Testament is an interesting sc-fi graphic novel about faith and discovery

Meet Testament: the premier caretaker android for the future. Not only were they designed to care for the wellbeing of dozens of interstellar passengers; explorers, scientists, poets, and artists – they have also downloaded millennia of religious texts and liturgies to best serve the members of a religious commune that make up the bulk of their human charges. These members of the Order of the Abundant Grace of the Cosmic Christ, having already chosen a monastic and scholarly life, are ideal for their mission: a one-way voyage to discover all they can about a miraculous far-flung planet capable of life and, by choice, not repopulate.

Soon, only Sister Judith remains on the distant planet, facing decades of life alone with her caretaker and no other human company. Struggling with faith and despair, she seeks purpose, or perhaps something else, in a sudden research trip into hazardous territory. Testament tries to carry out their directives, while staring down their own immortality, and questioning their place in a spiritual infinity equipped with the knowledge and traditions of people who could never have imagined a being like them.

Bulgilhan Press’ Slices of Life Wins the Massachusetts Book Award for Notable Contribution to Publishing

The Massachusetts Book Awards are annual awards given by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. The ‘Notable Contribution to Publishing‘ award considers the quality of the book as object—including production standards, design, and printing and goes to a Massachusetts publisher creating works of a high caliber. 

The second annual Notable Contribution to Publishing Prize went to Somerville-based Bulgilhan Press’ Slices of Life: A Comic Montage, by Qu. This graphic novel is a masterful collection of silent comics reveling in the quiet beauty of the small moments in life.

It’s been a real surprise and honor to see that Qu’s Slices of Life: A Comic Montage has not only received amazing widespread recognition, but also gained a much broader readership than we could have imagined. As an independent publisher, each release only occurs due to the monumental effort of very few people; the artists I have the privilege of publishing and I are forever intertwined by our shared love of comics and our labor. We’re over the moon for Qu’s work to be recognized with the second Notable Contribution to Publishing prize from the Massachusetts Book Awards, proving that one should approach their life with an open and curious mind.

Slices of Life: A Comic Montage, by Qu

Bulgilhan Press brings Stray and Die Horny to Small Press Expo 2022

Bulgilhan Press recently have published two new comics that fans will be able to get at this year’s Small Press Expo (SPX)! Stray by Eisner Award nominee Molly Mendoza and Die Horny by Eisner Award winner Rebecca Mock will both be available at SPX which takes place on September 17th and 18th, 2022.

Stray follows Jack, a chaotic romantic spiraling into disaster desperately seeking comfort in others while ignoring their own destructive tendencies. While thoroughly hung up on the past, Jack meets Stray and their whole world changes. Tender and sensual, lush and palpable, Stray ushers in a new era of cartoonist Molly Mendoza’s wholehearted approach to making comics and telling stories.

Stray debuted at this year’s Toronto Comic Arts Festival to an excited audience eager to see Mendoza push the boundaries of their distinct wholehearted cartooning to dig into messier themes around heartbreak, grief, vices, lust, and self-actualization.

Lovebirds Iggy (human) and Wortizabella (monster) have just set off on their romantic honeymoon tour of the wasteland. Before they can get too hot and heavy, they’re drawn into a conflict between humans and monsters! But these lovebirds aren’t exactly the conventional allies either side might have hoped for…

Described as a wholesome comic for sickos, Die Horny is a love letter to Power Rangers, pervy 90’s anime, and a desire to create something entirely catered to Mock’s taste, to terrifying and liberating results. Die Horny is set to debut at this year’s Small Press Expo.
