sometimes when people have something going on in other media they tend to drift away from comics. But that is the opposite of what my life’s goals are.

I want to bring people into comics so they can see the original wonderful magic we have to offer every single week,” Bendis continues. “My partnership with Marvel, since the first day they hired me, has been a continuous dream come true and I’m honored that I get to continue this partnership for many years to come.

The writer’s lengthy stint at the House of Ideas is set to continue with a new exclusive agreement and a wealth of new stories in 2015 including the cataclysmic closure of the Ultimate Universe with Secret Wars: Ultimate End and a soon-to-be announced Secret Wars series that will have all Marvel fans keeping their eyes on Battleworld!

In addition to Brian’s Marvel Universe work, he will continue with his critically-acclaimed creator-owned series under Marvel’s ICON imprint, POWERS. The first issue of POWERS, by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, returns to comic shops for a brand new jumping on point in POWERS #1 and, debuting March 10th, POWERS will now be a live-action drama available only on the Playstation Network.

Congrats to Marvel and Brian!

Black (Comic) History Month: Cyborg, a Comic You Should Read

cyborg-sketch.150_580_54d444e41ee6b0.84559157Is it history if it hasn’t happened yet? Today, DC Comics launched their post-Convergence plan which will see 24 brand-new series joining their current 25 series that’ll continue. DC in their announcement has said diversity, in characters, stories, and creators is a focus this go around, and that’s evident by their choices.

One of the characters getting their own series is Cyborg, who will star is Cyborg. The series will be written David Walker with art by Ivan Reis. Walker should be noted is an African-American creator.

Cyborg debuted in DC Comics Presents #26 in 1980. Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez the character was primarily known as a member of the Teen Titans and has been a staple in the various cartoon depictions of those characters. He was thrust into the spotlight with DC Comics’ relaunch with the New-52 where he became a founding member of the Justice League.

In a revised origin, Cyborg is Victor Stone a high school student and football player who is hurt in an explosion and is fused with an alien technology by his father to save him.

The character is coming to movies with actor Ray Fisher taking on the role. He’ll first be seen on screen in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will eventually get his own movie in 2020.

Deadpool Joins Secret Wars with Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars!

As Secret Wars devastates the Marvel Universe by forging a new Marvel reality on the enormous patch-work planet of Battleworld, Wade Wilson will head back to the original 1984 Secret Wars series for his Warzones! tie-in, Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars.

In 1984, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars was known for debuting Spider-Man’s black costume and featuring Doctor Doom stealing the Beyonder’s power, and the first-ever event series also included a variety of appearances by Deadpool that readers never saw. Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars by the Deadpool Killustrated team of Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli, will have the Merc with the Mouth revealed to be a part of the 1984 comic book event and drawn into scenes from the original series.

In an interview with Marvel.com, Bunn said:

Way back when, right after I had finished Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, we were looking for something out of the ordinary as a follow up. One of my first suggestions was to have Deadpool thrown back in time into the middle of the original Secret Wars limited series. At the time, we decided to go in a different direction, but the idea of having Wade playing a big, in-continuity role in the events of that series stuck with me.

When Deadpool introduces himself to the other heroes, most of them have no idea who he is. At least, most of them are unwilling to admit that they know him! As the battle between good and evil commences, Deadpool gets plenty of opportunities to annoy the hell out of every major hero and villain in the Marvel Universe before the festivities are done!

This May, Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars rudely places itself into Marvel continuity and into comic book retailers everywhere.
