Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

007 #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Fans of James Bond won’t want to miss this series which has introduced an intriguing new villain and a lot of questions as to who Bond can trust.

The Approach #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The initial issue about a missing plane suddenly returning in a snow storm had us scratching our heads and wondering what would happen next. Fans of The Thing will dig this.

Avengers Assemble Alpha #1 (Marvel) – There’s a big event crossing over the various Avengers comics and it’s officially kicking off here.

Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #1 (DC Comics) – With a film coming soon, it’s not a surprise Blue Beetle is starting to get the spotlight. We love the fact that this is available in English and Spanish.

Justice Society of America #1 (DC Comics) – DC has had a bumpy ride of introducing its classic characters over the years but this new series should be interesting to see how it fits into the bigger picture.

Bob Phantom (Archie Comics) – We’re always interested in seeing how Archie handles classic superheroes.

My Bad Vol. 2 #1 (AHOY Comics) – Someone is killing capes-or would be, if they were better at it. Just that concept alone has us laughing and looking forward to this debut.

Plush #1 (Image Comics) – Serial-killing, cannibalistic furries! Sold!

Saga of a Doomed Universe #1 (CEX Publishing) – It’s 1984’s most shocking comic book, revealed at last! The retro style and concept got our attention.

Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special (DC Comics) – Head back to the 90s with classic and new material celebrating Wildstorm!

Joseph Schmalke and CEX Publishing are launching a new series: Seven Years in Darkness. Seven Years of Darkness tells the story of the first group of students to enter a wizarding school in over a hundred years. 72 children are selected for the new class, but only seven will graduate, alive.

Joseph Schmalke is the Co-Publisher of Black Caravan and a comics creator, writer, and illustrator residing in Westbrook, Maine. Joe is the artist and writer on several comic book titles including: The Infernal Pact, Cherry Blackbird, Phantom Starkiller (with Peter Goral), We Don’t Kill Spiders, The Electric Black (with Rich Woodall), and Murder Hobo (with Jason Lynch).

Seven Years in Darkness: Year One is a four-issue miniseries released bi-monthly. Seven Years in Darkness #1 will feature three covers from Joseph Schmalke and Bill Sienkiewicz and will be included as part of Diamond and Lunar Distribution’s December catalogs and will be available in stores this March.

NYCC 2022: CEX Publishing announces Sereno by Luciano Vecchio

CEX Publishing has announced the introduction of the next great superhero: SERENO! Written and drawn by Argentinean artist Luciano Vecchio, the superstar talent known for his work on Ironheart, Champions, Wiccan & Hulkling, Edge of the Spider-Verse, and Iceman for Marvel Comics and DC Pride, Teen Justice, and Super Sons for DC Comics. Sereno #1 marks the first time the series has been translated into English for an American audience

Sereno #1 introduces readers to the city of New Teia, where magic and science intertwine by night, and its guardian SERENO! SERENO, the Mystic Master of Light, must defend New Teia from an evil conspiracy set on transforming the city. SERENO must battle an avatar of Paranoia, a shepherd of Nightmares, and a Cult of Hate all while resisting his attraction to the super cat burglar Rufián. 

Sereno is a three-issue limited series with a double-sized first issue. Attendees of New York Comic Con will have the opportunity to get an advanced look at Sereno as Vecchio will be appearing at the show, where he will have copies of a special Ashcan version of issue 1 printed specifically for the show.

The Sereno #1 Ashcan is available exclusively at Luciano Vecchio’s table at NYCC (Table C4 in Artist Alley). Copies of this limited edition are priced at $10. New York Comic Con takes place October 6-9, 2022.

Briar #1 (BOOM! Studios) – What if Sleeping Beauty never got her happily ever after… and instead had to save herself? A concept we’ve seen before but we’re still very excited for this one.

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. the Army of the Dead #1 (DC Comics) – Bruce Campbell writing has us interested in this one.

DC vs. Vampires #9 (DC Comics) – The series has been fantastic keeping readers on their toes as you never know who will die and who will actually be a vampire.

The Disciple (CEX Publishing) – Estranged former students must band together, to recover the secrets their teacher shared – and uncover the ones he kept hidden.

Eight Billion Genies #5 (Image Comics) – The series has been amazing with a world changing concept but a narrow focus that keeps the crazy concept grounded. We want so much more of this world.

Fist of the North Star Vol. 6 (VIZ Media) – We love this new printing of this series, a classic manga that’s a must read.

Flawed #1 (Image Comics) – By day she’s a psychiatrist, by night she solves problems with a more direct approach. But, an immortal serial killer has her in their sights.

Hollow (BOOM! Studios) – A new take on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. A Free Comic Book Day teaser comic was solid and has us excited to read the whole thing.

Investigators Vol. 6 Heist and Seek (First Second) – The kids graphic novel series is always fun with its spy adventures for younger readers. Adults will enjoy it too.

Muhammad Najem: War Reporter (Little Brown Book for Young Readers) – A young Syrian chronicles the loss, hopes, and dreams of other Syrian kids.

The Nice House on the Lake #10 (DC Comics) – It’s been a while since the last issue but we’re excited as the series starts to wind down. We have no idea what’s coming in this sci-fi/horror series.

Old Dog #1 (Image Comics) – A CIA operative is given a second chance after a mission goes wrong.

Parker Girls #2 (Abstract Studios) – The first issue was a hell of a lot of fun and we’re expecting more of the same in this riff on Charlie’s Angels featuring Terry Moore’s beloved characters.

Roadie #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – A horror saga about nostalgia, heavy metal music, hell, and redemption from Tim Seeley and Fran Galán? Yeah, we’re in.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Armageddon Game #1 (IDW Publishing) – After some lead up comics, the next major TMNT event kicks off!

Thunderbolts #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a lot of fun and we want to find out a bit about the new character debuting in this issue.

Tim Drake: Robin #1 (DC Comics) – Tim Drake gets the spotlight!
