“Lost Tales” of Captain Ultimate Now Available for Free

Starting today at captainultimate.wordpress.com, a long-lost pulp adventure, Appetite for Destruction,  starring Monkeybrain ComicsCaptain Ultimate, is available as a free PDF download for readers to enjoy while they await the release of Captain Ultimate #2 in September.

When the world’s greatest hero, Captain Ultimate, disappeared, a writer named Richard Richardson kept his myth alive through pulp fiction, comic books, radio serials, and more. While much of that material was thought to have been lost to time, current Captain Ultimate shepherds Benjamin Bailey, Joey Esposito, and Boy “Boykoesh” Akkerman have unearthed a treasure trove of long-lost material from the notoriously reclusive writer.

Found in a battered old copy of Astounding Science-Fantasy #16 with a cover by Taylor Stauft, Appetite for Destruction is one of the most revered prose tales starring Captain Ultimate and his arch-nemesis, Doctor Destruction.

Esposito commented on the “find”:

We were ecstatic to find all of this stuff. There are some real treasures in here. Richardson was an absolute genius. A weirdo, but a genius.

Bailey added:

We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us cleaning this stuff up and getting it ready for digital consumption, but the effort will be worth it.

You can download the free PDF here and get the first issue of the ongoing Captain Ultimate on comiXology.

SDCC 2013: Monkeybrain and Joey Esposito’s Captain Ultimate Debuts!

Today at San Diego Comic-Con, publisher Monkeybrain will be announcing new series including Captain Ultimate! This all-ages all-ages superhero story, co-written by Joey Esposito and Benjamin Bailey, with art by Dutch artist Boykoesh.

Talking briefly about the comic, Esposito explained:

We’re trying to capture that heroic feeling superheroes used to have before everything went all grim-n-gritty. It’s an ongoing book full of lots of characters. We’re super proud of it, and excited to be at Monkeybrain.

For those attending SDCC you can catch the Monkeybrain panel, along with all of their announcements, as well as Joey tonight at 8PM PST.

We have a first look at the series and expect a review soon! But you can buy it now!
