Duke Nukem’s Voice Says No to Republican Campaigns

Duke-Nukem-3DA top Republican Presidential campaign wanted Jon St. John to do some voice over work for them. Why do we care and why are we reporting it?

You might know St. John as the voice of the popular video game character Duke Nukem, one that’s known for his humorous quips.

Writing on Facebook, St. John said:

I don’t like to turn down jobs…especially when it’s a national ad campaign that pays pretty well. But I have a conscience and could not accept a gig to be the advertising voice of the Republican party’s leading candidate for president. Thanks for the kind offer, but I will sleep just fine at night knowing I made a choice I can live with. Meanwhile I’m happy to be recording a new video game today

Asked by The Verge to clarify which candidate it was, St. John said

I should have written ‘a leading GOP candidate for president’. It might have been Trump or Cruz. Either way, I would not have done it.

Trump? Cruz? Rubio’s team did list comics as an interest. Who do you have as the candidate?

Brazil’s Politicians Channel Superheroes

While here in the United States politicians tend to hide their goofy side, in Brazil, it’s a whole other situation. There, politicians have no problem channeling their inner superhero to court voters. Via the New York Times, there an auditor flies through the air like Superman, shooting laser beams from his eyes while using font last seen in He-Man. The candidate for a Catalão City Council seat dressed as Spider-Man and vanquished scoundrels in striped prison uniforms with well-aimed body blows.

This is all a move to cut through and grab voters’ attention. With over 20 political parties, you need to do whatever you can I guess.

If only our elections were this entertaining.

Steve Murray is running for Mayor of Toronto.  You might know Murray as Chip Zdarsky. Working in politics, I have to say his campaign website isn’t too bad and you can also follow him on Twitter.  Best of all his campaign has the fantastic short name on M4M (Murray 4 Mayor) which makes him a popular fellow on Craigslist.

Listen, you’re either with the cops or you’re Doctor Doom. It’s pretty simple in Steve Murray’s Toronto. Go Argos.

We can get behind Murray 4 Mayor.

Maryland Democrat Attacks Comic Books

State Senator Nancy KingWell, it’s campaign season and the pandering is in full force.  But in a flashback to the 1950’s, Maryland State Senator Nancy King, who’s running for reelection, is using comic books as she fear mongers about cuts to education (and let me be clear we’re not for that).

In a piece of campaign literature the slogan reads “Imagine if they had to lay off teachers…” with a photo of children reading comic books.  Implying comics don’t provide any educational value whatsoever.  I’m pretty sure there are quite a few individuals that would disagree with her.

We’ve covered how comic books can boost literacy, being used to teach science, they’re flourishing in education use in Korea and can be used to motivate students.  Interestingly enough Maryland has ranked number one two years in a row when it comes to a quality education.

One of my early jobs was as a Special Assistant for Senator John Kerry.  This was during his run for President around 2004.  Tons of random items were sent including some comic book related items.

Around May of 2004 a box made it’s way through security filled with all kinds of Spider-Man goodies.  Sent by Embassy Suites Hotels a letter was included:

Dear Senator Kerry,

For being this nation’s top Democrat, you’re a superhero in our minds!

Because you provided the inspiration for the latest in save-the-day accessories, we’ve enclosed an Embassy Suites Spider-Man 2 Web Pack just for you!  Kids across America will be getting the Web Packs free this summer when they stay at Embassy Suites Hotels.

So pass on the Spider-Man 2 Web Pack and make a superhero out of someone who makes your life just a bit easier, or keep the Web Pack for yourself.  It may just be this summer’s hottest accessory!

Me being the comic geek, of course I begged for the pack.  Below are photos of the items included.

Friday Fun: Magical Mike (Dukakis)

Today is the first entry in our “Friday Fun” series of historic political comic books.  Today’s entry comes from the 1988 Presidential race.  The comic book is called Magical Mike and was created by Dick Hafer, and was endorsed by Jerry Falwell and Republican Party.

The comic book tells “the ‘real story’ of Michael Dukakis, the 1988 Democratic nominee for president.  Includes jabs at blacks, gays, women (including Dukakis’ wife) – also attacks the sick, the poor, foreigners, peacemakers, and others, connecting Dukakis as the common link.”

Jerry Falwell encouraged his entire congregation to distribute the comic books and the Republican party made sure to include a copy on every delegate’s seat during the 1988 Republican convention.

Here’s some of the highlights:

Mayor Hundred the Original Obama?

In the latest issue of Ex Machina, a flashback is shown as the Great Machine decides to give up crimefighting for politics.

Effective immediately, I am retiring from volunteer community crimefighting.  And running as your independent candidate for Mayor of the great city of New York.  I’m hoping to be part of a truly grassroots campaign, one that will finally utilize the internet’s true potential to reach all voters.  Starting today, contributions as small as one dollar can be made directly to my new website at http://www.hundred4mayor.net.  That’s the word hundred and the number four, so please don’t–

The interesting part of the above quote is the focus on small contributions and the internet as a grassroots tool for campaigning.  Both show an understanding of the tool and the history of it’s evolution of use by the writer of the series.  What caught my attention was the use of a real world website (not sure if there’s an alternative like 555 for phone numbers on television).

With great dialogue showing an understanding of the internet by the writer of the comic book, it seems DC’s marketing team doesn’t quite have the same level of understanding.  DC and it’s parent company Warner Bros. dropped the ball on this one.  Having shown a brilliance for alternate reality games (arg) for the film the Dark Knight, including a fake campaign site for character Harvey Dent, one would think there was a possibility that they’d do a similar campaign for this comic book’s fake campaign (hell you could use the Dent site and change some text and graphics).

To my surprise, on a whim, I decided to see if the above web address and it’s .com equivalent were available.  To my shock, they were, and without missing a beat I purchased both (both are redirected to this site).  We’ll see and keep you updated as to the traffic lost through this slip up.

No malice is meant, just an interesting missed opportunity by DC I think (especially in this political season).

SPOILER – With the books hint at a Presidential run by Mayor Hundred I wonder if DC and Warner Bros. will take the opporunity for a real cool website tie in.
